Jen's Note: I want to thank Tenille for giving me this transcript! I especially enjoyed her little comments she made in her transcript of the television show that I kept them in here. She's got a terrific sense of humor! Thanks again, Tenille!
Also there is a Real Audio Sound clip of part of this television show and here are a couple of pictures from this TV interview. She looks kinda like a female Dick Tracy doesn't she? :o)

Idiot Presenter Darryl Sommers to be known as IPDS and the Goddess Gates (GG) chat
on the Show "Hey Hey it's Saturday", screened Friday October 2nd (because of the
federal election coverage on Saturday btw) on Channel umm 9 I think
IPDS: Please welcome Gates McFadden!
GG: Oh I know, but I've had so many *wonderful* wigs that actually, one doesn't know which
is my hair.
IPDS: Well, when we were showing that, we just showed a little clip just to remind people
of your work in star trek, (GG: yes, right..) and under that wig , that's where you had a
lot of hair (GG: That's right) . You said you wore wigs but your hair actually came down
to your waist?
GG: Came down to about here (turns around and shows middle back with her hand) I
just cut
it again, it grows pretty fast.
IPDS: Makes stupid noises like "gee" ooh"
GG: Doesn't yours?
IPDS: No I've tried to grow it down this far, but it's not a good look for me on telly I'm
afraid.(personal note - I think his hair must grow inwards into his brain to explain his
personality ;) Um now this is your third time out to Australia is it?
GG: Right, right.
IPDS: First time in Melbourne?
GG: Right, and I'm supposed to do an act for Red Faces? Is that what...(note- RF is
a comp for amateur acts, usually bad with the few very good ones thrown in)
IPDS: Uh yes if you don't mind we'd like a little tap from you.
IPDS: But you can tap?
GG: That's true, that's true.
IPDS: This is the thing, because I find a lot of the actors on Star Trek have wonderful
backgrounds in theatre, yours is a theatrical background..
GG: That's right, yes
IPDS: But it's also writing and directing, you also do sculpting and you do all sorts of
things.
GG: I spin plates, I do things like that.
IPDS You do all of that?
GG: Yeah
IPDS: Well I was going to ask you if you'd tell us one thing that I'm dying to know, what
is, cause you're out here for this, 'Holodiction' convention.
GG: Right!
IPDS: What is a holodiction?
GG: Well umm, holodiction, well its a convention, I don't know exactly what it is here in
Australia, but the holodeck is where you create all sorts of environments on the ship, you
see, so I think there's a little bit of holodiction. Umm we're doing a, I'm doing some
appearances in Adelaide, and in Melbourne and Sydney. And I'm also trying to raise money
for "Doctors without Borders/Boarders?!?" (anyone care to explain this cause to
me btw?)which is one of my causes. (Repeats it in French)..if your are French.
IPDS: Ooh oui!
IPDS: Just explain what it is again?
GG: It's going to be a gathering of people who are Star Trek fans, and I do a Q & A,
and sign autographs, things like that.
IPDS: Right
GG: Do tap-dancing and a number of things.
IPDS: What sort of questions have people come up with for you?
GG: Umm what position do I like in *footy*, things like that.
IPDS: Oh really, you get a wide gammet of things.
Then Dicky Knee (its a puppet of a hat with hair on a stick..don't ask ;)pops up
DK: What's the opening voiceover again on star trek again, how does that go?
GG: No that's not our theme song (note I was cheering saying YOU TELL EM! at this point
;), that's the first one.
DK: Oh right, to go where no man has ever gone before..
GG: Space..nono there's a British accent
DK: Oh right, just like mums side of the bed
GG: Space, the final frontier.
DK: Space, yeah I've got a bit of that between my ears I do apologize.
GG: Oh that's alright
IPDS:I thought you were gonna lead into Star wars there and I thought no you're on the
wrong holodeck there. Thats Dicky Knee by the way.
DK: How you doin.
GG: Hi Dicky
IPDS: Gates, umm, it's an unusual name Gates, its not, is Gates your, were you Christened
Gates?
GG: Yes (sounding slightly affronted)
IPDS: You were?
GG: I was, I was, it's my middle name at birth.
IPDS: Oh I see, so what's your first name?
GG: So now why do you say 'Oh I see', I mean its, its..
IPDS It's just an unusual, I've never met a girl named Gates before..
GG: Oh well.. not Pearly? Pearly..gates?
IPDS: No, I've never met a girl named Gates, or Fence
GG: Heavenly..
IPDS: Backyard, or shed or..
DK: I knew a girl called Gates, she was always swinging.
GG: Exactly. No it just is a family name.
IPDS: A family name, and did your mother and father pick that name for any special reason?
GG: Undoubtedly , but..
IPDS: So they didn't tell you
GG: No they didn't tell me.
IPDS: Right, back to Star Trek, you've just directed an episode haven't you.
GG: Actually it was a while ago, we are not doing the series any more in the States, we
are just doing the movies.
IPDS: Yeah!
GG: We have just done a third movie. I did direct an episode called "Genesis"
and that was, I think, my favorite time during the whole seven years we were shooting, it
was really, really wonderful.
IPDS: Was it easier because you knew all of the other actors so well?
GG: Oh of course, of course! And also we knew the sets, and so you got to do things that
you, I've been always in Sick Bay, and I finally got to use that set the way I wanted to.
Umm usually other people come in and they'll have you do this and that and the other
thing, but I really wanted to um use.., I'd always had these jars of colored water and
no-one had ever used them and they were just *there*, and so I had somebody using those,
for example, and that was sort of an *in* joke.
IPDS: You've got more freedom for that. What about, not the movie, are you in the movie
itself?
GG: Yes, it's called 'Insurrection' and ahh it's..
IPDS: I'm not gonna ask you what an insurrection is! We're still working on holodiciton!
GG:
IPDS: Oh, a crushed Crusher
GG:
IPDS: Oh how *awful*.
GG: I know, it is.
IPDS: We have a little clip from Insurrection which opening, ironically, it's opening on
the last day of the year I believe.
GG: Oh really?
IPDS: New Years Eve if I'm correct.
IPDS: Is it open in the States? Plenty of action there
GG: That's right, that's right. it'll be opening around December in the States.
IPDS: And, oh, so pretty close to when it's opening out here.
GG: Yup! Yup, indeed.
IPDS: Well we wish you luck with the movie and with your..
GG: Thank you.
IPDS: 'Cause you're.. now it's finished you're back in theatre? More full time in theatre?
GG: Actually yes um I did a play and we're hoping that, um, it's anew John Peelmar
IPDS: "Wonderful. You also did Emerald City didn't you?
GG: Yes I did! David Williamson!
IPDS: David Williamson play.
GG: Oh it was such a wonderful, wonderful play. He's an amazing writer and that's
why I've always wanted to come to Melbourne! And I'm here!
IPDS: Yes because the difference between Sydney and Melbourne , and its the plot so..well,
nice to have you here! Sorry it's only been so short, cause you're off to Adelaide
tomorrow, and then you're back to Melbourne and then you're back home or whatever.
GG: And then in Sydney, and then home
IPDS: And then back home, right. Well thanks you Gates for being with us on Hey Hey.
GG: A pleasure, thank you all.
IPDS: And good luck with the movie!
GG: Thank you very much.
IPDS : Gates McFadden!
