Okay. This is my own take on the aftermath of the episode "Dr. Bashir, I Presume." This story takes place immediately after the episode ends (as in like a few minutes after it ends). If you haven't seen the episode, well, you won't be lost (not really) but the story is a major spoiler for it. This story's purpose is to basically break up Dax and Worf and send her running into Julian's arms. ;) There will be a sequel which basically picks up exactly where this one left off.

All characters in the story are property of Paramount. They are Benjamin Sisko, Major Kira, Worf, Odo, Miles O'Brien, Jadzia Dax, Julian Bashir, Quark, and some no-name characters that have been referred to in the show. I'm just borrowing them and twisting them for my own uses. :)

All quotes at the beginning of the chapters are properly documented afterwards. No copyright infringement was meant.

Rating would be PG/PG-13. This one depends on your point of view. There is implied sex between two consenting adults mentioned once, I believe. Other than that, it's pretty clean.

I think that's all. Enjoy!

Truth be Told

Prologue

"I'm listening to the conversation. Judge and jury in my head. It's coloring everything, all we did and said...."

'All neatly fixed, isn't it?' he thought, the lyrics of the old earth song "That Voice Again" by Peter Gabriel running through his head. No one will find out now. At least, not for awhile. But how long can you keep up the charade? Miles knows. Captain Sisko knows. That infernal Doctor Zimmerman knows, although he's under orders to keep quiet about it. Who else will find out? And how long until they do?'

"...and still I hear that sharp tongue talking, talking tangled words. I can sense the danger, just listen to the wind...."

Chapter 1

"I see it in the look that's on your face. Something's not the same inside. You can't keep it from me, no matter how you try. Cause I know you too well for you to ever think you could tell me you lie. Yes I know you too well, no one knows you like I do. And it's so easy to tell, when you look away, there's something you're hiding." -Gloria Estefan "I know you too well"

Jadzia strolled along the Promenade, looking into the various shops and just taking in the sights. She loved just taking the time to observe and she rarely got the chance to do so. She was passing Quark's when she saw Bashir and O'Brien playing darts. But for some odd reason Julian was off to one side attempting to sight a shot. Curious, she stepped in. "Hello," she said.

Both men glanced towards her and smiled. "Dax," Julian said. "What brings you here?"

"You, actually." She saw him raise an amused eyebrow and a teasing glint come into his eye. Ignoring it, she pressed on. "Why are you standing all the way over here?"

Both of them exchanged glances briefly, but Jadzia caught it. "He just got his third bulls eye tonight," Miles explained. "He's playing from there for the rest of the game."

Dax turned back to Julian, who smiled. "I guess I'm just having a good night."

She glanced back and forth between the two men and shrugged. It was a plausible excuse, but something was wrong with it. Seven lifetimes of experience helped when reading people's expressions and the two of them looked like they were hiding something. She smiled none-the-less and said, "Well, I'll leave you to your game." She turned and walked out, deep in thought.

Julian watched her go and then glanced back at Miles. "I really should talk to Captain Sisko about who all should know."

"Yes, but later. Let's finish this game."

"Well, can I at least step in so we won't draw anymore attention?"

"Why? We have a cover story for now, let's keep it."

Julian sighed. "You know, Chief. I haven't been letting you win all the time. I can have off days you know."

"Yes, well, tonight you're not, remember?" Julian sighed again and sighted his throw.

*******

Julian walked up to the Captain's office the next morning and hit the padd to let him know he was there. "Come in," came the muffled response. Julian stepped in, feeling eyes on his back. It was rare that he showed up in Ops during his shift. "Sir, I need to talk to you about something."

"Go ahead doctor," Sisko said, motioning to the chair.

"Sir, who all knows?" Julian asked as soon as the door shut.

Sisko raised an eyebrow. "Just you, Chief O'Brien, Dr. Zimmerman, the Admiral and myself. And your parents, of course."

Julian nodded. "Alright. Who all *should* know? I mean, are you going to tell anyone? The senior staff, for example."

"It's not my story to tell, Doctor."

Julian nodded. After a moment, he stood up and began pacing. "I think people suspect something. I'd like to keep this quiet, but I don't know if I can." He stopped in front of Sisko's desk and spread his hands in a helpless gesture. "This station is a breeding ground for rumors."

Sisko studied the young doctor. "Well, if you want to keep this quiet, then we will. I'd suggest you don't tell anyone else, though." Julian shot a skeptical glance at him. "Yes, I know it won't stop the rumors, but the fewer people that know, the smaller the chance of the entire station finding out." Julian nodded. "Doctor, I can sympathize with you. However, if your secret does get out, I would recommend being completely honest rather than covering up."

"Yes, sir. Thank you, sir." Julian nodded and walked out. Jadzia glanced up at him as he left. "Julian." He stopped and turned toward her. "I was wondering if you would like to have lunch later?"

Julian smiled. "I'd love to. The replimat?"

"Sure. 1300 hours." Julian nodded and stepped onto the turbolift. Jadzia watched him go and then headed into Sisko's office. "Benjamin, what was Julian here for?"

"What do you mean, Dax?"

"Julian was just in here. Why?"

Ben smiled slightly. "Why the sudden interest Dax?"

Jadzia frowned. "He's not been acting like himself lately. I can't explain it but something just seems off about him."

"He was in here about station business. Concern about one of the members of the crew."

Jadzia paused and then nodded. "Thank you, Benjamin." She walked out. 'He just lied to me. If it had been the reason he gave, he wouldn't have told me because Julian would have asked him to keep it confidential. Now I know something is up.' She sighed. 'Plus, Julian's been acting strange ever since his parent's were here. Something is wrong.'

*******

Julian sat at the Replimat, waiting for Jadzia. She was late, which was rare. Suddenly his comm badge chirped. "Dax to Bashir."

He hit his insignia. "Go ahead."

"Could you meet me in the Infirmary in five minutes?"

"Of course. I'll be right there." Julian got up and headed off. He got there and found her pacing back and forth, cradling her right arm. "What can I do for yo...what did you *do*?"

Jadzia extended her hand, letting Julian look at the cuts that crisscrossed her hand. "I broke a glass."

Julian glanced at her and led her over to a bio bed."Have a seat." He picked up a tricorder and scanned her hand. "You still have bits of glass in the wound." He neatly injected a slight pain killer and reached to pick up a pincers. "The pain killer should take some of the edge off, but this still might hurt. He gently pulled her hand under a lighted magnifying glass. "Hold your hand completely open. Like this." He gently stretched her hand out and she gasped. "That hurts," she protested.

"Sorry. But if you want this to heal I have to get the glass out. Now, hold still." Jadzia opened her hand, wincing. Julian gently steadied it with his, cupping his hand under hers. "So, how on *earth* did you manage this?" he asked, carefully pulling out the shards of glass.

"I told you, I broke a glass."

"And what did you do afterwards to get this so imbedded, run your hand through it?"

"No. I sort of slammed it down a little too hard. My hand slammed into the shattered glass."

Julian glanced up from his work. "Why did you slam the glass down so hard?"

Jadzia sighed. "I lost my temper."

"With what?"

"What is this, the third degree?" she snapped.

"No. I'm just doing my job." Julian paused and glanced up. "This one will probably hurt. It's embedded pretty deep." Jadzia nodded. She waited as Julian tried to extract the piece of glass. She bit her lip as he attempted to get a grip on it. After a moment she heard him mutter, "Finally," and she felt like her whole hand was being sliced open again. She gasped and tried to jerk her hand away. Julian tightened his grip. "Don't *move,*" he snapped. She bit her lip and blinked back tears of pain. After several seconds, Julian held up a largish piece of glass. "Good lord," he murmured and glanced at her face. "I'm sorry," he said softly. "I should have given you a higher dose."

Jadzia shook her head, brushing at her eyes with her good hand. "No, that's okay. I don't think it would have helped much." Julian set to work disinfecting and healing the cuts. "So, who or what did you lose your temper at?" he asked.

Jadzia glanced at him. "The computer. It lost half of the data that I had been collecting for a study."

"Completely gone?" he asked. Jadzia nodded. "Well, I'd say that's a valid excuse," he said, turning off the dermal regenerator. "All set." Jadzia flexed her fingers. Julian set to work cleaning up. "So, are we still on for lunch?"

Jadzia nodded. They headed out to the Replimat and ordered their food. Jadzia kept sneaking glances at him. They sat down and ate in silence for a while. After a moment she asked, "Julian, are you alright?"

He glanced at her. "I'm fine. Why do you ask?"

"You've been acting differently lately. Ever since your parents came to the station." She saw an unidentifiable emotion flicker across his face. "What?" she asked.

"What do you mean?"

"You got this look when I mentioned your parents. What was that about?"

Julian studied his plate for a moment and said, "It's nothing. It's just...well, you know. I haven't seen my parents in years. It was just a little awkward. Especially considering the circumstances."

"Hmm," Jadzia said, taking a bite of her meal. "Yes, about that, how did things go?"

"Not well," Julian murmured.

"What? Why not?" Jadzia was shocked.

Julian paused, studying his plate. Fortunately, he was saved by Worf. "Commander," he interrupted. "May I have a word with you?"

Jadzia glanced up at him. "Worf, I'm in the middle of a conversation. Can it wait?"

Worf bristled at the subtle brush off but Julian broke in. "It's alright. You go ahead. I have to get back to work anyhow." He smiled at the both of them and headed off, relieved to be out of there, and feeling Jadzia's gaze following him the entire way. You have to tell her. She already suspects something.' Julian sighed. "So much for keeping this quiet," he muttered to himself.

*******

"I cannot believe you embarrassed me that way," Worf growled.

"What on earth are you talking about? *You* interrupted a conversation."

"Yes, but you are my parmachi." Worf said, conveying that that reason was all she needed.

"So does that mean I come when you call?" she asked sarcastically.

Worf sighed. "I do not wish to continue this conversation here."

"Well that's good because I have to get to Ops." Jadzia stood up.

"Will I see you later?" Worf asked.

"No. I'd like to spend tonight by myself," she replied. I have a lot of thinking to do,' she thought.

Worf nodded gruffly and Jadzia walked off. Dax sighed. She cared about Worf but he could drive her crazy sometimes. She had barely talked to Kira and Julian in so long. Especially Julian. Whenever she sat down with him, Worf showed up to interrupt. He and I have to have a long talk,' she thought.

Chapter 2

"All my instincts, they return and the grand facade, so soon will burn. Without a noise, without my pride, I reach out from the inside." -Peter Gabriel "In Your Eyes"

Julian paced his quarters like a caged animal. "So what should I do?" he asked. "She suspects something is wrong. It's only a matter of time before she figures it out."

"Why don't you just let things be and let her figure it out?" Miles asked.

"Because then she'll get upset at me for not confiding in her."

"Well, it's not like she's been very accessible these days. You can never see her without Worf hovering somewhere nearby."

Julian smiled wryly at O'Brien. "One problem at a time please."

Miles chuckled. "Sorry. So, if you don't want her to just find out for herself, why don't you tell her?"

Julian sighed. "That would make for an interesting lunch conversation. So how are things in Ops? And, oh, by the way. Did I ever mention the fact that I was genetically enhanced as a child?"

"Well, you don't have to be so blunt," Miles complained. "The next time she asks you what's wrong, be honest."

Julian sighed and nodded. "You're right." He glanced at Miles and smiled slightly. "Thank you for listening."

"It's no problem. You need some sage advice from time to time." Julian chuckled. "Well," Miles continued. "I'd best be going. I promised Keiko I'd put the kids to bed tonight."

"Good night, Chief." The door slid shut behind him and Julian sighed. I am going to strangle Zimmerman for this.'

"Dax to Bashir."

"Go ahead."

"Are you free?"

Julian glanced up towards the ceiling, surprised. "Yes. Why?"

"I was wondering if I could talk to you."

Julian sighed. "Sure. Should I come over there or...."

"No. I'll be there in a couple minutes."

"Alright. Bashir out." Julian sighed again. The other shoe drops.'

*******

Jadzia headed towards his quarters. She the more she thought about it, the more worried she became. Something was definitely wrong. She arrived at his quarters and tapped the door command. "Come in!" she heard and entered. Julian smiled at her. "What's on your mind Jadzia?"

"What is wrong?" she asked, cutting to the chase. "And you never answered my question at lunch."

Julian's smile faltered slightly and he looked away. Be honest with her!' He sighed and glanced at her. Her blue eyes were concerned and she studied him intently. "The LMH program," he began. "There was a reason why I was disqualified."

"Disqualified? But why?"

Julian glanced at her and frowned ever so slightly. He gestured for her to sit down. "Dr. Zimmerman found out, inadvertently, that I had been genetically enhanced as a child." Jadzia's eyes widened. "I had asked him not to call my parents here for fear that this would get out and now it has. However, I'd like to keep this quiet. For everyone's sake."

Jadzia stared at him, stunned. "But, how...does Star Fleet know?"

Julian nodded. "They do. In exchange for letting me remain in the service and keeping my practice, my father went to prison for two years on the charge of use of illegal genetic techniques."

Jadzia's shock was beginning to wear off. "So, if Star Fleet knows, why keep it so quiet?"

"Because I'd rather not let the whole station know that I'm...what I am."

"What? A human being?" she asked.

He glared at her. "You know what I mean."

Jadzia sighed and nodded. "Yes, I do. Do you know what *I* mean? You're still the same Julian Bashir."

He shook his head. "I'm not the person you thought I was."

Jadzia sighed. "I'm not saying that this won't take some getting used to, but give the rest of us a chance." They both were quiet for a moment before Jadzia spoke up again. "Exactly what....?"

Julian turned to her. "What was done?" She nodded. He took a deep breath and told her. "...I was a completely different person when they were finished. Everything about me was changed. Height, weight, strength, stamina, everything," he finished.

Jadzia stared numbly. She had no clue what to say. He turned to face her. She simply gazed at him. He sighed and turned away. "In any case, I don't want anyone else to find out. I just want to keep this as quiet as possible and pretend nothing ever happened."

"Julian," she said softly. She stood up. "You can't. This is out in the open now. It's only a matter of time before everyone finds out."

"Only if you, O'Brien or Sisko tell people," he snapped. "You're the only people here that know. I want to keep it that way."

Jadzia walked over to him and gently rested her hands on his shoulders. "If you want me to keep quiet, I will. But, I can tell you that unless you're honest about this, it will come back to haunt you again."

Julian gazed at her. "And how do you think people will react if I do tell them?" he whispered harshly. "I can tell you. They'll be angry, upset. I've lied to everyone for five years. Certain species won't allow me to treat them. I'll lose *everything* I've worked for."

"Have I reacted like that?" she snapped.

He smiled crookedly. "You're not most people, Dax."

"Okay, fine. How about Sisko? O'Brien? They don't care, do they? *Nothing* will change. Not among your friends. Yes, a few species will refuse treatment from you because of this but it will be their loss. You're a wonderful doctor and a caring man. That's what counts."

He gazed at her for a long time. "And if someone dies because they refused to let me treat them?"

Jadzia paused. "We'll cross that bridge when we get there."

Julian glanced away, thinking. He shook his head. "What you say makes sense but, for now, I'd rather just not tell anyone."

Jadzia nodded. "Alright. I won't tell anyone. But, if you change your mind, you know you have 100% of my support."

Julian smiled at her. "Thank you. That means a lot to me." She just smiled and hugged him tightly. After several minutes, she pulled away. "I just have one more question."

"What's that?"

"Why exactly were you standing in the corner playing darts with the Chief last night? I don't believe what he said about you getting the three bulls eyes in one night bit."

Julian smiled slightly. "What, don't you think I could hit three bulls eyes?"

"I didn't say that."

Julian grinned and shook his head. "You're trying to cheer me up, Dax," he chided.

"Is it working?"

"Yes," he grinned.

She smiled. "So, why...?"

"I *did* get three bulls eyes that night," Julian explained. "He wasn't lying about that. It's just that they were consecutive."

"You got three in a row," Dax said, trying not to let her disbelief show.

Julian glanced at her. "You don't believe me."

"I didn't say that, either."

"I can see it on your face," he teased. He had to admit, he felt better having told her. Having to lie to one of his best friends was difficult. He didn't consider not telling them lying. Not really. However, making up excuses to avoid probing questions was another thing.

"Julian?"

"Hmm? Oh, I'm sorry Dax. I was just thinking. What did you say?"

"Nothing. You just looked like you had disappeared for a moment." Jadzia smiled at him. "But, now that I have your attention, I was wondering if you want to go to Quarks. I've been sitting in my quarters relaxing.."

"Finally!" he teased.

"And I'm bored," she continued, ignoring him. "So, do you want to go?"

"Sure." They headed out. Jadzia found herself thinking a lot about this new twist her what she just found out about her friend on their way over. They walked into Quark's and ordered drinks. Jadzia glanced over to the dart board in the corner and, shaking her head, tugged on his arm. "Prove it," she said as they stepped over. "You're right. I don't believe you." Julian arched an eyebrow and picked up the darts after handing her his drink. With an exaggerated sigh of boredom, he tossed the darts across the distance. Jadzia stared in shock as one...two...three darts found their way to the center of the board. She turned back to him and saw him smiling slightly. "Happy?" he asked teasingly.

Dax smiled back at him and handed him his drink. "I suppose," she sighed in mock frustration. Julian chuckled softly and sipped his synthahol He glanced casually around the establishment and winced as he spotted a familiar figure striding towards them. Dammit! Can't I even talk to her without Worf interrupting?' Jadzia followed his gaze and smiled slightly. "Hello Worf," she said as he stepped up to them.

"Commander. Doctor," he intoned formally. He turned back to Jadzia. "May I have a word with you?"

Julian couldn't bite back his disgusted sigh. Both Worf and Dax turned to face him. Dax studied him briefly; Worf simply glared at him. Julian averted his gaze and took a long swallow of his synthahol, briefly wishing that it was an actual alcoholic drink. Real smart, Julian,' he thought in disgust. Dax opened her mouth to say something but he cut her off. "I'm going to get a refill," he said, holding up his glass. He strode off, taking care not to walk to quickly.

Dax studied his back for a moment before turning back to Worf. "You wanted to talk?" she asked.

"I thought you said you wanted to be alone tonight," he said, glaring distrustfully at Julian, who was sipping a new drink up at the bar, occasionally glancing in their direction.

"Well, you know me. I become bored easily," she replied lightly.

"So you went out with Bashir rather than calling me," Worf grumbled.

"Worf," she sighed. "I haven't talked to Julian in a long time. I thought it would be nice to spend some time with one of my friends."

"You had lunch with him this afternoon," Worf protested.

"Which you interrupted," she shot back.

"I do not like you spending time with him," Worf growled.

"He's my *friend*," she sighed. "Are you going to start complaining about my spending time with Nerys too?"

"That is different," Worf replied.

"How?"

"With Kira there are no...ulterior motives that I need to worry about."

Dax stared, shocked and enraged. "Who's ulterior motives?" she growled. "Mine or Julian's?"

Worf frowned. "*Do you* have ulterior motives?"

Dax glared at him. "You still don't trust me, do you?"

Worf sighed and began to speak but she cut him off. "No. Don't say anything. I don't want to get in a fight in the middle of Quark's. I'm going to leave now. We'll discuss this later." She stormed off to the bar where Julian was standing. After a moment, Worf huffed out.

Julian had watched the entire exchange. He shifted his gaze to the Dabo wheels as Dax cut Worf off and stormed away towards him. She announced her arrival at his side by slamming her glass down on the bar. "Careful," Julian said, his gaze not leaving the crowd. "I've already healed that hand once today." He glanced at her. "I take it your talk didn't go too well," he asked sarcastically.

Dax sighed and shook her head. "Forget it," she replied. "He and I will have a talk later."

"I'll ready sickbay," Julian murmured, taking a sip of his drink, ignoring Dax's glance.

*******

The next morning, Julian sat in his office and studied the subspace message. "A medical symposium on Trill" he read aloud. "I suppose it wouldn't kill me to go." Julian hit his comm badge."Bashir to Sisko."

"Sisko here."

"Sir, I just received a transmission about a medical symposium being held on Trill Are any of the runabouts free?"

"The Ganges is at your disposal doctor if you want it."

"Thank you sir." He was about to cut the transmission when Sisko asked. "Doctor, have you told Jadzia about this?"

"No. I just received it. Why?"

"I just thought she'd be interested in going along with you. I don't think she's been to her home world since...."

"I see. Well, I'll mention it to her."

"Good. Sisko out." Julian paused for a heartbeat before hitting his comm badge. again. "Bashir to Dax."

"Go ahead Julian."

*******

"You're going to Trill?" Worf asked.

"Yes. I haven't been home in a long time. Julian offered to let me come along so I took it."

Worf frowned. "I am not sure I like this arrangement."

Dax glared at him. "Don't start Worf."

Worf's frown deepened. "When will you be back?"

"They symposium lasts a week."

Worf nodded and wished her a good trip. Jadzia smiled and sighed.

Chapter 3

"Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned. I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am." -Supertramp "The Logical Song"

Julian neatly piloted the runabout away from the station. This is a first. Usually Jadzia attempts to steal the conn,' he thought, smiling amusedly.

"What's so funny?" Julian glanced over his shoulder and smiled at her. "Nothing," he replied. "It's just that I can't recall a time that you let me pilot a runabout away from the station."

"I was storing my stuff," she protested. Julian chuckled and turned back to the control panel. Jadzia studied him for a long time. She was still trying to assimilate what he had told her. It really threw a different light on the past. She sighed softy. Julian turned. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," she said. She saw a trace frown cross his features and he turned back to the console. Jadzia took the seat next to him and studied the readouts. Everything seemed in order. She shot a glance at him and shook her head. She heard him sigh and he said, "If you want to ask me questions, go ahead."

Jadzia glanced at him and faced forward again. "It's nothing. It doesn't matter."

Julian turned towards her. "Jadzia, you don't have to worry about embarrassing me. I'll admit, I'm not completely comfortable with talking to people about it but if you want to ask me questions," he shrugged his shoulders, "I won't mind."

She turned to face him. He held her gaze for a moment. She sighed and turned away. "It's just...how old were you?"

"Seven," he replied softly. He waited for a moment and then sighed. "I was seven when my parents took me. I still don't quite understand their reasoning. Yes, I was short and a bit awkward for my age and I was falling further behind my classmates with each day but," he sighed, "I still can't quite understand it. They never really gave me a chance.... I found out when I was fifteen. I'd grown up learning about Kahn Singh and the Eugenic wars and being as disgusted with the next person with what Kahn did. Then I find out that *I* was genetically enhanced. That I had been living a lie for eight years and that my parents never told me."

Jadzia studied him. She couldn't do anything but sit there stunned. She opened her mouth and closed it again. She wasn't quite sure what to say. Perhaps it's best if you don't say anything at all,' she thought.

Julian glanced at her and smiled slightly. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go on like that..."

"It's alright. I...I think it's best that you get this out. I'm glad that you trust me enough to tell me this."

Julian studied her for a long time and then smiled. "Thank you." She opened her mouth to say something but he held up a hand. "I mean it. I'm glad I have a friend like you to talk to." Jadzia smiled at him. They sat in silence for a long time, each lost in their own thoughts. After a moment, Julian stood up. "I'm going to do some reading on the symposium. Let me know if anything happens." She nodded and he walked into the back of the runabout. Jadzia's eyes followed him out and she sat staring at the back for a long moment. She sighed and turned towards the front. She had wanted to say so much to him, to try and give him advice or comfort him somehow but she couldn't get the words out. She hesitated for a moment and then put the runabout on autopilot. She headed into the back and found him sitting with a cup of coffee reading a PADD. "Julian?" He glanced up startled. "Jadzia, what is it?"

She paused, wondering what to tell him. That everything would be okay? Even she wasn't sure about that. If the wrong person found out, he'd lose everything. Fortunately, he smiled understandingly. "It's alright, Dax. You don't have to give me any sage words of advice. I've pretty much heard them all."

Jadzia smiled and shook her head. "It's just that this is a lot for me to take in. I guess I really can't give any advice until I get used to this." She saw him smile sadly and glance down at his PADD. "Julian, it's not that I still don't respect you or consider you my friend. I'd like to think I'm a bit more mature than that." He glanced back up, an amused smile lifting one corner of his mouth and nodded. "I understand, Jadzia. You don't have to explain."

"I feel like I have to," she admitted. "I just want you to know that, no matter what, nothing will change between us. Even if your next bit of news is that you're Romulan surgically altered to look human." Julian laughed. "Who told?" he teased, his dark eyes glinting. She smiled at him and gave his shoulder a squeeze. He gently set his hand on hers. "Thank you." She nodded and smiled. "I should get back up front, just in case." Julian nodded. She walked back up front, feeling a bit better. Things had already been strained between them since she started seeing Worf. She had to admit, she missed his company. She didn't want anything else to hurt their relationship. He means too much to me,' she thought. At least we can make up for lost time on this trip.'

*******

"What do you want for lunch?" he asked.

Jadzia looked up. "Oh, just some soup will be fine."

Julian sighed. "What kind?"

She shrugged. "Whatever."

Julian scowled at her and turned to the replicator. "Two dishes of hummus and pita bread and two potato leek soups." The replicator whined and Julian carried over their lunches.

Jadzia frowned. "I didn't ask for hummus," she protested as he set the plate in front of her.

He frowned at her. "You didn't have any breakfast and all you want for lunch is soup? Not while I'm here." He broke off a chunk of pita and dipped in into the hummus.

Jadzia raised an eyebrow and shook her head. "You're worse than my mother." Julian chuckled. "I hope that this symposium doesn't eat up all your time. I've barely seen you lately. I was hoping to show you around a bit, seeing as last time we were here we really didn't have the opportunity."

Julian nodded. "You know, considering what happened last time, I'm surprised they invited me. I'm hardly the most popular person on Trill."

Jadzia smiled. "They probably realized that to leave such an incredible doctor out on the basis of some minor disagreements would be a grave mistake."

Julian chuckled, "Thank you but I really don't see holding a civilization hostage as a minor disagreement.' " Jadzia laughed. They ate in silence for a while. After a bit, Julian got up to take his plates back to the replicator. "Are you done?" he asked. Jadzia glanced down at her empty bowl and the remains of the hummus. "I suppose so." Julian smiled and took her plates. "Thank you," she said as he walked back to the replicator and tapped the commands on it.

"You're welcome." He sank down in the co-pilot's chair and started out at the stars. His mind wandered until it came to rest on his conversation with Miles the other night. One problem at a time,' he had said. Jadzia,' he thought and suppressed a sigh. He had been shocked when she and Worf had limped in to sick bay together. He remembered feeling like the floor had dropped out from beneath him. Ever since then, their relationship had been strained. He rarely saw her without Worf around, making it difficult to talk to her. Jadzia's outgoing personality seemed to be a direct contrast to Worf's reclusiveness. Hell, he lived on the Defiant instead of the station. Julian still couldn't understand what she saw in him. He has the courage of a berserker cat and the heart of a poet,' she had said. Big deal," Julian thought. He's also rude, domineering and possessive.' Lunch the other day was a good example. So was last night at Quark's. Not that *you* pursing a relationship with her would be any better. A one night stand or a casual affair would ruin your friendship and anything more serious would lead to...entanglements.' He sighed softly.

"Entering Trill space," Jadzia announced. Julian glanced over at her and nodded. She stood up. "I'm going to change. Will you be alright?"

"I can pilot a runabout, Jadzia," he replied. She smiled and headed in back. He glanced at the conn panel. There was some traffic in the sector, so Julian didn't take much notice to the ship that approached them. However, when the runabout shuddered under the phaser fire, he leapt to attention. "What the hell was that?" Jadzia shouted, running up from the back.

"Someone's firing on us," Julian said, trying to outmaneuver the ship and fire at the same time.

"Transfer helm control to me," Jadzia said, sliding into the chair.

"One moment," Julian muttered. He swung the runabout in a sharp upward turn. Jadzia gripped the conn to stop herself from falling out of the chair. "Here you go," he said. Jadzia's hands flew to life while Julian tried to locate the ship. "I think we lost...." Another volley of phaser fire skittered across the shields. Something behind them exploded, making them hunch over their controls.

"Any idea who's doing this?" Jadzia shouted.

"None. I didn't even notice them until they started firing on us."

"We're coming up on the Tymari system. We can lose them in there." Julian nodded and Jadzia swung the runabout towards the system.

"They're in pursuit," Julian reported. "There's an asteroid field between the fourth and fifth planets. We can try to lose them in there." Jadzia nodded and piloted the runabout into the field. "Are they still there?" she asked, concentrating on the helm.

Julian paused, scanning. "It's hard to tell. There's radiation in the belt here that's making it a bit difficult."

"Well," Jadzia murmured. "If we can't scan for them, that probably means they can't scan for us." Julian started to nod when the runabout shook violently. "Scratch that," Jadzia said. "I've got to get us out of here. If we lose control in the middle of this...." She started to pull the runabout out of the field. Julian attempted to get a lock on the ship. He was about to fire when his eyes caught something on the screen. "Look out!" he shouted. Jadzia's head snapped up and her eyes widened. Her hands flew over the controls and the runabout arced wildly away from the asteroid. However, the port nacelle clipped it. Explosions came from all around them and Julian felt like he was in the middle of a fireworks display. He felt the runabout lurch from another volley of phaser fire. "I've lost almost all helm control!" Jadzia shouted.

"The fourth planet is class M. Can we set down there?"

"I don't know." Jadzia's hands flew over the controls as she desperately fought for control. Julian scanned for the ship, trying to pinpoint where it was and make one last attempt to identify it. "Entering atmosphere."

"The other ship is firing!" Julian shouted. The runabout shifted and plunged downward as the phasers struck.

"Damn," Dax murmured. "The helm's dead."

"Can you try to keep the nose up?" Julian asked as the runabout shuddered around them.

"I don't know...."

The runabout slammed through a small forest, clipping off tops of trees. Jadzia struggled with the controls. "Impact in ten seconds!" Julian braced his hands against the panel. When the runabout hit the ground, the world around them exploded.

Chapter 4

"Magic moments. They're the things I will remember. Where's the time we spent together laughing?" -Journey "When I Think of You"

Julian groaned and tried to move. He opened his eyes and glanced around. The runabout was a wreck. He shifted and pulled himself up, ignoring the pain in his left wrist and his chest . "Jadzia?" he called. He heard a soft moan and glanced over in that direction. "Jadzia!" he cried and slid over to her side. Her face was cut up and a piece of metal was impaled in her arm. Her torso was pinned under a piece of bulkhead.

"Julian?" Her voice was so faint he almost didn't hear her.

"I'm here," he said softly.

She winced. "I can't move," she murmured.

"Just hold on. I'll get you out." He shifted to get a better grip on the bulk head. He grunted as he tried to move it. It didn't budge. He closed his eyes and relaxed a moment. He tried again but to no avail. "It's no use," she murmured.

"No," he hissed through his teeth. "This *will* move. Give me a moment." He stumbled over wreckage to a medkit and ran a tricorder over his hand. "Sprained," he muttered. He injected a pain killer and went back, bringing the kit with him. Don't have enough time to fix it,' he thought as Jadzia's eyes met his. "Hang on. You'll be out in to time."

"Julian, there's no way you can move this."

Julian gripped the bulk head. "You keep forgetting who you're talking to." He shifted and began to lift. It moved, but not enough to get her out. Jadzia's eyelids began to droop. "Oh, no you don't," he said. "You're staying with me. Come on," he gently slapped her cheeks. She opened her eyes. "Stay awake." He took a deep breath and began to lift. Jadzia watched him straining to lift it. She felt the pressure lessen on her abdomen. Suddenly she realized she could move. She managed to drag herself out from underneath. With a gasp, he let it drop. Julian cradled his left hand and moved next to her, pulling the kit with him and opening the tricorder one handed. "What's wrong with your left hand?" she asked drowsily.

"It's sprained," he replied as he scanned her. Lacerations on her face, a broken arm, several cracked and bruised ribs, a concussion, and the wound on her arm.' "Hang on," he murmured as he gripped the shard. He pulled on it and it came out, causing the wound to bleed freely. Jadzia whimpered softly. "Sorry," he whispered. "I wish I could give you a pain killer but you have a severe concussion. You need to stay awake." She simply nodded. He stopped the flow of blood and bandaged the wound neatly. "I've got to set your arm now." He reached and gently pulled her arm up. He paused and then snapped the bone into place. She let out a yelp. "Sorry." He neatly secured it in a splint. He scanned her again with the tricorder. "Well, that looks like the worst of it. I just need to bind your ribs." She nodded and managed to sit up with his help. He neatly wrapped her ribs up. "Alright. Now let me just take care of the cuts." She nodded and leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. She felt him take hold of her chin and begin to run the regenerator over the cuts on her face. After a moment, he stopped. "There. All set." Jadzia opened her eyes and smiled wanly at him. "How's your wrist?"

Julian winced. He had managed to block out the pain for the most part. "Give me a moment." He picked up the tricorder and scanned himself. Severely sprained wrist, three cracked ribs, and a couple cuts.' He picked up a tendon reknitter and set to work on his hand. Jadzia sat and watched as he neatly ran it over his wrist. He then healed the cuts on his hands and face. "I'm going to need your help taping my ribs," he murmured softly. "Think you can manage to sit up?" Jadzia nodded. She shifted and sat up and helped him tape his ribs up. After they finished, he sank against the bulkhead next to her. "So, now what?" he asked.

"Do we have any idea at all who attacked us?"

Julian hesitated. I should tell her. But I don't know for certain if it was them. If I'm wrong....' "It was a Trill ship in design. Other than that, no." He shifted again. "So, how long do you think it will take before they find us?"

Jadzia sighed. "I don't know." She paused. "My parents are expecting me at about this time. Once I don't show, they'll contact the authorities." Julian nodded and winced as pain radiated through him. He was tempted to give himself a painkiller but he needed to stay awake and keep Jadzia awake. "So, now what?"

Jadzia paused. "Well, we could go out and look around."

"Do you think you can walk?" Jadzia nodded. He struggled to stand up and then helped her up. She sagged against him. "On second thought," he said, softly. "What do you say you go lay down in the back for awhile."

"I thought you said I can't sleep."

"You can't. But you can't walk and you can barely sit up." He managed to get her into one of the rooms and helped her lay down on the bed. She closed her eyes for a moment. He sank down next to the bed and leaned against it. "So," he said, trying to keep her talking. "What were you planning to do on Trill?"

"Oh, visit with friends and family. Maybe camp out a couple nights in the Verdinain Forest." She shifted slightly, trying to get comfortable.

"Hmm. Sounds relaxing," he murmured. "I'm sorry about this."

"What? It's not your fault."

Julian shook his head. "I didn't even notice that ship until it was too late. I could have done something."

Jadzia sighed. "It's not your fault. Stop pretending it is."

Julian sighed in response. "You mentioned camping?"

"Mm hmm. The Verdinain Forest. It's really beautiful there. You'd love it. It's very remote, very peaceful. I used to love going there as a kid."

Julian smiled. "Sorry you didn't make it. It sounds like exactly what you need right now."

Jadzia grinned in response. "What did you have planned besides the conference?"

"Nothing really. I was planning on asking you about it."

Jadzia yawned. "How long do I have to stay awake?"

"Until I'm convinced that there won't be any side effects."

"Such as?"

"Coma comes to mind."

"Right," Jadzia sighed. "Well, in that case, how about a stimulant?"

Julian chuckled. "I'd love to, but I don't think I can move," he responded playfully.

Dax laughed weakly in response. "Julian!"

Julian smiled. "Give me a moment." He shifted and started to stand up. He groaned softly as he stood. "You owe me," he mumbled, walking out. He retrieved the medkit from where he left it and walked back in. She tried to sit up when he entered but failed miserably. Julian smiled softly. "Hold on." He opened the medkit and hunted for a mild stimulant. He pulled it out and gently injected it. "This should help wake you up a bit." She smiled at him. "You want to sit down?" she asked. He smiled at her gratefully. He sank down at the end of the bed, leaning back against the wall and gently placed her legs across his. She sighed. "So, if we figure that my parents will report me missing and check with the authorities they'll find out that we never arrived. They'll contact the station and start looking. Benjamin will probably send someone out here to help. How long do you think it will take for them to find us?"

Julian looked thoughtful. "Provided the emergency transceiver is still working, three days?"

Jadzia nodded and winced. "What's wrong?" he asked.

"Just sore," she replied.

"Nothing else?" She shook her head. "No. Not really." He studied her face for a moment and gently reached and gave her hand a squeeze. He knew she had to be in an excruciating amount of pain. She smiled at him and returned the gesture. He started to let go of her hand but she maintained her grip. He smiled at her and rested his head against the wall. "I miss this," he said softly. "I barely see you anymore."

She glanced at him and smiled. "I know. I miss it too."

Julian sighed. "Why don't you talk to Worf about it? I mean, you have your own friends. He has to accept that."

Jadzia sighed. "Julian. You have to understand. What we consider rude and what not is perfectly normal behavior for a Klingon."

Julian shook his head. "I don't see how being overbearing and possessive is normal behavior."

"You're not a Klingon."

"Thank god," Julian muttered.

Jadzia glanced at him. "You don't like Worf, do you."

He sighed. "It's not that, it's just I have a hard time getting along with someone who would rather live away from everyone else than stay around friends. The Chief says that he was never this reclusive on the Enterprise. He'd play poker with the senior officers and would actually spend time with his son on the holodecks. A far cry from the Worf we know."

Jadzia sighed. She really didn't know what to say. A lot of times she felt like Julian did. She sometimes felt it was like pulling teeth go get Worf to loosen up. Plus he really did get on her nerves with his possessiveness. She glanced at Julian and saw that his eyelids were drooping. She smiled softly. "Why don't you get some sleep. You look exhausted."

"No. Someone has to make sure you'll stay awake."

"I'll be fine. Get some sleep." He smiled and sighed. "Alright. You win." She smiled and glanced up at the ceiling, allowing her mind to wander. He's right about a lot of things. Worf is very possessive. He doesn't seem to want to fit in here. Our vacation on Risa was a disaster. Regardless of his past, it still doesn't explain how he acts here. I've talked to Miles about him too. He just doesn't seem to want to belong. I can honestly say that I've been toying with the idea of breaking things off with him for months but every time I decide to end things, he does something incredibly sweet. And it's not like things are always bad. Most of the time things are wonderful.' Jadzia sighed. He does care about things. He's brave, strong, but startlingly sensitive at times. I just wish he would relax. Learn how to appreciate some of the finer things. Have a sense of adventure that doesn't involve honor. Just a love for the unknown. A general enjoyment of life. A sense of humor...that other people understand. Someone social, who doesn't shy away from people. Someone like....' her thoughts trailed off. She felt her cheeks heat up and she glanced at Julian. He was sleeping soundly, his head bowed gently. She glanced at their hands. His skin was so dark against hers. She closed her eyes and remembered earlier, how he had struggled to move the bulkhead. He hadn't sprained his wrist moving it, it was sprained before hand. He had completely ignored his injuries to make sure she was alright. She sighed softly. She knew Worf would do the same, but would he do it out of honor or pure concern for her? She knew what motivated Julian. Worf....maybe a mixture of both but not simply concern. Honor was always present in whatever he did. But is that a bad thing?' she thought. She glanced at Julian, suddenly very confused.

On Trill, Jadzia's mother was impatiently pacing in front of the communications relay. She was waiting for a response from DS9 as to what was happening. Suddenly the comm relay chimed, signaling a message. She hit the button. "Captain Sisko?"

"Yes. I have spoken with the Trill Defensive ministry. They said that there had been an attack on a vessel earlier today along the same route they would have taken." He straightened. "Considering that they haven't arrived, I'm assuming that it was their ship. However," he continued, attempting to comfort her, "both Dax and Dr. Bashir are good pilots and there were several M class planets in the area of the attack, mostly uninhabited. If they were attacked, they probably would have set down on one of those planets. I'm sending out two of my officers to run a sweep of all the systems for any trace of them. Don't worry. We'll find them." Sisko smiled and cut the communication. The older woman sighed and turned around. "They're doing everything they can," she said softly. Her husband and daughter looked mildly relieved but worry was still prevalent on their faces.

Chapter 5

"We can sit here all night long and separate the right from the wrong, but love won't wait. Cantcha say you believe in me? Can't you say you believe in me? You know that where there's a will, there's a way. Cantcha say you believe in me? Cantcha see what you mean to me?" -Boston "Cantcha Say?"

Julian stirred. Jadzia glanced at him, hoping she hadn't woken him up with her shifting about. Unfortunately, his eyes fluttered open. She smiled. "Feel better?" she asked.

"Actually, I'm quite stiff from sleeping like that," he admitted. He glanced at her. "How do you feel?"

"Aside from the aches, I'm fine." He smiled and reached for the medkit. He pulled out a tricorder and scanned her. "Well, you seem to be healing just fine."

"Glad to hear it," she teased. "How about you?"

Julian glanced up at her. Obligingly, he turned the tricorder on himself. "I'm fine. Aside from the aches," he echoed. He handed her the tricorder for her own assessment. She studied it and smiled. "Just had to check," she said softly. "You have the nasty habit of ignoring your own health when you put your mind to it." He smiled at her. "In that case, are you feeling up to walking a bit?" he asked. "I think it would do me some good to get the kinks out but I don't want to leave you."

Jadzia shifted. "One way to find out." She let him up and he extended a hand to help her up. She slid off the bed and swayed for a moment, but managed to stay standing. He smiled and supported her as they walked to the back of the runabout. He hit the unlock padd and opened the door. Outside, they discovered that they were in a clearing in a forest. A couple of trees looked a little worse for wear from their "landing" but other than that the scene was breathtaking. The trees were lush, full of leaves. Multi-colored flowers grew randomly around the clearing. He heard Jadzia expel a breath in wonder. They stepped out. Julian could feel the stiffness slowly ebbing away. He took a deep breath of fresh air. "This is wonderful," he said. Jadzia smiled at him and took a few steps. She turned slowly, ignoring her aching ribs. She winced as she saw the damage to the runabout. "O'Brien's going to kill us." Julian turned and winced. Jadzia sighed and turned around, admiring the pastoral scene. Her ears perked up as she heard the sound of running water. "Julian, let's head this way. I think I hear water." Julian nodded and they walked off, Julian gently supporting her. She could feel the ache begin to wear off as she moved through the forest. They reached another clearing along a river bank. She smiled and sank down on the bank and motioned for Julian to do the same. He sat down next to her. "You know, I'm almost beginning to consider thanking whoever attacked us. We wouldn't have found this place otherwise." Jadzia smiled at him, enjoying the sun. She tilted her head back slightly and glanced up. She immediately felt the world shift around her and she collapsed on the ground, trying to shake off the dizziness. She heard Julian cry out her name and when she could focus her eyes again, she found him leaning over her, concern apparent in his hazel eyes. "Are you alright?" he asked softly.

Jadzia swallowed, fighting the nausea that had accompanied the dizzy spell. "I'm fine. I just got dizzy there for a moment." He saw his hazel eyes darken with concern. "Maybe we should head back," he said softly. "No. I'm fine," she replied. She saw him frown softly. "In a bit, alright?" He nodded reluctantly. He reached to help her up but she shook her head. "I'm comfortable. Besides, it's amazing to just look up once in a while." He smiled at her. She gently pat the ground next to her. Julian shifted awkwardly but sank down. It felt good to lay down. He hadn't allowed himself that luxury since they crashed for fear that he wouldn't want to get back up again. He gazed up towards the tops of the trees. He felt himself relaxing at the sight and the sound of the brook. He was slightly startled when she reached for his hand but relaxed when she gave it a friendly squeeze. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to drift in and out of sleep.

Jadzia gazed at him and felt her confusion return. She remembered the first few months on the station. He had been so awkward, stuttering and constantly hitting on her. She had been flattered by the attention and had even enjoyed it. He had been right about that. Now, she had to admit, she missed it. She studied his sleeping form, wondering how well she truly knew him. His dark hair fell in ringlets that occasionally fell into his face. She reached out and gently brushed them back, amazed at the warmth of his skin. Almost absently, she brushed her hand over his cheek.

Julian felt his throat tighten at her touch. He didn't quite know what to do. She obviously thinks I'm asleep,' he thought. But what do I do now? Pretend to wake up?' He decided that he would wait until she pulled her hand away before waking up. Otherwise it would tell her I had been awake.' He felt her fingertips gently tracing his cheek and jaw. It was all he could do to not to shiver. He was about to reconsider his idea when he felt her lips press gently against his. Julian felt the blood rush to his cheeks in embarrassment and delight. Oh, gods! When she pulls back she's going to see me blushing like an idiot! What on *earth* am I going to say?'

Jadzia pulled back, wondering what had possessed her to do that. She glanced at him and saw that his cheeks were flushed. She let out a strangled gasp. Oh, my god. He had been awake!' Julian opened his eyes and glanced at her and their eyes locked. She saw him swallow hard, his dark eyes questioning. Jadzia felt the blood rush to her face and she turned away and sat up. Oh gods, what did I do?' She didn't know what to think.

Julian studied her back and then sat up. He gently rested his hand on her shoulder. He took a deep breath, trying to collect his thoughts. "Jadzia?" he ventured softly. She didn't turn. He sighed and slid closer to her. He reached and gently turned her chin so she was facing him. "Talk to me," he whispered. Jadzia felt the blush creep back into her cheeks and she looked away but he caught her chin and lifted her face to meet his. He gazed at her and gently ran his thumb over her lips. He leaned in and gently kissed her, not quite sure why and not wanting to take the time to figure it out. He felt her lean into him and wrap her arms around him. Julian shivered with delight. After a long moment, he pulled away slightly. Jadzia gently press the tip of her nose against his, tenderly brushing her fingertips down his jaw. She kissed him gently after a moment. He closed his eyes and tenderly deepened the kiss. After what seemed like an eternity, she pulled back. He met her gaze and she smiled slightly. Julian smiled in response and glanced up. The sun was slowly setting. "We should get back to the runabout," he whispered.

She snuggled closer to him. "After the sun sets," she whispered in response. Julian glanced at her and smiled. He wrapped his arms carefully around her, not wanting to hurt her ribs. She leaned back against him. They rested against each other and watched the sun slowly sink below the horizon. Jadzia felt a warm glow fill her and he gently hugged her. He released her and stood up. "We should get back before we can't even see where we're going." She nodded and he helped her up, gently slipping his arm around her waist. They headed back to the runabout and managed to hunt up enough food rations to last a couple days. They had a small dinner and then retired to the bunks. Before they fell asleep, Julian insisted on checking her one last time to make sure she was alright. Jadzia smiled at him and allowed him to run the tricorder over her. He glanced at the results and nodded, apparently satisfied. He sank down next to her and gently pulled her close. "Now, I order you to get at least eight hours of sleep," he murmured, kissing her gently.

"Yes, sir," she replied teasingly, returning the kiss. They curled up together on one of the beds, occasionally kissing and caressing the other. They eventually fell asleep, wrapped in each other's arms.

*******

Kira sighed in frustration. They had been through two systems near where the runabout had been attacked two days ago. So far, there had been no sign of them. I don't know what's worse. Not knowing if they're dead or alive or having to deal with Worf.' She glanced at the sullen Klingon. Definetely having to deal with Worf.'

"Setting course for the Tymari system," Kira announced.

"Why?" Worf growled. "There's only one M class planet in the system."

"Because one: there's an asteroid belt that they might have tried to hide in and two: we're under orders to search all M class planets in the sector," Kira retorted.

"The Admaris system has three M class planets in it. If Dax were running from the ship, she would go there. There would be a better chance of survival."

"Yes, but what if Dax wasn't piloting the runabout? What if Julian was? It makes more sense to head to the asteroid belt. The sensors are picking up low level radiation in it. It would make their attackers sensors completely useless."

Worf studied the data and nodded gruffly. "Alright," he conceded.

Chapter 6

"Only love can really break your heart. But we must feel the pain before the pleasure. Only then can we tell them apart." -Gloria Estefan "The Heart Never Learns"

Julian stirred slightly, feeling the residual aches from the other day. He opened his eyes and found Jadzia's blue ones gazing back at him. He smiled. "Morning," he said, gently kissing her.

"Hmm," she murmured, slowly sliding her arms around his back. She let one hand slide down to his waist and the other up to the nape of his neck. She gently deepened the kiss, feeling him respond. After a moment she pulled away. "How are you feeling?" she asked.

"Much better," he said, gently kissing her. She smiled at him. "How about you?"

"Still a little sore, but other than that," she shrugged. He smiled and kissed her again. Dax relaxed briefly and then felt guilt wash over her as Worf's face came into her mind. She pulled back quickly. "Julian," she began. She felt him sigh. "I know. I knew this was too good to last," he murmured, gently tracing the line of spots that framed her face. He pulled away and sat up.

"Julian," she said, sitting up behind him. She gently wrapped her arms around his shoulders. "It's not that I don't care about you. I do. It's just that it's..."

"Worf," he finished for her. "I know." She reached and gently took hold of his chin. She gazed into his eyes for a long time, completely forgetting what she was going to say. She swallowed and glanced away, trying to break the spell. She was mildly frightened by the emotions she was feeling for him. I'm with Worf! This isn't right. Or is it?' She lifted her chin and gazed at him. He gently kissed her. She realized that if anything was going to happen between them, it was for her to decide. He had made his feelings perfectly clear. It was for her to decide. She felt him pull away. She sighed softly and rested her forehead against his, sinking into his embrace. She suddenly felt the familiar tingle of the transporter beam. When they rematerialized, she lifted her head and saw Worf standing there, Kira in the background. She pulled out of Julian's arms quickly, but the damage was done. Worf's gaze flicked from her to Julian and back to her again. He simply turned back to the console and said, "Setting course for DS9."

Julian frowned. "Wait a minute," he protested, standing up. He extended a hand to Jadzia. "I rather we go to Trill I have a couple questions to ask."

Worf spun in his seat and glared at the doctor. To Julian's credit, he didn't even flinch. "Captain Sisko wants to speak with the both of you about this."

"He can talk to us over subspace," Julian snapped. "I want to know why we were attacked by a Trill ship and the only place that I can get those answers is on Trill Besides, I'm sure Jadzia's family would want to see her." Worf's glare deepened. Fortunately, Kira broke in. "The doctor's right Worf. Set course for Trill, warp 3." Worf frowned but turned and punched in the command.

Julian glanced at Kira. "Major, do you have a decent medkit here? The one on the runabout was only an emergency kit." Kira nodded and handed it to him. Julian nodded his thanks and turned to Jadzia. "Let's go mend those ribs," he said. She nodded and headed towards the back, glancing over her shoulder at Worf. Once they were out of earshot Julian sighed. "I'm sorry," he whispered.

Jadzia waved him off. "No. It's not your fault." She sank down on the bed and closed her eyes. He gently ran the regenerator over her broken ribs. He had just finished when he heard a sound from the door. He turned and saw Worf standing there. Jadzia sat up. "What can I do for you commander?" Julian asked.

"I would like to speak with Commander Dax."

"In a minute," Julian replied coolly. "I'm not finished yet." Turning back to Dax he gestured to her shoulder. "Let's have a look," he said. Julian could practically feel Worf's anger at being brushed off like that. However, he really didn't care. Julian gently removed the bandage that covered the wound on her arm. He heard a soft huff from behind him and realized Worf had left. Jadzia glanced at him. "Julian...."

He shook his head. "Don't worry. I can handle myself when it comes to Worf. Let's get you fixed up." She watched as he competently worked on her arm. Within minutes he had finished healing the wound and had turned to her broken forearm. "There," he said after he had finished. "Good as new." Jadzia smiled at him and gently kissed the tip of his nose. "Thank you."

"Just doing my job," he smiled. He helped her off the bed. He started to head back to the front when she stopped him. "Julian, what about you?"

He glanced at her. "I'm fine."

"Don't give me that. I saw the tricorder. You have at least three cracked ribs. Get back here." Julian sighed and walked back. Jadzia picked up the regenerator and glanced at him. "Have a seat, doctor."

*******

Kira sat at the helm, studying the readouts. Worf was pacing behind her. She was trying her best to ignore him. "Approaching Trill," she reported just as Julian and Jadzia came from the back. "Everything set doctor?" Kira asked. She was also trying to ignore what she had seen when they beamed them aboard.

Julian nodded. He and Jadzia stepped onto the transporter. "Energizing," Kira said. They disappeared. She glanced at Worf. "Make yourself comfortable Commander."

"Aren't we beaming down also?"

"No, we're going to land this at the space port and walk over. It will give you time to cool down." Worf growled. "Or dwell on the matter," Kira muttered.

*******

"Jadzia!" She glanced up and smiled as her mother rushed over. They hugged. "Hello mother."

"We were all so worried! When you didn't arrive we began to expect the worst."

"Well, I'm fine." Jadzia glanced at Julian. "Mom, this is Dr. Julian Bashir. Julian, this is my mother." Julian smiled and extended his hand. "A pleasure to meet you," he said.

"Doctor," she said warmly. "I've heard quite a bit about you."

Julian glanced at Jadzia amused. "All good, I hope."

"Of course," her mother replied, smiling. Dax was blushing. She turned to Julian. "You said you wanted some questions answered. Do you know who you need to see?"

Julian nodded. "I'll see you later. Where can we meet?"

Jadzia paused. "How about here in one hour?"

Julian nodded and headed off. He sighed. He hated lying to her but he didn't want her to know who had fired on them. For her sanity.

Jadzia turned to her mother who was watching him walk off. "He's quite handsome," she said, shooting her daughter a look.

"Mom," Jadzia sighed. "Let's not get into this...."

*******

Worf growled angrily. They had to wait for fifteen minutes before they could land. Now, it was a fifteen minute walk into the city. He couldn't get the image of the two of them out of his mind. He swore when he got his hands on that doctor...no. That would do nothing but get him kicked out of Star Fleet at warp speed. He did know that he and Jadzia would have to have a talk.

Julian walked into the office. The man behind the desk looked up and started. It was a small slip in his emotional control, but Julian noticed it. "Doctor Bashir! We all thought you were dead!"

"Yes, well, I guess you could say I'm pretty resilient. We have some things to discuss."

"Really? What's that?"

Julian pulled out a phaser. "Why did the Trill guard attack our runabout?"

"What do you mean?"

"Don't play dumb with me. The scanners identified the ship as yours. I saw the mark of the guard on the hull of the ship."

The man studied the doctor for a moment and then asked, "What do you want?"

Julian smiled.

Chapter 7

"Take away your companies. Take away your societies and go. Get me off this backwards ride. Take away your fictitious book of facts." -Rusted Root "Ecstasy"

An hour later, Julian met Jadzia, Kira and Worf at the beam in sight. "Did you get your answers Doctor?" Kira asked.

"Yes. The Trill guard has discovered the identity of the ship thanks to some of the passing traffic. It appeared to have been a small scout ship."

"You said it was Trill design," Jadzia said.

"It was. There was a theft of a small private ship from the docks recently. They still haven't figured out who did it. But whoever did is probably the person who attacked us."

Jadzia studied him and shrugged. "So, in other words, they didn't tell you anything."

"No, I suppose not."

"We should get going," Kira said. "Unless the two of you want to stay for the conference and whatnot."

Julian shook his head. "No. Let's go home." Jadzia nodded her assent and they headed off to the runabout. Worf was shooting daggers at Julian the entire time but he did his best to ignore it. Granted, having a Klingon wishing you were dead was somewhat unnerving but he wouldn't give Worf the satisfaction of knowing that. Julian instead turned his thoughts to his meeting.

*******

"What do I want?" he asked. "I want a signed confession from you stating exactly what happened and who was all involved."

The man blanched slightly. "And what do you plan on doing with it?"

"Nothing," Julian replied calmly. "Unless you force me to."

"Blackmail," the man growled.

Julian spun towards him. "You tried to destroy a Federation runabout with two Star Fleet officers on board. This is hardly the first time that the Trill Guard has tried to pull something like this. In fact, while you're writing this up, you might as well add a few details about why." Julian leaned forward, resting his hands on the desk top. "And, if I ever hear of you or anyone under your command pulling a stunt like this, that confession will end up in front of the Federation council before you and your people have time to cover your tracks."

The man glared at him and pulled out a PADD and started to write. Julian watched him carefully. Before he could sign it, Julian reached for the PADD. "I'd like to read it, just to make sure." He read the confession and frowned slightly. "You don't mention who ordered this done."

"I ordered it." Julian glanced at him and smiled thinly. "You're lying. Who ordered this attack?" He handed the PADD back. The man glared at him and yanked the PADD out of his hand. He angrily typed a couple words and handed it back. Julian glanced at it and raised an eyebrow. "Thank you. Now sign." The man reluctantly signed the PADD and handed it back. Julian neatly tucked the PADD away. "Thank you for your time," he said cordially and walked out.

*******

I never thought I'd end up blackmailing this world again,' Julian thought, amused. He glanced at Jadzia. Now the only question is do I tell her?'

They arrived at the docking platform and climbed into the runabout. They contacted Captain Sisko before leaving, giving him the coordinates of the damaged runabout. When Sisko asked Julian if he had gotten the answers he wanted, Julian simply nodded and said he'd brief the Captain later. Sisko nodded and signed off.

"Why didn't you tell him now, doctor?" Kira asked as she piloted the ship out.

Julian shrugged. "He has better things to do than listen to the story the Trill guard told me."

"You don't believe them?" Jadzia asked.

Julian shook his head. "Not really. It just seems too convenient."

"You've been spending too much time playing spy in the holosuites, doctor," Kira teased. Julian smiled indulgently.

"Commander," Worf said, staring at Jadzia. "May I have a word with you in private?"

Jadzia glanced up at him and nodded. She caught Julian's eye and he smiled slightly. They headed towards the back. Julian took Jadzia's seat as co-pilot. Kira shot a sideways glance at the doctor. "What Major?"

Kira frowned. "Nothing. For now."

Julian sighed heavily. It was going to be a long trip back.

*******

Worf frowned at Jadzia. She sighed. He had been glaring at her for the past five minutes. "Worf, you wanted to talk to me. Spit it out."

Worf sighed heavily. "I'm just wondering what exactly happened."

Jadzia glanced at him. "We were attacked on the way to Trill, we were forced to crash-land on the planet. You found us three days later."

"That is not what I meant and you know it."

Jadzia sighed. "Nothing happened."

"You could have fooled me," Worf sulked.

"Worf," Jadzia walked over to him. "To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what happened."

Worf stared at her. "Did he take advantage of the situation? If so..."

"No! No. It wasn't his fault. It was mine."

Worf started. "You!?"

Jadzia nodded. "I initiated things."

Worf stood there stunned. "Did you...?"

Jadzia looked him square in they eye. "No."

He sighed. "So, now what?"

Jadzia looked away. "I don't know. I do care about you Worf, but Julian...." She paused. "We've been good friends for five years and I've never been sure where we stood. It's always been a gray area."

Worf nodded thoughtfully. "I understand." Jadzia glanced at him and smiled. "So, where do we go from here?" she asked.

Worf looked up. "I must speak with Doctor Bashir before I decide." Jadzia hesitated, then nodded. "Worf, could you wait till we get back to the station, though?" He glanced at her, confused. "Things are tense enough between the two of you as it is and we still have a ways to go." Worf nodded.

*******

Julian walked off the runabout, glad to get out of there. He could feel Worf's scrupulous gaze on his back the entire trip. He glanced behind him and saw the rest coming out. Kira glanced at the doctor. "Come on, Doctor. You have a debriefing."

Julian raised an eyebrow and nodded. He should have expected Major Kira was going to be there but he had hoped she wouldn't. He turned to Jadzia. "You're off duty for the rest of today." She nodded and he and Kira headed off to Ops.

*******

"So, you're telling me that the symposium was a hoax to lure you and Jadzia to Trill?"

Julian nodded and handed Sisko the PADD he had. "It's all right there. Including who ordered this done."

"The head of the Symbiosis Commission," Sisko growled. He glanced at Bashir. "You're hardly their favorite person anymore doctor."

"I obviously wasn't before this," he replied. Sisko nodded and turned back to the PADD. Kira stood next to Bashir, looking stunned. "How did you manage to identify the ship, doctor?" she asked.

Julian glanced at Sisko and then turned to Kira. "Visual confirmation," he said. "The guard's symbol was on the ship."

"How come Dax didn't see it?"

Julian shrugged. "She was busy trying to get us out of there."

Kira nodded and glanced to Sisko. "So, what do we do?"

"Exactly what the doctor said. Nothing until something like this happens again." He glanced at Bashir. "Does Dax know?"

Julian shook his head. "I plan on telling her later."

Sisko nodded. "Very well. This meeting is classified for now. Only the three of us and Commander Dax are to know what happened. Dismissed." Kira and Julian nodded and left.

"Very tricky, doctor. I take back what I said about you spending too much time playing spy." Kira grinned. "Keep up the good work."

"Thank you, Major," he smiled. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go talk to Dax." Kira nodded and Julian got into the turbolift. He was just stepping out into the habitat ring when he ran into Worf. "Doctor, may I have a word with you?"

Julian sized up the Klingon. Most of the raw hostility was gone, but he had no question what Worf wanted to talk to him about. "Could it be later, Worf? Right now, all I want to do is get some sleep."

Worf considered this for a moment then nodded. "Very well." Julian nodded and headed off. But first, I have to talk to Jadzia,' Julian thought.

*******

Jadzia had just showered and changed into clean clothes when the door chimed. "Come in!" she called. The door slid open to reveal Julian standing there. "Julian," she smiled. "What can I do for you?"

He walked in and glanced around. "We need to talk," he said.

Jadzia felt her smile falter. "What is it?" she asked, sitting on the couch. Julian walked over and sat next to her. He gently took her hands in his. "What I'm about to tell you is classified," he began, not looking at her. "Only Sisko, Kira, you, and myself know about it."

Jadzia felt her eyes widen. "What is it?"

Julian glanced at her. "The ship that attacked us, it was the Trill Guard. I saw the insignia on their hull."

"What? But you said that...."

"I wasn't completely sure when you asked me. But, the more I thought about it, the more confident I was about it. When we got to Trill, I confronted the captain of the guard. He wrote and signed a confession stating what the objective was and who ordered it." He paused and gazed at her. "I'm sorry I lied about not knowing who it was," he whispered. "I wanted to make sure I was correct first."

Jadzia looked away. "Who ordered it?"

Julian gently brushed at her damp hair. "The head of the symbiosis commission." Jadzia pulled away. "They weren't after you," he said. "They wanted me."

Jadzia turned back. "But I suppose it was an added bonus that I was on board." Julian nodded. She sighed and walked back to him. "So, what is Benjamin going to do?"

"Nothing, for now. The confession is simply an insurance that this won't happen again." Jadzia nodded and smiled at him. "Thank you for telling me," she whispered. He smiled sadly and nodded. He gently drew her close and hugged her. She leaned against him. After a moment, Julian asked, "What did you tell Worf?"

Jadzia shifted in his arms so she could lean back against him. "The truth," she said as he wrapped his arms around her waist. "He wants to talk to you before he and I decide what's going to happen."

"Don't I get a say in what happens?" he asked.

She tilted her head to one side so she could look at him. "Of course." She hesitated. "What do you want to happen?"

He paused, studying her features. "Whatever is best for you." She smiled at him and they kissed. After a moment, she pulled back slightly. "You're hopeless, you know that?" He smiled at her and shook his head. She sighed happily and closed her eyes. Julian leaned back against the arm rest on the couch. Within moments, they were asleep.

Chapter 8

"Oh, darling, will you ever change your mind? I've been feeling left behind, like a shadow in your light. Ah honey, won't you say that I'm the one?" -Supertramp "Oh Darling"

Julian walked into the infirmary the next day feeling refreshed. He glanced at the schedule to see what appointments were for today. He was just setting up for the first one when Worf walked in. "Commander," Julian said by way of greeting. "What can I do for you?"

"I would like to continue our discussion," Worf intoned gruffly. Julian paused and then gestured to his office. Worf nodded and walked in.

"If you could keep this brief, Worf, I have an appointment in about ten minutes."

Worf nodded. "I simply want to know what your intentions are towards Jadzia."

Julian paused and then replied, "I'll be blunt, Worf. I care about her a great deal. But, I'm not about to influence what goes on between the two of you. This is *your* decision."

"Yes, but you do have some interest."

"I only want what's best for Jadzia."

Worf frowned at him. "You realize that if Jadzia chooses you over me, I have to right to challenge you."

Julian paused. He hadn't known that. "I'd hope you'd be bigger than that, if it does come to that."

Worf glowered. "It is my right. She is my parmachi."

Julian frowned. "Yes, but it's also her decision. You have my word that I won't try to influence her, if that's what's worrying you." Julian glanced at the chronometer. "Now, if you'll excuse me. I have to get to work." Worf nodded and walked out. Julian stared at the door for a moment and then hit his comm badge."Bashir to Dax."

"Go ahead Julian."

"Jadzia, could you come down here around 1100? That's the first time I have free this morning and I need to ask you a question."

"Of course, Julian. Dax out."

Julian sighed heavily and walked out of his office.

*******

"You wanted to see me Julian?"

He glanced up and saw her standing there. "Yes. Why don't we go into my office." She nodded and they walked in. "I talked with Worf earlier. He mentioned that if you chose me over him, he has the right to challenge me to a fight...I'm assuming to the death, knowing Klingons."

Jadzia paused and nodded her head. "Yes, he does have that right. But I don't think he'd actually do it."

Julian sighed. "Jadzia, I'm not worried about fighting Worf. I can hold my own against him if I want. But that would mean that my secret is out. That, and if I do beat him, I'm not going to kill him."

Jadzia nodded. "What do you need me to do?"

"Convince him not to challenge me," he said. He hesitated. "Either that, or chose him."

He saw Jadzia's face fall and, despite himself, his heart soared. "Julian, I...." She looked away. In that moment, she knew what her decision would be. But, if she couldn't convince Worf....

Julian walked up and gently rested his hands on her shoulders. "Jadzia, I have every confidence in your persuasive abilities," he whispered. She glanced up at him and smiled slightly. He gently ran his fingers over the spots that framed her face. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him.

*******

Jadzia paced her quarters. She had asked Worf to meet her here after his shift. He was late. Suddenly, the door chimed. "Come in!"

Worf entered, looking grave. "I assume you've reached a decision."

Jadzia nodded. "Worf, I do care about you but, right now...." She gestured helplessly. Worf nodded. "I see." He started to walk out. "Worf!" He turned. Jadzia paused. "Are you going to hold to tradition?"

Worf straightened. "It is within my rights."

"Worf, please don't. Just this once, please don't stick to tradition." Worf frowned. "For me?" she asked. She saw him pause and walk back in. "For you," he said gruffly. Jadzia smiled slightly and kissed him on the cheek. "Thank you," she said. He nodded and walked out. Jadzia stared at the door for a long moment.

********

Julian glanced up, startled by the door chime. "Come in!" he called.

Worf entered. Julian stood up slowly. The stood for a long time, studying the other. At long lengths, Worf spoke. "She has chosen you. And I have waived my right to challenge you at her request."

Julian nodded slowly. Worf started to walk out. "Worf." He turned. "Thank you." Worf nodded gruffly and the doors slid shut behind him. Julian gazed at them for a long moment. All he wanted to do right then was to go to Jadzia's quarters but somehow, that seemed wrong. He sat down and had just picked up the PADD he had been reading when the door chimed again. "Come in!" he called, setting the PADD back down. Jadzia walked in. He stood up, surprised. "Jadzia," he said, not quite sure what to say. She simply smiled and walked over to him and kissed him tenderly. Julian closed his eyes and kissed her back. After a moment, they both pulled away. "I take it Worf was here," she murmured. He nodded. She smiled. "Good," she said, pulling him towards his bedroom.

*******

Jadzia smiled at his sleeping form. His dark hair was tussled, an occasional curl falling across his forehead. I can't believe it took me this long,' she mused. She remembered what she had told him in the lift on the Defiant. You came on too strong. I barely had a chance to get to know you.' She smiled slightly. She still barely knew him, it turned out. She tenderly brushed a lock of hair off his forehead. At least I now have the courage to get to know him.' She curled close to him, resting her head against his chest, eventually falling asleep, lulled by the soft beating of his heart.

Epilogue

Julian smiled as he walked along the Promenade. He and Jadzia had been seeing each other for a couple weeks now. Things had been wonderful thus far. Julian nodded at couple acquaintances as he passed them. How many times have I sworn that I'd never marry? That it wasn't for me? And could I possibly be reconsidering that already?' His smile broadened. He walked into Quark's and scanned the area for Jadzia. She said that she would meet him here. Suddenly, the computer chirped, "Incoming message for Doctor Bashir." Julian sighed and said, "Transfer it to my office, computer." The computer chirped an affirmative. Julian headed to his office. "Bashir to Dax."

"Go ahead, Julian."

"Jadzia, I just got a message from someone. I'm going to be a little late."

"Where are you taking the message? I'll just come there."

Julian grinned. "In my office. It was the closest. Had I know that you would have come there, I would have sent it to my quarters."

"Julian," she said, warningly. Julian could pick out the laughter in her voice though. "I'll meet you in your office. Dax out." Julian smiled and walked in. He hit the open channel' button and found himself facing the head of the Trill Symbiosis Commission. Julian straightened.

"Doctor Bashir," the man smiled. "There's something I'd like to talk to you about."

*******

Jadzia walked into Julian's office. "Ready to..what's wrong?" He was staring at the computer, his face ashen, shock written across it. He glanced up at her. "Julian, what's wrong?" She gently took his hands into hers.

Julian took a deep breath. "That was the Symbiosis Commission," he said softly.

"The Commission? What do they want with you?" she asked.

Julian looked up at her. "They know," he said simply.
