SPOILERS!! You have been warned....
The story that inspired it all.....
"Invasion: Time's Enemy" by L.A. Graf is part of the Invasion series put out by Pocket Books in 1996. What's so great about this book? Well, for starters, the characterizations were on the money. It is, by far, one of the most well writen stories out there. Secondly, it was captivating. I literally couldn't put it down. I probably have read it at least half a dozen times since. It simply doesn't get boring.
If it's such a great book...why change things? Well, technically, I haven't changed things. I've simply added on. The normal ending of the book still stands but, being a diehard J/Jer, I wasn't thrilled with the ending. So, I wrote my own. :)
I see....So, how long do you expect this to be? It is the Neverending Story. I don't expect it to end any time soon.
Ok...but I'm lost. I don't understand where *half* of the references are coming from. What exactly happened in the book?
Where to begin....The basic premise is the Defiant is thrown 5000 years back in time due to some sort of temporal vortex with the wormhole. When it is thrown back, they find themselves in a battle and are nearly destroyed. Out of the entire senior staff, only two people' survive: Dr. Bashir and the Dax symbiont (yes, just the symbiont).
The 5000 year old Defiant is discovered in Earth's Oort cloud and Sisko, Dax, and Bashir are brought back to Starbase 1 to verify it's identity. On board they discover that the symbiont it still alive, albeit in stasis. Due to the nature of the threat to the Federation (after all, *something big* had to have happened to throw them back), Commander Dax speaks' to the old symbiont and nearly goes into rejection (yes, this is relevant). They eventually discover that the next time the Defiant goes through the wormhole, it will be thrown back and destroyed.
So...to make a long story short, they go back to DS9, Dax and Bashir smuggling the old symbiont with them. When they arrive at DS9, they find themselves in a rather difficult situation as the Vulcan science ship they had been traveling on went through the fluctuating wormhole. Against his better judgement, Sisko decides to take the Defiant through with a skeleton crew, leaving the Dax symbiont behind. They discover alien life forms (from hence on dubbed Viroids) which assimilate the dna of other species.
Back on DS9, they have discovered that a scout' party of Viroids were sent through and are now plaguing the station. During all of this, one escapes from stasis in the infirmary (I'm not going to tell you how...that would ruin the book) and seriously injurs the Dax symbiont and Dr. Bashir. In this whole meele, they symbiont finds a way to communicate with Bashir and the decision is made to send the symbiont through the wormhole to aid in the fight over there.
To make another long story short, the Dax symbiont is eventually ingested by one of the Viroids....and that's all I'll tell you. Go find out the ending somewhere else. Preferably the book because it's worth the read.
