Five years after leaving DS9
Julian sat in his quarters on the U.S.S. Melbourne relaxing for the first time in months. They were just getting back from an extended excursion into the Gamma Quadrant and he was looking forward to some shore leave. Not just any shore leave,' he amended. Shore leave on DS9.' Julian smiled at the prospect of visiting the old station. He hadn't been back since he accepted promotion to the Melbourne. Lt. Commander and CMO,' he thought. It was a good move, besides the fact that DS9 was being turned over to Bajoran administration.' Still, he had to admit he missed the place, the people, his friends. He got up and walked over to the shelves in his room and picked up a photo of the command crew on their last day there. He had kept in touch with every one of them as best as he could but it wasn't the same.
"Sorel to Bashir."
Julian hit his commbadge. "Bashir here, Sorel."
"You said to let you know when we were approaching the wormhole."
"Oh. Thank you, Lieutenant. Bashir out." Julian disconnected the link and picked up his duffel. He walked out and headed to the observation lounge. He entered just in time to see the wormhole blossom open. Julian smiled and watched the familiar scene. So damn beautiful,' he thought. Fifteen seconds later, they were on the other side of the galaxy. Julian grinned as he saw the station. Ah, home sweet home,' he thought. Julian adjusted the duffel and headed down to the airlock.

"Doctor! It's good to see you!"
Julian grinned. "Nerys! How have you been?" He set down his bag and hugged her.
"Just fine, Doctor." Julian opened his mouth to correct her. "Julian," she amended, smiling. Bashir grinned and picked up his duffel. "It's been a long time, Julian," she said. "How's the Melbourne?"
"It's nice. Different from DS9, but," Julian shrugged, "one gets used to it."
"It sounds like you miss this place," Kira commented as they headed towards his temporary quarters.
"I do," he admitted. "It's funny how this place grows on you."
Kira smiled. "So, what do you plan on doing on your leave?" she asked as they reached his quarters. She hit the door command and the doors slid open.
"Relax," he said glancing around. "It's been a difficult couple of months."
Kira nodded. "Well, everything's exactly where you left it," she said. "If you need anything, don't hesitate to call, though."
Julian grinned. "Thank you, Kira." She nodded and walked out. Julian glanced around the room again and smiled tiredly. He quickly unpacked and headed to the Promenade.

Julian was relaxing at the Replimat when he heard a voice calling his name. Julian turned and saw Captain Gloria Marek striding towards him. Julian smiled and nodded a greeting. "Captain. Join me?"
"I'd love to," she smiled. She sank into the chair across from him. "How did you ever serve here for seven years?"
Julian raised an eyebrow. "Complaints?"
"No! No. It's just, well, I've never been one for Cardassian architecture I guess." Julian laughed. "I have a question. I'm supposed to be meeting our new Chief Science Officer at Quark's."
"And you need to know where Quark's is?" Julian smiled, amused.
Gloria sniffed. "Hardly. How could you miss it?" Julian chuckled again. "I was wondering if you wanted to come with?"
Julian paused and then nodded. "Sure. Might as well see who I'm going to be working with."
"Check and see if the two of you will hit it off or not?"
"Exactly." Both officers laughed and stood up. "Lead the way," he smiled.
The two headed off towards Quark's. Glad to see some things never change,' Julian smiled as they walked in. He glanced around, letting the atmosphere of the place sink in. His eyes flitted over to the corner and broke into a wide grin. He still kept the dart board!' Julian heard the Captain call out, "Commander! Over here!" Julian turned and glanced in the direction. He caught a flash of blue and grey before someone stepped in front of the person. Julian glanced back when he heard Quark's voice. "What will you have, Doctor?"
Julian grinned, his mind filling with nostalgia. "What? No hello?"
Quark looked up. "Hello," he said. "Now, what will you have?"
Julian burst out laughing. "The usual," he smiled.
"Julian?!" a familiar voice broke in. At first, he thought it was the captain, but this one was laced with shock and delighted surprise. He spun and found himself face to face with Jadzia Dax. His jaw dropped. "Dax! What are you doing here?" The two embraced. After a moment, Julian stepped back and held her at arms length. She smiled brilliantly, sapphire eyes flashing. "Meeting with my new commanding officer," she replied, coyly.
Julian's eyes widened with shock. "You mean...."
"I'm the new science officer on the Melbourne." Julian grinned broadly, unable to hide his delight.
"I take it the two of you know each other," Captain Marek broke in.
Julian turned to her and nodded. "We served together here on DS9."
"Oh! Well, then I don't have to introduce the two of you," Marek demured. Julian glanced at her and smiled, realizing she had knownall along that they had served together all along. "Good because I have to meet with the commander of this station."
"Give Kira my regards," Dax spoke up. Marek raised an eyebrow and nodded. Julian chuckled softly as she walked off. Dax turned back to him and smiled. "Gods, it's good to see you."
Julian smiled. "It's good to see you too, Jadzia." They sat down at the bar and Julian picked up his ale. Quark walked over. "Jadzia," he practically drooled. "It has been far too long since you've graced my establishment with you're lovely presence. What can I get you?"
Dax laughed. "Just a synthale." Quark smiled and walked off.
"Glad to see some things haven't changed around here," Jadzia smiled. Julian laughed. "So, how've you been?" she asked.
"Good," he replied, taking another sip of his drink.
Jadzia frowned at him and nodded at Quark as he set her drink down in front of her. "Well," she tried again, "why don't you tell me what kind of mission I've signed up for. I heard you just got back from an extended tour of the Gamma quadrant."
Julian nodded, hesitating. "Well, it's very interesting." He paused, not really sure what to say.
Jadzia frowned. "Julian, what's wrong?" she asked softly.
He sighed. "It's just been a very long couple of months," he explained. "It's good to be back in familiar territory."
Jadzia gazed at him. "Well?" she asked.
Julian glanced at her. "What do you want from me, Dax?" he laughed.
"I haven't seen you in five years. I haven't heard from you in a long time. I want to hear what's been going on and why you look like you've lost your best friend?"
Julian's face fell and he took a long sip of his ale. Jadzia paused. "Maybe we could go somewhere else?" she suggested. Julian glanced at her and nodded. Julian dropped a couple credits on the counter an they walked out. "So, where do you want to go?" he asked.
Jadzia shrugged. "I don't know. Somewhere where you will talk to me." Julian sighed and frowned at her.
"Alright," she sighed. "How about my quarters?" Julian paused and then nodded. They walked off toward the habitat ring in silence. Jadzia paused in front of her room and opened the door. Julian stepped in and looked around. "Make yourself comfortable," she said.
Julian smiled and turned to face her. "So, what do you want to hear?"
"Everything. Start with what we're going to be doing," she smiled and sat down on the couch. Julian sat down across from her.
"Well," he began. "We've mostly been exploring. Now that the Dominion threat has been neutralized, we can really begin to explore deeper into the quadrant. We've had a couple first contact missions. We've been on a couple scientific missions. Basically, we have a very loose charter from Star Fleet whenever we go back. But, I guess our main mission is exploratory." Julian smiled. "I have a feeling you're going to love it."
Dax grinned broadly. "I bet it's good to be back though," she said. Julian nodded. "That it is. Usually we just stop at one of the small bases the Fleet has established in the Gamma Quadrant if we need shore leave. But things have been pretty stressful lately so the captain decided that it would be best for the crew if we were to return to friendlier space."
"Friendlier?" Dax probed.
Julian sighed. "Our last mission before coming back here was a first contact. Several things happened while we were there and things got kind of ugly. Let's just say that they probably won't be allying themselves with the Federation any time soon."
"What happened?"
"Well," Julian took a deep breath. "One of our officers was executed for something we would consider to be a trivial offense. No trial. She was just shot on sight."
Dax's jaw dropped. "What did she do?"
Julian's face darkened. "She interrupted the Captain while she was speaking."
"That's it?!"
Julian nodded. "The Kitunian's consider interrupting or offending a senior member of any community a serious offense, one punishable by death." Julian sighed. "We were in a waiting chamber, about to see the minister of their world and the captain was speaking and Leirna, uh, Cmdr. Tarol broke in with a suggestion. One of the guards pulled out his phaser and shot her."
"Oh my god," Dax murmured. "What did she do on the Melbourne?"
"She was the Chief Science Officer."
Dax's jaw dropped. "You mean *I'm* her *replacement*?" Julian nodded. She shook her head shocked. She glanced at Julian. "How well did you know her?" she asked quietly.
"We were friends," he replied.
"Just .....?"
"*Just* friends." Dax shook her head. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry or anything."
"No, it's alright." Julian smiled slightly. "So, what have you been up to?"
Jadzia smiled. "The usual."
Julian sighed in frustration. "You give me the third degree and then you won't even answer my questions," he griped teasingly.
Jadzia laughed. "I'd say it's fair turnabout," she teased. Julian laughed. "Actually, there isn't much to tell. A lot of research. Nothing really spectacular." She smiled. "I guess that's why I signed up for the Melbourne."
"You missed frontier research," he teased. Jadzia shook her head. "I guess you could say that." She reached for his hand and gave it a friendly squeeze. "I've missed you," she smiled.
Julian smiled in response. "I've missed you too Dax. It'll be great to work together again." Jadzia smiled and nodded.
Later that evening, after Julian had left, Dax was sitting at the window staring out into space. She smiled as the wormhole opened to let a ship pass through. Her thoughts turned toward her next assignment. Star Fleet had given a glowing briefing about how the Melbourne and her crew were among the best in the Fleet, how they had been decorated several times for their efforts and how several planets in the Gamma Quadrant were considering applying for Federation membership due to their efforts. She had signed on because it presented an excellent opportunity for her. Exploring the Gamma Quadrant. She hadn't had that opportunity since being posted on DS9.
She sighed. She hadn't even checked the ships manifest to see who was on staff. She knew Julian had accepted a posting to it after leaving the station but she didn't know he was still there. They had kept in constant contact immediately after receiving their new postings but they hadn't talked in a long time, at least not over subspace. They occasionally sent letters but neither had mentioned anything about their assignments. Jadzia had assumed he had moved on to another posting. And she had lost contact with him after a while. When she saw him standing at the bar talking with Quark, it had brought back a flood of memories. She smiled and got up. She had missed this place, her old co-workers and friends. At least you can have a bit of that comraderie again,' she thought as she got ready for bed.

Julian sat at the Replimat the next morning, enjoying a quiet breakfast. It was still early but the Promenade was as busy as ever. He smiled and let his mind wander until a familiar voice broke through his thoughts. Julian glanced up and smiled. "Odo. Have a seat."
Odo sat down. "Hello, Doctor."
Julian smiled. "How've you been Odo?"
"Fine," Odo replied. "How has your posting to the Melbourne turned out?"
Julian shrugged. "I can't complain. I miss this place though," he admitted. Odo snorted. "No, seriously. I know it seems strange but after seven years here, this place became my home." He glanced around. "It seems like things haven't changed a bit."
"They haven't," Odo replied. Julian paused. Trying to hold a friendly conversation with Odo had always been like pulling teeth for him. Odo stood up. "I should be going. I'm on duty. I simply stopped to say hello."
Julian smiled. "It's good to see you again Odo."
Odo nodded and walked off. Julian smiled and turned back to his breakfast. "Can I join you?" Julian glanced up again and smiled.
"Of course Jadzia." She sat down and smiled. "How'd you sleep?" Julian asked.
"Just fine," she smiled, a part of her half expecting him to hit on her. He simply smiled and took a sip of his coffee. "So," she said. "What are you planning on doing on your leave?"
Julian shrugged. "I really haven't decided yet. Most of the crew mentioned cleaning Quark out at the Dabo wheels."
Jadzia chuckled. "Did you tell them about him?"
Julian grinned. "I didn't have to. You have to meet these people. They aren't your typical Star Fleet crew."
Jadzia raised an eyebrow. "So why don't you introduce me?" she asked.
"Cause no one's here," he smiled. She swatted him. Julian chuckled. They ate in silence for a while. Julian scanned the Promenade again. "Who're you looking for?" she asked.
"Gloria, er, the captain," Julian replied.
Dax's eyebrows shot up. " Gloria'?" she asked.
Julian glanced at her. "Dax!" he protested. "She's an old friend of my mother's. They went to school together."
Dax flushed. "Oh."
Julian stared at her. "I can't believe you thought...." He shook his head. "She's at least twice my age."
Jadzia grinned. "Well, I'm over eight times your age and that never stopped you," she teased.
"Jadzia." He frowned. She laughed. He glanced back out and spotted someone. He raised his hand in a greeting. Jadzia turned to see who was heading over. A young man, about 28, was trotting over. "Hello Liam," Julian said as he reached their table.
"Julian," he smiled. "How's your leave been so far?"
Julian smiled. "All 12 hours of it have been fine. You cleaned Quark out yet?"
"No not yet." Liam turned and smiled at Jadzia. "Hello. I'm Liam Michaels."
"Jadzia Dax," she smiled, extending her hand. Liam smiled and shook it. He turned to Julian. "You certainly move quickly."
Julian flushed. "Dax and I served together here on DS9. We're old friends."
"Oops," Liam laughed. "I'm sorry."
Jadzia smiled and shook her head. "No harm done."
"So what are you doing here? Vacation?"
Jadzia shook her head. "No. I'm the new science officer on the Melbourne."
Liam's eyes widened. "Oh." He turned and glanced at Julian. "Does she know...?" Julian nodded. "I'm sorry," Liam apologized again. "It's just that a lot of people are still upset about what happened. You'll probably be referred to as Leirna's replacement for a while."
Jadzia smiled thinly and nodded. "I assumed as much," she admitted.
Liam nodded. "Well, if you'll excuse me, I can hear the Dabo wheels calling my name." He smiled. "I'll see you later Julian. It was nice to meet you Dax." He nodded goodbye and walked off.
Jadzia turned to Julian. He was staring off into space. "Julian?" He started and faced her. "You alright?" she asked, concerned.
He nodded. "I'm fine. Well, I have no idea where she is. What do you say we go for a walk?" Jadzia smiled and nodded. They started off, pausing at a couple new shops and stopping to talk to a couple familiar faces. Jadzia kept sneaking glances at Julian. He seemed preoccupied with something.
"Penny for your thoughts," she smiled.
Julian turned and smiled. "I was just debating whether to take a day and head to Bajor."
Jadzia smiled. "That would be nice," she admitted. "If you go, mind if I join you?"
"Of course not," he smiled. He glanced in Quark's and saw Liam and a couple other officers at the Dabo wheels. Julian smiled. Dax followed his gaze.
"Why don't we go in?" she suggested. Julian shrugged. They walked in and sank down at one of the tables. Quark walked over.
"Doctor, why don't you go talk to your shipmates over there and persuade them to leave the Dabo tables for a while, huh?"
"They beating you out, Quark?" Julian grinned. Quark sniffed and took their orders. Julian smiled and turned back to Jadzia. She was shaking her head. "What?"
"Nothing," she said. She glanced over his shoulder. "We have company," she said.
Julian turned and saw Meleria and Arnwar heading over. Meleria smiled. "Hello, Julian. Didn't expect to see you up so early. Have you come to help clean the little Ferengi out?"
Julian chuckled and shook his head. "Sorry, Meleria. I'm really not in the mood." He felt Dax nudge his boot with hers. "Uh, Meleria, Arnwar, this is Commander Jadzia Dax, the new science officer. Dax, this is Commander Meleria Braen, the Melbourne's first officer, and Lt. Commander Arnwar B'Ler, Chief of Security."
Arnwar smiled. "Hello," he smiled. Jadzia returned it in kind. Meleria smiled sadly. Dax immediately understood why. "Well," Dax said, trying to shift the subject, "how close are you to cleaning Quark out?"
Meleria brightened a bit. "Oh, he won't have a leg to stand on by the time the week is out."
"Go easy on him Mel," Julian smiled. "He's an old, well, maybe friend is too strong a word." Dax elbowed him. "What?" he protested. She just laughed and stood up. "Well, I don't know about you, but I'm in the mood to gamble for a while. Julian?"
He shook his head, smiling. "No, thanks. I'll just watch." The four headed over to the table and joined up with the others. Julian introduced Jadzia to the rest command staff and watched as she leaned in to place her bet. The Dabo girl spun the wheel and .... "Dabo!" she called. The rest of the command crew turned to Dax, who just smiled and collected her winnings. Julian grinned. "You still haven't lost your touch, have you?" Jadzia grinned at him and shook her head.
*******
"This is quite a station. I can see why you liked it here," Gloria Marek commented.
Julian smiled and shook his head. "Yesterday you were saying the exact opposite," he pointed out.
"Well, I can see some of the allure. It's a busy place. You must have seen a lot of action here. That's not something you get on a starship. I can see why you miss it." She smiled at the younger man. She had known him since he was a little boy. It was a delight to see how he had grown.
Julian smiled wistfully. "Is it that obvious? Even after five years?"
She smiled. "At first, everyone could tell. Since then, I'd say only the people closest to you can really tell. Me, Liam, Leirna...." Julian sighed. Gloria smiled sadly. "You really miss her, don't you?"
Julian hesitated, briefly wondering who she was talking about. "She was a good friend," he replied.
Gloria nodded. "That she was." She took a sip of her drink. "So, tell me about our new science officer. What's she like?"
Julian took a deep breath. "Well," he said, letting it out. "Frankly, she's brilliant. An incredible scientist. I'd hate to see where this station would be without her being here those first few years."
Gloria shook her head. "I know all that, Julian. I mean personality wise. You seem to know her very well."
Julian nodded. "We were good friends."
"Were?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, we sort of lost touch awhile back." Julian shrugged. "I still consider her one of my best friends but..."
"I understand. A lot has happened between then and now." Julian smiled thinly. "Speaking of changes...."
"Hello!" Dax walked over. "I hope I'm not interrupting."
"Not at all," Gloria smiled. "Have a seat."
Dax smiled and sat down. "So what were you talking about?"
"You," Julian smiled, taking a sip.
"Oh! Well, don't let me interrupt," she smiled. Julian chuckled and shook his head.
Gloria appraised the two. She prided herself on her ability to read people and she could tell there was a lot of unresolved subject matter between the two of them. "Actually," she spoke up. "I've got to be going. Doctor, why don't you give Dax a tour of the Melbourne." Julian's head snapped up.
Dax smiled. "That sounds wonderful," she glanced at Julian. "If you don't mind."
"Of course not," he said, smiling slightly. They stood up and headed towards the docking ring.
******* Jadzia gazed around the science lab. "This is *mine*?" she gasped. "It's huge!"
"Well, exploration is our primary mission." Julian smiled. "We wouldn't be much of an exploratory ship if we didn't have a state of the art science lab."
Jadzia ran her hands over a console. "This is better than what I had on the Nile!" Julian grinned at his friend's enthusiasm. "So, what's left?"
"Nothing," Julian smiled. "I thought I'd save the best for last."
"What are crew quarters like?" Jadzia glanced at him.
Julian paused and sighed. "Come on," he said.
Jadzia smiled and followed him. They walked through the halls and up two levels until they reached a set of doors. Julian punched in the command and the doors slid open. Dax walked in and looked around. She was standing in a spacious living area. These look a little big for single quarters,' she thought. She glanced at Julian. "So," she said. "Is this what typical quarters look like?" She walked over to a shelf and picked up a photo. She smiled as she recognized it. "I have this in my quarters also," she admitted. Julian smiled and walked over. Jadzia's gaze wandered over the other items and various photos. One caught her eye and she picked it up. Her eyes widened. "Julian," she whispered. "Who...?"
Julian paused. "That's my wife and daughter," he said quietly.
Dax turned and faced him. There was a sadness in his eyes that she recognized. He swallowed and turned around. "Julian," she gaped and then grinned. "Why didn't you tell me you were married?"
Julian sighed. "I had planned on telling you but circumstances prevented it. And then...." She heard his voice catch.
Dax approached cautiously. "Julian? What is it?"
Julian swallowed and shook his head. "Lara, my wife, was killed about two years ago."
Dax's jaw dropped. "Oh, gods. Julian, I-I'm sorry. I...."
Julian turned and smiled weakly. "It's alright. You didn't know." He met her gaze and she smiled sadly. She glanced at the photo. "So, how old is your little girl?" she asked walking back and setting it on the shelf.
"Almost three," he said, allowing himself a brief smile.
"Julian, if you don't mind me asking, where...?"
"Is she?" he finished. Dax smiled and nodded. "With some friends of Lara's. They'll be here tomorrow." Jadzia nodded. She was still shocked. Julian smiled. "I know this is a surprise. I guess it's better I told you now than show up with Cati tomorrow."
Dax smiled and nodded. "So...."
Julian glanced at the chrono. "Are you hungry? It's almost lunch."
Dax paused and nodded, smiling. "Sure. My treat." Julian smiled and they walked out.
*******
"Papa!" Julian grinned and swept the little girl up in his arms. "Hello Catilynn," he smiled. He turned to the couple walking out. "Thanks again Sera, Jarrell. I appreciate it."
"Oh, it was no problem. She was an absolute angel," Sera smiled.
Julian grinned and glanced over his shoulder. "Oh! Sera, Jarrell, this is Jadzia Dax, an old friend of mine. Dax, this is Sera and Jarrell Adaris." Dax smiled and shook their hands. Cati started squirming. "Let me down, Papa!"
Julian smiled and set her down on the ground and she stared up at Dax with wide blue eyes. Dax smiled at the little girl. "Hello," she said, crouching down. Cati smiled back. "Hi," she said.
"Well," Jarrell broke in. "We should be on our way."
"Of course," Julian smiled, turning back. "Thank you again."
"It was no problem. Goodbye Cati."
"Bye!" she called. The couple walked off. "Alright, munchkin. Let's get you settled in," Julian said, scooping her up. Cati giggled happily. Julian glanced at Dax who smiled at him. He smiled in return and they headed off.
Dax studied him as they walked. Cati was chattering to him about her stay and he was listening patiently. This is very, well, strange. He was such the consummate bachelor on DS9. Now I find out he's widowed and has a child.' They arrived at his quarters and Julian shifted Cati to one hip and punched in the door command. The doors slid open and Julian gestured for Jadzia to enter. She smiled distractedly and walked in. Julian stepped in behind her and set Cati down, who immediately ran off to explore the rooms. "What's on your mind Jadzia?" he asked, sinking down on the couch.
Dax smiled and sat down next to him. "I was just thinking how much you've changed in five years," she admitted. Julian glanced in her direction and smiled. He was about to respond when Cati climbed up onto his lap. Julian glanced at her and smiled, gently hugging her. Dax smiled. "This suits you," she said softly. Julian glanced up, startled. She felt a hint of a blush creep into her cheeks but she was saved Cati. "What's your name?" she asked.
Jadzia's attention focused on the little girl. "Jadzia," she smiled. Cati studied her with curiosity. Dax smiled realizing why she was so curious. She glanced at Julian and saw him stifling his laughter. "I'm a Trill," Dax said, supplying the little girl with the answer to her unasked question. Cati smiled happily. Julian chuckled and shook his head.
"She's been told it's impolite to ask people what they are," he explained. "Repeatedly." Jadzia laughed. Cati frowned slightly.
"What?" she asked.
Julian smiled tenderly. "Nothing love. Why don't you go play for awhile and we'll get dinner later."
Cati smiled and scrambled down. "Okay Papa."
Dax smiled, watching the little girl disappear into one of the bedrooms. "Papa?" she asked, smiling.
Julian flushed slightly. "She never called me daddy, even as a baby. It stuck after a while."
Dax giggled. "So," she said, turning to face him. "What are your plans for your leave. You only have four days left."
"So do you," he pointed out, smiling. She smiled and glanced down at the couch. "What?" he asked, gently taking her hand and giving it a friendly squeeze.
Dax glanced up and smiled. "It's nothing."
"Dax, you're getting worse at hiding your emotions as the years go on. What's wrong?"
She hesitated and then sighed. "I suppose you'd rather I not tag along then. I mean, I'm sure you want to spend some time with Cati.."
Julian smiled. "Actually, I wouldn't mind at all." Dax glanced at him, her confusion showing. "I know that the rest of the crew is somewhat uncomfortable with you being Leirna's replacement. I'd rather you didn't spend the rest of your shore leave alone."
"Who said I'd be alone?" Dax asked, indignantly. "Kira and Odo..."
"Are incredibly busy right now, what with Bajor considering applying for Federation membership. That's why the captain had to meet with Kira the other day, to discuss what was going on." Julian smiled. "Besides," he added. "I've missed you. I'd like to hear what's been going on with you. You neatly dodged my questions the other night."
Dax glanced at the door to Cati's room. "Not nearly as much as what's been going on with you."
Julian smiled and shook his head. "I was planning on heading to Bajor tomorrow. You're more than welcome to come along." Dax paused and then smiled. "Alright."
"Good," Julian smiled. "Now, why don't we get some dinner?" Dax smiled and nodded.
*******
Julian sighed and sank down on the bed. It had been a long day and he was exhausted. It had taken a full hour to get Cati calmed down enough to go to bed. Julian shifted and winced. His shoulder was killing him. I'll take a sonic shower tomorrow morning.' Julian sighed and closed his eyes, his thoughts drifting back to yesterday. He had been stunned when Dax had suggested checking out the crew quarters on the Melbourne. It almost sounded like something *I* would have said all those years ago!' Julian grinned. He also remembered how she had reacted when she saw the photo of him, Lara, and Cati. He had wanted to tell her when it happened but they couldn't contact the Alpha Quadrant. They were too deep into uncharted territory. Julian sighed and felt the familiar sadness fill him. Uncharted territory,' he thought. You loved exploring as much as she does, Lara. As much as Leirna did. I'm beginning to wonder it's's worth it.' Julian shifted onto his side and stared at the grey wall. It still hurt as much as it did two years ago. Julian closed his eyes tight. At least you have Cati,' he told himself. Julian smiled slightly. She had been the one ray of light since Lara's death. It had been difficult trying to raise her alone. Leirna had helped. She and Lara had been friends, Leirna had worked under her until Lara had been killed. Afterwards, Leirna offered to help him out with things. And now, Leirna had been killed. Julian shook his head. 'That's in the past. Live in the present. You have a good job, a wonderful daughter, friends. You should be counting your blessings.'
Julian heard a soft shuffling sound and sat up. Cati was standing at the door way. "Cati? What's wrong?"
"I can't sleep," she sniffed. Julian smiled and motioned for her to come over. She walked over and Julian scooped her up. "Alright. You can sleep in here tonight. Just don't make a habit out of this," he whispered. Cati sniffled and nodded. Julian gently smoothed her hair off her forehead and kissed her goodnight before lying back down. He felt her curl up next to him and he smiled.
*******
Dax sat in her quarters, staring out the window. She was still reeling from the past two days. 'He's still the same old Julian but at the same time he's not. Gods! He's been married had a child and lost his wife. By all the joined gods, of course he's not the same.' She sighed and shook her head. 'What were you thinking?' she chided herself.
'I didn't know about any of that! How could I have? Besides, who's to say he still doesn't feel the same way?'
'Maybe he does, but do you honestly think he'll act on those feelings? It's not just him anymore. He has a child to take care of. And he only lost his wife two years ago!'
Dax shut her eyes tight, trying to blot out the inner turmoil. She had missed him so much in the last five years. More than she had expected. When she had seen him, she had thought that they could pick up where they left off. Or maybe start over. Now? Now she wasn't sure.
*******
Julian woke early the next morning and quietly got ready so he wouldn't wake Cati. He headed into the main room and tapped the commpanel. "Bashir to Dax," he said softly. There was a long pause before she answered. "Dax here." Julian heard her clear her throat and he smiled. "Did I wake you?"
"Yes," she said. "What time is it?"
"Oh-seven hundred." He heard her sigh softly. "Alright," she murmured. "I'm up. When do we meet?"
"Oh-eight hundred. Airlock three."
"Alright. I'll see you then. Dax out." Julian cut the connection and went to wake Cati up.
"Kira to Bashir." Julian's brows flew up. "Bashir here. What can I do for you Major?"
"The *Orinoco* is at your disposal for the day, Doctor."
Julian started. "Major? Did I hear you right?" He knew the Federation had left a few runabouts here as a token of goodwill but he didn't expect her to offer the use of one.
"Yes, Doctor. Enjoy your day."
"Thank you, Major. Bashir out." Julian cut the connection, smiling. Well, I'll be damned.' "Bashir to Dax."
"Go ahead Julian."
"There's been a change of plans...."
*******
Dax walked into the runabout staging area and smiled. "Hello," she called.
Julian turned and smiled. "Hello Dax."
"Lo Dax!" Cati cheerfully echoed. Dax grinned and glanced at Julian. He smiled back at her. "All set?" he asked. She nodded and they stepped in. Dax hit the command and the doors closed. She headed up front and smiled.
"Gods this brings back memories," she murmured. Julian chuckled and set Cati down in one of the chairs. "Don't touch anything," he warned as he strapped her in. Jadzia seated herself at the pilot's seat and brought the runabout online. "Starting prelaunch sequence," she said as Julian sat down next to her. He nodded and contacted Ops to request departure.
"Granted. See you tomorrow. Ops out." Dax neatly piloted the runabout away from the station. "Setting in a course for Bajor. Full impulse." She tapped a few controls and then put the runabout on autopilot. "That should do it. Now we have a three hour wait." Julian smiled and nodded. He turned and glanced at Cati.
"Want to get up and move around?" he asked. She nodded and Julian released the harness and she scrambled down. Julian smiled and sank down on the couch in the front. "So," he smiled at Dax as Cati explored the cockpit, "What should we do on Bajor?"
Dax smiled and swiveled the seat around. "Well, we could go to the capitol. There's always plenty to do there."
Julian nodded and glanced at Cati as she walked towards the main control. "Cati," he said warningly. She turned and glanced at him. He shook his head and she sighed. Dax smiled softly and stood.
"Well," she said walking over to the replicator. "Raktagino," she ordered. "We could also visit some of the outlying areas. You know, stop in the capitol and pick up some necessities and spend the day wandering the countryside. I'm sure we could even get some, what are they called, Verdanis?" Julian nodded. "But I don't know if we could do that," she admitted, glancing at Cati.
Julian smiled. "Probably not," he admitted. "I do like the idea of spending the day outside of the city. Stop in the capitol and get some supplies, tent and what not if we don't want to sleep in the runabout. What do you say, Cati? Want to go camping?"
"Yeah!" she cried happily. Dax smiled. "Well, that settles it," she said.
*******
Dax stepped out of the runabout and took a deep breath of air. "Hmmm. Much better," she smiled. She turned to Julian and Cati. Cati was squirming to get down. Julian set her down and she ran off. Julian smiled and shook his head. They stepped out and looked around. "This is wonderful," Dax murmured. They had set down in a large meadow. Nearby was a lake. She grinned. "Makes me glad we stopped in the capitol and asked the shop owner. I didn't bring a swimsuit."
"Good for him, too. How many credits did we spend there?" Dax laughed. Cati was crouching down next to the lake. "Cati! Get back from there!" he called, starting over. Dax followed.
Cati stood up and ran back. "Can we go swimming?"
Julian smiled. "Later. Let's have lunch first." Cati nodded.
Dax glanced at him. "I'll go back and get some food and a blanket," she suggested. Julian smiled at her and nodded. Dax trotted back to the runabout. She came back with a collection of sandwiches, drinks and a blanket. Julian smiled and helped her set up. They enjoyed a leisurely lunch next to the lake. After lunch, Cati fell asleep on the blanket, forgetting about going swimming.
Julian smiled and leaned back. "Too much excitement in one day," he said, glancing at Jadzia. She smiled and stretched out. "Actually, it doesn't sound like such a bad idea. This sun feels wonderful." She wrapped her arms under head and closed her eyes.
Julian smiled and gazed around the area. He couldn't remember the last time he had been this relaxed. Far too long,' he thought wistfully. He glanced at Dax and smiled. He had missed her over the years. He regretted losing contact with her. Dax opened her eyes and smiled at him.
"What?" she asked.
"Nothing," he replied. "Just thinking."
Dax smiled and propped herself up on her elbow and glanced past him at the lake. "Want to go swimming?" she asked.
Julian glanced over his shoulder at the clear water and shrugged. "Sure, why not." They had changed into their new swimsuits while on the runabout. Dax sat up and quickly slipped out her clothes. She neatly folded her civvies and smiled at him as she stood up. He was shrugging his shirt off. "Come on," she grinned. Julian glanced up at her and smiled. He stood up and grinned.
"Last one in..." he began and Dax took off. "Hey!" he gasped and took off after her. Dax beat him to the lake and neatly dove in. Julian shook his head and skidded to a stop next to the lake. She surfaced, shock written across her face. "Cold?" he teased.
She glanced at him and frowned. "Find out for yourself." She splashed him and he hopped back. He shook his head.
"You're hopeless," he teased.
Dax smiled. "Come in. You get used to it."
Julian smiled and glanced back towards the blanket. Cati was sleeping soundly. He had hoped that their shouting hadn't woken her. "Alright," he said, turning back. He dove in and surfaced, his teeth chattering. "Good lord," he gasped. "Maybe Trills can get used to this but I highly doubt humans can."
"Come over here," she said grinning.
"Why?" he asked warily, swimming towards her. He could feel the water warming as he went. "A hot spring," he smiled. Dax nodded. "The whole south end of the lake should be fine." Julian smiled and shifted so he was floating on his back. "I could get used to this," he smiled.
"Shame you won't be able to," Dax grinned and playfully dunked him. Julian broke the surface coughing. "No fair," he protested laughing. Dax grinned and swam away before he could get at her. She glanced back and paused. She didn't see him. She spun back around and frowned. She suddenly felt a vise like grip on her ankle and gasped and he tugged her under. She laughed as she surfaced. "Alright, we're even now," she grinned. Julian smiled and nodded. Dax smiled and swam over. The quiet, pensive look was gone from his eyes and replaced with the familiar sparkle. 'Gods, what I wouldn't give to kiss him right now.'
Julian smiled and swam back a bit, keeping out of arms length, just in case. He wasn't entirely convinced their little war was over. He glanced back briefly at the blanket. Still sleeping. He turned back and saw Jadzia treading water a few inches from him. Julian smiled at her and caught sight of the glint in her eyes. Her arms slid around his waist and she gently kissed him. Julian froze, startled. He could feel his mind racing. After a moment, she pulled back. Julian backed up, startled and confused. "Jadzia," he began.
She paused and sighed. "No, don't. I understand." She swam back a bit. She could feel her cheeks begin to heat up so she slid under the water with the pretense to smooth her hair back. 'What was I thinking? Wait, thinking? I wasn't!' She resurfaced and found herself face to face with him. She backed, startled. Julian reached and grabbed her hand. "Actually, I don't know if you do understand," he said quietly.
Dax shook her head. "Julian, let's just drop this for now. Please?" Julian hesitated and then nodded. "Alright." He heard Cati begin to cry and glanced over Dax's shoulder. She was sitting up looking disoriented. Dax turned and smiled. They both swam to the shallows of the lake and Julian got out. "Over here love." Cati turned and smiled. "Can we go swimming?" she asked, excitedly.
"Of course," Julian smiled and picked her up. "Come on." They walked back and Julian walked in.
"How well does she swim?" Dax asked.
"Like a fish," Julian grinned. He waded out to her side. Cati grinned delightedly and splashed him. "Hey!" he protested smiling. Cati giggled and began to squirm out of his grip. "Alright. Be careful though." He gently released her but stayed close. Cati grinned at Dax and swam over. Dax grinned and caught the little girl when she got close enough.
"Hey, you're pretty good." Cati grinned proudly. Julian swam up to them, smiling. Dax glanced over Cati and smiled at him as he swam up. She knew he wanted to talk about what happened but she wasn't sure she wanted to. They swam for a bit longer and then decided to get out. Dax toweled off as Julian dried Cati. Dax smiled at the sight. He was still dripping wet and had completely draped her under the large towel. Cati was laughing hysterically. Dax watched as he lifted the towel up and wrapped her in it. Cati smiled at him and gently pat his cheeks. Julian glanced up and saw Dax smiling at them. He smiled back and stood up and walked over. He set Cati down on the blanket and she engaged herself in one of the toys Julian had brought along. Julian sat down next to her and began to play with her. Dax considered joining in but decided to watch for a while. She stretched out on the blanket and gazed at them. After a moment, Julian turned and saw her watching them. He glanced back at Cati and mussed her hair and stretched out along the blanket facing Dax.
"What?" he asked smiling.
"Nothing," she replied. He glanced back at Cati and turned back to Dax.
"Jadzia," he said softly. "We need to talk."
Dax shook her head. "No. I'm sorry. I..."
Julian reached and gently put two fingers on her lips to quiet her. "Jadzia, you don't have to apologize." He smiled and shook his head. "I'll be honest. I haven't dated anyone since Lara died. And I'm not completely sure I'm ready to. At least, I haven't really considered it."
She gazed at him. "I understand Julian. I guess...Oh, I don't know. I do care about you. I guess I just want you to know that I'll wait." She saw him smile and he nodded. Jadzia caught movement out of the corner of her eye and heard Julian grunt softly as Cati landed square on his back. "Catilynn!" he protested. She giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Hi Papa!"
Julian chuckled and glanced at Jadzia. She was laughing. "Hello Cati. What do you want?" he asked.
"I want you to play with me!" she giggled, getting off his back. Julian smiled and rolled onto his back. Cati promptly leaped on him and began to tickle him. Julian winced slightly, laughing. He reached to pick her up but Dax pinned his shoulders. "No fair!" he protested, grinning.
"Sure it is," she smiled. "Get 'im Cati!" Julian laughed and tried to pull away. After several minutes, he managed to flip Dax on her back. She gasped with laughter and tried to pull back as Cati started to tickle her. "Turncoat!" she giggled at Cati who just grinned. After a moment, Julian smiled. "Alright. Calm down Cati." Cati giggled happily and turned back to her toys. Julian turned back to Dax and smiled. She was still laughing softly. She met his gaze and smiled softly. She realized he was still gently pinning her to the ground and paused, her eyes searching his. Julian released one of her shoulders and gently brushed her cheek with his hand. She felt her cheeks heat up and he smiled. Julian helped her sit up and she smiled. She felt him wrap an arm around her shoulders and she leaned against him. They watched Cati play for a moment and they glanced at each other. Dax felt a smile creep onto her face at the look on his. Julian tipped his head towards Cati and Dax nodded. They both reached over and began to tickle her. Cati shrieked with laughter. After a moment they stopped. Julian picked her up and rolled onto his back, lifting her into the air. "That's what you get," he grinned. Cati giggled happily and Julian sat her down on his stomach. Dax stretched out on her stomach facing them. Julian glanced at her and smiled. After a while, they packed up and went back to the runabout to have dinner. After dinner, Julian put Cati down for bed. He walked outside and found Dax stretched out of the blanket gazing up at the stars. Julian smiled and sat down next to her.
She glanced at him and smiled. "Hello," she said. "Cati's asleep?"
Julian nodded and stretched out next to her. "It's so beautiful here," she whispered.
Julian glanced at her and smiled. "That it is." She gazed at him, smiling, and shifted onto her side.
"About what we were talking about earlier," she said softly, her blue eyes searching his. Julian nodded, waiting for her to go on. "You mentioned that you hadn't thought about dating anyone after your wife died." Dax paused. "Are you thinking about it now?"
Julian gazed at her. "Yes," he said softly, gently brushing her cheek with his hand. He felt her lean into his touch and he hesitated before pulling her close. He gently pressed his lips to hers, feeling her arms wrap gently around him. She didn't press and he was grateful for that. After a long moment he pulled back. He felt like he was being torn in two. Part of him would love to lose himself in her arms, the part of him that had always cared for her. All those years on DS9, he would have given anything for this to happen. But it hadn't. Things had changed. He had met Lara and fallen head over heels in love. They had a child. He still found himself waking in the middle of the night from the nightmares he has had since her death. Part of him wanted this but the rest of him wasn't sure.
Dax gazed at him, watching the conflicting emotions playing over his face. She gently brushed his cheek and sank down next to him. No need to push things. We have time.' She closed her eyes and listened to his soft breathing. She felt his arm slide around her and she smiled. They both gazed up at the stars for hours, talking quietly or just staring. After a long pause in the conversation, Jadzia glanced at him and realized he was sound asleep. She smiled and reached over and drew the blanket over the both of them. I'll wake him in a bit,' she thought. She curled close to him, enjoying the warmth and the contact. Eventually she fell asleep.
*******
Julian snapped up, gasping. Jadzia stirred next to him. "Oh, I must have drifted off," she murmured. "Julian? What's wrong?"
"Nothing," he murmured, shaking his head. He glanced around. It was pitch black out, the moons having disappeared. He glanced at her and saw her concerned glance. "I'm fine," he said softly. "Why don't we go in?" She nodded and they stood up. He picked the blanket up and they walked back into the runabout. Julian tapped the controls and shut the back door. He turned to Jadzia and smiled softly. "Goodnight Dax," he whispered.
"Goodnight." He bent and gently kissed her. She smiled and brushed at his cheek with her hand. She felt him smile and he kissed the palm of her hand and disappeared into one of the cabins. Dax stood there for a long time before heading into her cabin.
*******
Jadzia woke to find a pressure on the center of her back. "What the he---"
"Morning!" Cati cried. Dax opened one eye and turned her head to get a better look. Cati was sitting on her back smiling. "Cati," she sighed and smiled. "Is your dad up?"
"She gave me the same greeting five seconds ago. Nice try," came a voice. Julian walked in smiling. "Morning."
Dax smiled at him and glanced at Cati. "How about getting off my back so I can get up?" Cati scrambled down and darted out of the room, heading towards the front.
"I suppose she's hungry," Julian said, glancing after her.
"Hmm," Dax murmured letting her gaze travel down his lean frame and back up. He had neglected to put on a top and only had on a pair of cotton sweats. Julian turned back and flushed slightly at her appreciative smile. "Come on," Dax said, getting up. "The natives are hungry." Julian smiled and they walked up front. Julian replicated breakfast and glanced at Jadzia.
"What time are we due back at the station?"
"Ten-hundred."
"Hmm. It's oh-six hundred now," Julian glanced at Cati and frowned slightly. "We have some time, thanks to our little alarm clock." Cati giggled and took another bit of her pancakes. Julian smiled tenderly at his daughter. "So, do we just want to head back or..."
"We could go back to the city and spend some time there," Dax suggested.
Julian nodded and turned to Cati. "Well, kiddo? Do you want to go back?" He knew what the answer would be.
"No!" she cried, her lower lip jutting out. Jadzia smiled.
"Alright," Julian said. "We'll stay a bit longer. Do you want to visit the city?" Cati nodded happily and returned to her breakfast.
"Nice trick," Jadzia commented softly.
Julian chuckled. "She hates leaving any place. You have to make it seem like she's getting her way once in a while or we'd have a scene every time." Jadzia grinned at him and tucked her long legs underneath her, turning back to her breakfast for a bit.
Julian studied her for a moment, thinking about yesterday. I'll wait,' she had said. He smiled and leaned back in his chair. He had spent a lot of last night thinking about what he was going to do. He cared very much for her but he couldn't help like he was betraying Lara. Dax glanced up at him and caught his gaze. Julian paused and glanced at Cati. "Are you done love?" Cati smiled and nodded. Julian smiled in response and took her plate. "Go get washed up," he said. She scampered to the back. Julian put her plate in the replicator and hit a couple buttons and the dishes disappeared. He turned back to Jadzia and hesitated and sat down on the couch. "Jadzia," he said softly. "I've been doing a lot of thinking." He saw her eyes widen and he smiled slightly. "I suppose I could have put that better," he murmured. "But..last night, after we came back in, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I want." Dax stood up and walked over and sat down next to him. Julian took her hands in his. "I care about you a lot. You know that."
"But," she whispered.
Julian smiled. "But I...I don't know if I'm ready for this." He saw her face fall. "Jadzia," he whispered, gently touching her chin and raising it. "At least not yet and not what you want." She opened her mouth but he held up a hand. "At least not right away. I guess what I'm saying is if we could take this one step at a time, I...I'd appreciate it." Jadzia smiled softly and nodded. He kissed her gently. Jadzia smiled and tightened her grip on his hands.
"Papa?" Julian glanced over Jadzia's shoulders and started. Cati was standing there looking rather upset.
"There's something in my room!"
"What?" Julian turned to Jadzia and the stood up. "What is it Cati?"
"I don't know!" They headed in back and Julian glanced in the room and winced. "It's a Hara cat," he said.
"Good lord, how did it get in?"
"Last night?"
"Wouldn't we have seen it before this?" Julian shrugged and gestured for her to look. Dax peered around him and sighed. "Okay, maybe not." The cat was small, less than a foot long. "So how do we get rid of it?"
Julian shrugged. "I have no idea."
"Can we keep it?" Cati asked.
"Sorry sweety. I'm afraid not." Julian turned back and glanced at Jadzia. "Transporters?"
"I guess." She walked over and powered up the computer. "Locking on. Energizing." Julian turned and watched it disappear in the shimmering blue energy. "I transported it about 100 feet away from the runabout," Dax said. She glanced at the chrono and sighed. "You know what? We don't have time to go to the city anymore. We need to head back." She spotted Cati's pout and smiled. "I'm sorry, Cati. It's going to take us awhile to get back. We have to return the runabout." Cati glanced at her and then looked at Julian. He smiled sadly and shook his head.
"Sorry," he said, "but Jadzia's right. Come on. Let's get you dressed." He picked her up and glanced at Dax. "I'll be right up." She nodded and headed up front.
When he came back, she was rather disappointed to find he had put a t-shirt on. He smiled and sank into the co-pilot's chair. "All ready?" he asked. She nodded and lifted the runabout away from the planet's surface. Julian smiled. "I'm sorry it took so long. I decided to check to see if any other critters got on board last night."
Dax smiled. "Were there?"
"Fortunately, no." Dax chuckled and said, "Leaving the atmosphere. Setting a course for DS9."
"Maximum impulse," they both said. Julian smirked slightly and Dax laughed. "You're impossible," she said. Julian chuckled and glanced at the control panel. "Putting the runabout on autopilot," Dax said. She sighed and stood up. "I'm going to go get dressed."
"Alright. Could you tell Cati that it's okay to move about?"
"Sure," Dax smiled.
*******
"Orinoco to DS9. Requesting permission to dock."
"Permission granted," Kira said, laughing at the irony. "Did you enjoy your trip?"
"Absolutely, Major," Dax smiled and glanced at Julian.
"Runabout pad C is open. Welcome back."
"Acknowledged. Orinoco out." Dax cut the comm and turned to Julian. "That has to be the worst sense of de ja vu I've ever had and I have seven lifetimes of memories to deal with."
Julian laughed and watched as she piloted the runabout to the landing pad. "It was strange wasn't it? I really miss this place."
"Hmm. Me too. Maybe things won't seem so bad now that we're working together again." She set the runabout down and began to power the systems down. Julian smiled and nodded his agreement. He sighed and glanced at the panel. "All set?" Dax nodded and finished powering down. She locked out the controls and stood up. Julian scooped Cati up and they grabbed their bags and walked out. Julian sighed and glanced at her. "I'll see you later. Oh, don't forget about the party in three days. On the Melbourne. They're having the official Welcome party' for the new crew."
Dax groaned. "I really hate those things. Think you could talk the captain out of it?"
Julian chuckled and shook his head. "Sorry."
Dax sighed in frustration. "Alright. I'll see you later then." She smiled warmly and headed off towards her quarters. Julian gazed after her until she disappeared around a corner. "Come on, Cati. Let's go unpack."
*******
Julian tugged at his dress uniform uncomfortably. He truly hated the thing. He glanced around the room, trying to find a familiar face but none of the senior staff had arrived yet. Probably all hiding,' he thought. The doors opened and Julian snapped his head hopefully in that direction. He grinned and headed over. "Dax!" She turned and smiled at him. "Thank God you're here," he hissed once he got to her side.
Sh smiled thinly. "Yes, well, all the good hiding spots were taken up by the rest of the command crew." Julian studied her, wondering if she was joking. She glanced at him and giggled.
"Come on," she said, taking his arm. "The least you can do is introduce me to some people." Julian smiled and they walked over to a small clump of officers. They managed to work their way around the room in record time and were sitting at a table away from the rest of the group. Julian tugged at the collar of his uniform unhappily. "Think the captain will let us leave early?" she asked, sighing.
"Probably not," he said, missing the tiny smile on her face. He spotted someone and waved them over. Jadzia turned and smiled. "Hello, Liam. How wonderful of you to show up."
Liam grinned. "It's a talent. Arrive as late as possible and not get in trouble and leave the first second you're able to." The other two officers chuckled. "Hey, Julian. Who'd you get to take care of Cati for the night?"
"An old friend from the station," he replied, swirling the drink in his hand. Damn shame this is only synthale,' he thought. It would liven this party up a bit if it wasn't.' Dax caught the look on his face and chuckled. "What?" Julian asked.
"Nothing," Dax said. "I just recognized that look that you just got."
"What look?" Liam asked, glancing back and forth between the two.
Dax smiled and shook her head. "It's a long story. Something that happened a couple years back here on DS9."
Julian chuckled. "There was never any proof that *I* was behind that."
"You and Miles had had a prank war going on for weeks. Don't even tell me you're not the one who fixed the replicators so that it would produce non-synthale drinks only for him at his birthday."
Julian looked at her innocently. "Me? You honestly believe I'd purposely get my friend drunk on his birthday?"
"Yes!" she and Liam laughed. Julian frowned and shook his head.
"It's not like he didn't have a good time," Julian grumbled. Jadzia reached and rested her hand on his arm.
"I'm just teasing," she smiled. He smiled at her. He heard the band begin to play and sighed in relief. "Thank God. Entertainment!" Dax smiled at him. "Want to dance?" she asked. Julian paused for a moment and then nodded. They walked out to the dance floor and fell into the rhythm of the music. "It's been forever since I danced to big band," Dax smiled.
Julian smiled back. "Just follow my lead," he said softly. He felt her lean in slightly.
"Gladly," she said, gazing up at him.
Liam studied the couple, stunned. A few days ago, Julian was swearing that they were just friends. This doesn't look like *just friends* to me,' he thought. Liam spotted Meleria walk in with Arnwar. He motioned to them and they headed over.
"Looks like we arrived just in time," Meleria smiled. "The entertainment sound....oh, my. Is that Julian with our new science officer?" Liam nodded, smiling. "What on earth are you smiling about?"
"It's about time he stopped brooding," Liam said nodding towards them.
" Stopped brooding?!' He lost his wife!" Mel hissed.
Liam turned. "So. That doesn't mean he has to stop living also. They're old friends," he said.
"Is that supposed to make it any better?"
"Yes because that means that they know each other. I know that Julian isn't completely over Lara's death and that he's not going to want to rush into things with anyone. Who better to understand that but one of your best friends?"
"Especially a Trill with several lifetimes of memories," Arnwar said.
Mel frowned slightly and glanced back at them. "Well, I suppose you're right," she admitted as the song ended. She clapped politely and frowned. "They're coming this way. New topic!!"
"Hello Mel, Arnwar," Julian smiled. "Glad to see that you've finally come out of hiding to join the rest of us."
Mel smiled. "You're too much of a strait-lace Julian. You have to learn to bend the rules every once in a while."
"No one can bend them quite as efficiently as you, Mel." She smiled. He glanced at Dax. "You all remember Dax, right?" Everyone nodded.
"Having fun, Commander? Arnwar asked.
Dax choked on her drink. "Fun? At one of these? These stopped being fun about, oh, after my first one. Three hundred odd years ago." Julian, Arnwar, and Liam chuckled. Mel smiled thinly and shook her head. Oh, she's going to be tough,' Dax thought.
The officers talked the rest of the evening. Finally, people started to leave and they all bolted. Jadzia chuckled as they walked down the hallway. "I can't quite remember a party where the entire senior staff left at the first chance they got."
"We're pretty informal here," Mel said.
"Not informal enough," Julian muttered, undoing his uniform tunic. Mel smiled at him.
'Not only tough,' Dax thought, 'but perhaps a bit of competition.' She glanced at Julian. He seemed mildly oblivious to Meleria, which was driving her crazy to no end. "Dax?" She shook her head. "I'm sorry, Julian. What?"
"I asked if you wanted to join the rest of us in the observation lounge for some poker," he smiled.
"Since when do you play poker?" she asked smiling.
"He doesn't," Liam ribbed. Julian glared at him.
Dax smiled. "Sure."
"Alright. We'll meet there in ten minutes. I want to get out of this thing." Julian smiled. The rest of the crew nodded and headed to their quarters. Dax walked along with him. "Where are your quarters?" he asked.
"About five doors down from yours," she smiled. Julian nodded. "I'll see you in ten," she said as she stopped at the doors. Julian nodded and continued down the hallway.
*******
"What's your poison, Commander?" Liam asked as she walked into the lounge. "We're overriding the synthale, just so you know."
"Black hole," Dax replied, sitting down. Liam froze. "You're kidding, right?"
"No, I'm afraid she's not," Julian said.
Liam shrugged and said, "One Black Hole, override synthale." The drink appeared and he handed it to her. "The newbie's opening the bidding tonight folks!" Julian chuckled and leaned back in his chair. These people have a lot to learn about Dax,' he thought.
*******
"Full house?!? Bloody hell! That's her third one tonight!" Dax grinned and pulled in her winnings.
"She must be cheating," Mel grumbled unhappily.
"Nope!" Dax replied cheerfully, making a show of counting her chips.
"Bloody hell," Liam muttered again. "That's it. I'm calling it a night." Everyone else muttered in agreement. Dax shrugged and turned to Julian.
"Did I look like I was cheating to you?"
"No," he smiled. "In fact, you folded a couple of times with some pretty decent hands."
"In other words, she felt sorry for us and was letting us win," Arnwar grumbled. Dax smiled and shrugged. She glanced at the chrono and groaned. "Oh, gods. I'm going to bed!" Julian glanced and winced. "Oh, Cati's going to have fun with me tomorrow." He heard Dax muffle her laughter. "Stop laughing or I'll have her wake you up at 5:30 too." Dax cracked up. The rest of the group exchanged glances and smiled.
"I'd best be going," Mel said. "I'm going to have one hell of a hangover tomorrow and I want to get as much sleep as possible so I can be fully awake to enjoy it." Everyone laughed and nodded goodnight. Jadzia stood up and turned to Julian.
"Need a hand?"
"No, I'm fine, thanks." He stood up and glanced at Arnwar and Liam. "Good night. See you bright and early at the staff meeting tomorrow." They smiled and nodded at the two of them as they left.
"Hell," Liam muttered. "How on earth does he get so lucky?"
Arnwar shook his head. "I don't know my friend. I'll see you tomorrow."
*******
Dax smiled to herself as she and Julian walked along the corridors in a companionable silence. They reached her quarters and she paused. "Want to come in and sober up a bit?" she asked quietly. Julian paused and nodded. He wasn't too drunk but he'd hate to have Cati see him even tipsy. She tapped the command to her doors and they opened. She walked in and said, "Computer, half lights."
Julian smiled. "You are more intelligent than I give you credit for," he said as he sank down on her couch.
"Thank you," she smiled and walked over to the replicator. "Two coffees. One black with sugar. The other..."
"Cream, no sugar," he replied.
"Cream, no sugar." The replicator whirred and Dax picked up their drinks and walked back to the couch. Julian accepted the cup gratefully and took a sip. Dax sank down next to him. "Do these little impromptu parties happen often?"
"No," Julian replied. "Thank God." Dax smiled at him. She could feel the alcohol beginning to have an effect on her. Black hole's had a tendency to sneak up on her. She closed her eyes and tilted her head back. "You alright?" Julian asked.
"I'm fine. Finally beginning to feel the effects of the last Black Hole I had, though."
Julian chuckled wryly. "I've been feeling the effects for about an hour. I can't believe you actually conned me into having one."
Jadzia chuckled and glanced at him. "Dax processes poisons. It takes a while for things to really hit." Julian smiled and closed his eyes. Dax studied his features in the dim light. Seemingly of its own free will, her hand gently brushed his hair back off his forehead. Julian opened his eyes and gazed at her. Jadzia paused and pulled back. "I'm sorry. I..."
Julian smiled and shook his head. "I said take things slow, not avoid all physical contact." She blushed but smiled. He reached and gently took her hand in his. "Come here," he whispered. She slid closer to him. He gently wrapped his arms around her and held her close. Dax closed her eyes and sighed contentedly. She could stay here all night but she knew he should be getting back to his quarters soon. After several minutes, she sat up.
"It's late. I should get to bed. So should you." Julian smiled and nodded. He sat up and pulled her close and kissed her. Dax leaned against him, enjoying the moment. He pulled back slightly after a moment.
"I should be going," he whispered. She nodded quietly but neither moved. Julian swallowed, wondering how much of what was happening was the alcohol and how much was emotion. If she gave me a reason to stay, I probably would,' he thought detachedly. After a long moment, she pulled back. He shook his head slowly, trying to clear it. Julian stood up and sighed. "I'll see you tomorrow," he whispered. Dax nodded and watched him leave. She stared at the door for a long time before heading into her bedroom.

Dax woke up the next morning and winced. "Computer, time?"
"Oh seven twenty-eight."
"Oh, hell," she grumbled. "Lights," she commanded. The lights came on full force. "Ah! Half lights!" Dax rubbed a hand across her forehead and winced. "Maybe a shower will help," she muttered, heading into the bath.
Julian tapped the chime to her quarters, wondering if she was up. "Jadzia?" he called. He tapped the chime again. No response. "Bashir to Dax," he said. Still no response. Julian frowned. 'Well, the worst that could happen is that she'll be asleep and I'll have to deal with a hang over.' "Computer, emergency medical override. Authorization Bashir 15 alpha theta." The doors slid open and Julian glanced around. "Jadzia?"
"Julian!?!" She poked her head around the corner of the bedroom door. "How did you get in?"
Julian paused and could feel his cheeks heating up. "I tried the door chime at several times and the commbadge. You weren't responding so..."
"You overrode the lock," she finished, pulling back into the bedroom. She smiled. "Why the concern?"
"You had two Black Holes and you weren't responding to your commbadge," Julian said. "Either you were a real sound sleeper or you were unconscious."
"Or I was in the shower," she said, stepping out of the bedroom, her robe securely tied around her waist. She walked over to the replicator. "Raktagino." She turned to Julian. "Want one?"
"No thanks. I took care of my hangover already." Dax chuckled and sank down at the table. "Have a seat," she said. Julian smiled and glanced around. "Half lights still?"
"I just got up. Give me a bit." She closed her eyes and massaged her temples.
"Do you want me to get you something?" he asked.
Dax shook her head slowly. "No, the hangover remedies just make me nauseous. I'll be fine in a bit." She took a sip of her coffee and sighed. "So, when are you due in the infirmary?"
"Oh-nine hundred."
"Hmm. And you're ready for duty already?"
"Well," Julian hesitated. "I thought I'd stop in and see if you needed anything."
Jadzia gazed up at him and smiled. "I'm fine. Thank you though." She hesitated. "Have you had breakfast yet?" Julian shook his head. "Oh, good. Would you get something while I change?"
Julian chuckled. "Some hostess. Makes the guess cook breakfast."
"Yeah, yeah." She stood up and headed towards the bedroom. "I didn't say you had to. It was simply a suggestion." Julian smiled and watched her go before heading over to the replicator.
*******
Dax walked into the science lab and grinned. It's all MINE!' she thought with delight. A few people were on duty. Normally, she would be on the bridge but the Captain had suggested working in the lab for a few days and getting acquainted.
"Morning, Commander," came a voice from behind her. She turned. "Hello, Meleria," she smiled.
"Here's the roster for today and the names of your staff and their specialties. Sorry this took so long to get to you." Meleria said. Dax took PADD she offered and glanced at it. "Well, it's a bit more interesting than the past few assignments." Meleria headed off and Dax glanced around and settled herself in at a work station, hoping to finish the cataloging her predecessor had left behind. She had worked for about ten minutes when her commbadge chirped. "Bashir to Dax." She sighed and tapped her badge. "Dax here."
"Report to sick bay at your earliest convenience."
"I'm on my way. Dax out." She cut the connection and stood up. "I'll be back as soon as possible," she said to one of the staff. She nodded and continued working. Dax walked out and headed towards sick bay. She walked in just as Julian was exiting from his office.
"Good," he smiled. "I forgot to tell you that you have a few vaccinations to get."
Dax groaned. "What kinds?"
"Diseases you've never even heard of and never want to get. Have a seat." Julian walked over to a storage shelf and picked up a couple of cartridges for the hypo. Dax sat herself down on one of the biobeds. Julian turned around and headed back towards her, carefully loading they hypo. "So, how's work been?"
"All ten minutes of it have been fine," she replied sarcastically. Julian smiled and gently pressed the hypo against her neck. Dax heard the hiss as it discharged the contents into her system. "And I'd like to go back, too. I have a lot of work to do."
"Well, you may want to take a fifteen minute break before heading back," he said as he reloaded the hypo with another vaccination. "And maybe a couple throughout the day." Dax sighed in frustration as he pressed the second one against her neck. "It all depends on how you react to these. Some of the crew didn't have any side effects. Others...." He saw her eyes widen and she became white as a sheet. Julian gently eased her back against the bed. "Others have complained of dizzy spells, nausea and headaches of varying degrees of severity."
"No kidding," she murmured. Julian smiled and turned back to reloading the hypo. "Don't worry," he said. "You only have about five more."
"Five!" she started to sit up and immediately the world began to swim around her. She felt Julian gently but firmly press her back against the bed. "Just relax," he said quietly. "Now, this one might make you a bit nauseous...."
Dax closed her eyes and felt the cool metal of the hypo against her skin. She didn't open her eyes until he had finished. When she did, the world seemed entirely too bright. She moaned softly and attempted to sit up. "Oh, not quite yet Commander." She felt his hand rest on her shoulder. "It seems Trills react a bit more strongly than others. You've been out for about five minutes."
"What?" she squinted up at him.
"Computer, dim light over bed six," he said softly. The light dimmed to tolerable levels and she gazed up at him. "You must have passed out. Only one or two people reacted like that. Now just rest and don't try to move." He gave her shoulder a squeeze and walked over to a console. Dax sighed and closed her eyes again.
Julian glanced back at her and smiled. She's actually listening for once. Well, I doubt she feels in any shape to disagree.' He began working on some samples recently collected until about twenty minutes had passed. Julian glanced back at the biobed and walked over. "Dax?" She opened her eyes and looked up at him. "How do you feel?" he asked.
"Fine. Can I leave now?" Julian bit back a smile and nodded. She sat up and paused a moment.
"Still dizzy?" he asked. She glanced at him and smiled. "A bit. I'll be fine."
Julian nodded. "Alright. Just take it easy for the rest of the day." Dax nodded and started to walk out. "Dax," he called. She paused and turned. Julian walked over. "Stop by this evening," he said softly. She paused and nodded, smiling. "Is that all, Doctor?" she asked playfully.
"For now," he replied, smiling. She nodded and left. Julian sighed and leaned against a bed. After a moment, he shook his head and went back to work.
*******
Dax tapped the door chime to his quarters later that evening. She had been off work for an hour and had taken a brief nap to sleep off some of the inoculations. She heard a muffled come in and opened the doors. She stepped in and glanced around. "Julian?"
"Over here. Cati, get off my back please." Dax heard a giggle and smiled. Julian stood up and smiled. "Sorry. Someone thought it would be a good idea to tackle me." He smiled at Cati who grinned shyly at Dax.
"That's alright," she smiled. Cati's not the only one,' she thought.
"Have you had dinner?"
"No," Dax admitted. "I was sleeping off some of the side effects from the shots."
Julian glanced at her concerned. "Still dizzy?"
"No. I had a headache," she admitted. She saw him frown and he walked over. "How bad?"
"Not too bad," she said.
"What other symptoms have you had?" he asked.
"Why? Is there something wrong?"
"Well, most people were fine by about midday," he admitted. She felt him place a hand on her forehead and he shrugged. "Well, I don't think you're running a fever."
"I'm fine, Dad," she teased. He smiled and shook his head. "Alright. Let me know if you feel bad tomorrow, though. Now," he clapped his hands, "what do you want for dinner?"
Dax shrugged her shoulders. "I don't care. What were you planning on having?"
"Well, on Fridays Cati usually chooses," he admitted. Dax smiled.
"That's fine. I'm starving." Julian nodded at her and turned to Cati who was coloring at the table.
"Cati, what do you want for dinner?"
"P'sketti!" she smiled. Julian glanced at Jadzia who nodded. "Alright. Can I get you something to drink Jadzia?"
"Oh, just water for now, thanks." Julian nodded and headed for the replicator. Dax smiled and was about to sit down on the couch when Cati called to her.
"Jdsia! Come look!" She saw Julian turn and smile at her and Dax felt herself warm to her toes.
"What Cati?" she asked, leaning over her shoulder.
"Look what I made!" Dax smiled and gazed at the unintelligible drawing.
"That's wonderful," she said. "Tell me about it."
Julian walked over and rested his hand on her shoulder. Dax turned and gazed at him. He held out a glass of water. She smiled and took it. Julian smiled at her and glanced at the drawing Cati was happily explaining. He felt a flash of pride and affection and allowed himself the luxury of gently wrapping his arm around Jadzia. He wasn't sure how Cati would react to Jadzia at first but he had a general idea now. He glanced at Jadzia. She was listening to Cati's explanation and sipping her water. He gazed at her as she asked Cati something about her drawing, pointing to a scribble on the page. Julian smiled and gave her a tender hug before heading back to get dinner.
Dax followed him with her eyes and smiled. She realized that if she wanted to become involved with him she'd have to earn Cati's trust too. Jadzia had to admit that she wasn't sure how well she would react around Cati. Dax had been a parent several times over and she didn't consider herself the best parent. But that wasn't Jadzia Dax. That had been Emony Dax and Torias Dax. Jadzia felt herself caring for the little girl very much. She's so cheerful. I can't help but love her.' Cati finished explaining her drawing and turned to Julian.
"Papa, can I play with the piano?" she asked.
Julian turned and nodded. "Sure. Let me get it." He finished programing the replicator and headed into the bedroom and came out with the keyboard. He neatly unrolled it on the floor. "Be careful, though."
"I will." Cati sat down and turned it on. Dax smiled as she happily plunked out several dissonant chords.
"Modern music," she smiled walking over to Julian. He turned and smiled.
"Ah, she'd love to sit and do that whenever Lara played." Dax saw a sad fondness fill his eyes and she gently slid an arm around his shoulders. Julian glanced at her and smiled. "I'm sorry."
She shook her head. "Don't be." She glanced at Cati and smiled. She was trying to link notes together. "How old is she?" she asked.
"Three. Why?"
"She's good," Dax said.
Julian smiled. "You're trying to win me over by complimenting my daughter," he teased. "It's working." Dax smiled softly and shook her head. "No, she actually has a lot of potential." Dax gazed at him and smiled. "I was only joined to Joran for six months but I can tell the difference between just goofing off and actually trying to play." Julian studied her face and smiled. He reached for her and pulled her close. Dax gazed into his dark eyes. She could feel him searching her eyes. A soft spark passed between them but neither was sure if it was wise to act on it. After a moment, Dax stepped back. She glanced over her shoulder at Cati and took a deep breath. She felt a hand gently trace the spots along the side of her face and she turned back and gazed at him. He smiled tenderly and slid his hand down her arm and gently took her hand. Dax smiled and squeezed it. Suddenly, a small voice piped up.
"When's dinner?" Julian glanced over Dax's shoulder and smiled.
"Soon," he said. He returned the gesture and let go of her hand and turned back to the replicator. Jadzia turned and glanced at Cati.
"Can you play?" Cati asked pointing to the keyboard.
Jadzia paused. She knew that if she said yes, Cati would want to hear something but she had never really played for anyone. "Well, yes," she admitted after a moment.
"Could you play something?" Cati asked. Dax hesitated and nodded. She walked over and sat down next to Cati. Julian turned and watched as Dax hesitated for a moment and then turned to Cati.
"What do you want to hear?"
"Lullaby!" she smiled. Jadzia hesitated and glanced at Julian.
He smiled softly and said, "It's an old terran piece. By a twentieth century artist."
Dax glanced at Cati and then back at Julian. "Do you have the music?"
Julian hesitated and shrugged. "Possibly. I don't know...." Dax nodded and glanced down at the keys.
"Would it be in the computer?" she asked. Julian shrugged. Dax got up and walked over. "Computer, search for notation for Lullaby' by...." she glanced up at him.
"Billy Joel," he supplied.
"Billy Joel," she said. The music appeared on the computer and Dax studied it. "Julian, do you have a PADD I could borrow?" He nodded and walked over and handed her one. "Thanks. Computer, copy notation to the PADD." Within seconds, the music was on the PADD. Dax smiled and walked back. "Alright. Let's take a look," she said. She glanced through it again and nodded. I can do this. It's not too hard...' She began to play, enjoying how neatly the chords fit together. Cati smiled and watched her play.
Julian watched quietly. The last time he had heard it played was two years ago. Oh, gods,' he thought. Of all the songs Cati had to ask for. But can you blame her? She misses her mother as much as you do. Lara used to play this for her constantly.' Julian gazed at Jadzia, who was concentrating on the music. Not a note out of place. My god. I knew she was talented, but I had no idea.' He listened as she finished the song. Cati clapped delightedly. Dax smiled and ruffled her hair, blushing. I can't believe I just did that.' She glanced up at Julian and saw him studying her. He smiled and turned back to the replicator. Dax bit back a sigh.
"Again," Cati begged.
"Oh, sorry Cati. Dinner's ready." Julian set the food on the table and smiled as she ran over. They enjoyed a leisurely dinner and after Julian put her down to bed. He walked out to find Dax studying the PADD of music. "Hey," he whispered. She glanced up at him and smiled.
"Hi," she said, patting the couch. He sat down next to her and she set the PADD down. He smiled.
"Thank you for entertaining her. The time before dinner she's a bundle of energy."
"That's alright. She's really adorable." Julian smiled and took her hands in his. Dax gazed at him, wondering how exactly to pursue this. "Julian..." He glanced at her and smiled. "What happened earlier?" she asked quietly. "Before dinner. I...I know you said you wanted to take this slowly but...."
Julian took a deep breath and nodded. "I know. I just...I don't know. For a moment, everything just seemed right for the first time in a long time." He tenderly brushed her cheek. Dax closed her eyes and felt his lips press against hers. She leaned against him, enjoying his touch. He pulled back slowly, not sure he wanted to stop and not sure he wanted to go any further. He closed his eyes and rested his forehead against hers. "It's a nice theory," he whispered after a moment. "I'm just not sure it's feasible."
Dax pulled back. "Julian, I don't want to pressure you. If I am...."
"No. It's not you. It's me." He saw her nod slowly and sigh. She swallowed and glanced at her empty glass of water. "I'll get you some," he said, smiling. Dax smiled and glanced down at her hands. She was mildly confused. There were times when she was sure he wanted more and other times she didn't know. She felt a hand on her shoulders and she lifted her head. Julian sank down next to her and gently set the glass of water on the table. Dax smiled at him and leaned back against the couch. "So," he said softly, "how was your first day?"
Dax smiled and sighed. "Well, it was a lot of catch up work to do from Leirna..." she glanced at him. He simply nodded. Dax tilted her head and gently took his hands into hers. "You've really been through hell the last two years, haven't you?" Julian smiled sadly and glanced down at their hands. Dax gently tightened her grip. "Julian, if you want to talk about it, I'm here."
He glanced up at her and sighed. "No, I'm fine." Dax gazed at him, concerned, but nodded.
"Alright. But if you ever want to..." He nodded and glanced at the keyboard.
"You know," he said, "I knew you could play, but I had no idea how well." He turned back to face her and saw her blushing brightly. He smiled. "What?"
Jadzia shook her head. "I really don't play for people all that often. It's never been high on the priority list." Julian smiled and nodded. He was about to say something when they heard crying coming from Cati's room. Julian glanced over, concerned. "I'll be right back," he said, getting up. Dax watched as he disappeared into her room and got up and followed. She saw him sitting on the side of her bed gently rocking her. "It's alright, love. It was only a dream," he whispered consolingly. Cati sobbed something into his shoulder and Julian gently tightened his embrace. Dax gazed at them, remembering how he had jerked awake that night on Bajor when they drifted off. She felt her throat tighten. Oh, gods. How could I have missed it.' She stepped into the room and gently rested her hand on his shoulder. She could feel them shaking softly and she sank down next to him, sliding her arms around him. She rested her head against his shoulder.
Julian closed his eyes tightly and held Cati close. He felt Dax gently hug him and he smiled sadly. He wanted to do something to let her know it was appreciated but his arms were full. Cati's sobbing had lessened and she was gently sniffing and taking ragged breaths. He gently kissed her head and rocked her. He felt a gentle hand brush at his cheek and he turned to face her. Dax gazed at him, concern reflected in her blue eyes. He averted his gaze and glanced back down at Cati. Her breathing had pretty much evened out except for the occasional jagged breath. Julian shifted and lay her back down on the bed. He covered her up and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. He sat up and glanced over his shoulder. Dax had left the room as quietly as she had come. Insanely, he prayed she hadn't left altogether. He walked out of Cati's room and saw her sitting on the couch. Julian took a deep breath and walked over. Dax glanced up as he approached and he hesitated. She stood up and folded him into her arms. Julian closed his eyes and gently leaned into the embrace. He felt like he had to explain what had happened but he wasn't sure where to start.
Jadzia gently held him. When she had seen him holding his sobbing daughter, quietly crying himself, she felt like her heart had split in two. Is that what it was like for Nilani after Torias was killed. Oh, gods...' She choked back a sob. She felt him pull back and gaze at her in concern. She smiled weakly. 'With everything, he's still concerned about others.'
"What's wrong?" he whispered.
Dax shook her head. "Just remembering," she whispered. Julian gazed at her, confused. "Torias," she said softly. "Just stirred a memory." Julian's dark eyes widened and he nodded. He sighed and sank down on the couch, gently pulling her with him. She slid close to him and they leaned against each other. Dax hesitated before asking, "What was wrong?"
"She had a nightmare," he whispered, not completely trusting his voice.
"About Lara?" Julian nodded. Dax stared off into the distance. "Julian, are you sure you don't want to talk?" Julian swallowed and sighed. "There isn't much to say," he sighed.
Dax pulled back and gently touched his chin. "Cati's not the only one who's been having nightmares," she whispered. Julian sighed and turned away. "Julian, please. I care about you so much. I hate to see you like this. At least let me understand why."
"Why?" he whispered bitterly. "Why do you think?"
"Julian I..I didn't mean it like that. I..." She closed her eyes and pulled back. "I'll go. I'm not being much help." She stood up, not wanting him to know how close to tears she was.
"Jadzia," he whispered. He got up and pulled her close. "I know you didn't mean it like that. I'm sorry."
She leaned against him. "Don't apologize. I just...I only want to help."
"And you have." He closed his eyes, resting his head against hers. She sighed. "Can we just forget this?" he asked quietly. He pulled back. She smiled softly and nodded. He nodded and gently hugged her. She leaned against him and closed her eyes. He sighed and released her after a moment. She smiled and they sat back down. She could sense a distance between them that hadn't been there earlier. She bit back a sigh of frustration. They talked for hours about inconsequentialities. Julian asked if she had been keeping in touch with the rest of the crew. She nodded and told him about what had been happening. When she left, he gently kissed her goodnight, but it was nothing spectacular. Dax walked back to her quarters and let her frustration out in a flood of tears.
*******
Julian woke the next morning feeling drained and empty. He sighed and got up. He poked his head in to check on Cati. She was still sound asleep. Mildly stunned, he walked back out. He showered and got dressed and had finished with morning ablutions before she stirred. He walked in and gently brushed a lock of her hair back. His eyes widened and he placed his hand against her forehead. "Oh, my god," he murmured and gently shook her. She stirred and whimpered a bit. "Come on, love. Get up." She shook her head. Julian scooped her up, still stunned by the heat she was radiating. He practically ran to sickbay and placed her on a biobed. She was shivering. "It's going to be alright love," he said. He ran a tricorder over her and frowned. There didn't seem to be any form of infection, viral or bacterial. The only sign there was that she was sick was her fever of 102*F. Cati whimpered and reached for him. "Just a moment love. Don't worry." He went over and got a cooling blanket to help bring her temp down. She didn't like it too much as she began to cry.
"Doctor? Is everything okay?" Julian turned and saw one of his techs standing near.
Julian frowned and shook his head. "I'm not sure." He showed her the tricorder readings. She studied them while he tried to console Cati.
"What do you think?" The assistant shook her head. "There doesn't seem to be any cause of infection."
"I know," he murmured. He reached and picked up a hypo. "Hold on, love. We'll find out what's wrong." He gently pressed the hypo against her arm and withdrew a bit of blood. "Run this through a complete analysis," he said, handing the vial to the tech. She nodded and walked off. Julian smoothed the hair back off Cati's forehead. She seemed a bit cooler. "How're you feeling? Better?" She nodded and sniffed. Julian smiled softly. "Don't worry love. I'm going to find out what's making you sick and then we'll take care of it, alright?" She nodded again. Julian gently kissed her forehead and raised the optional sides on the biobed when toddlers used them. "I've got to go do work now. I'll be back."
" Kay," she sniffled. Julian quietly walked off and glanced at the tech.
"It's running through now," she said. Julian nodded.
"Let me know when it's done. I'll be in the lab." The tech nodded and he walked off. He immersed himself in his work to take his mind off Cati until the tests were done. He nearly jumped out of his skin when the lab tech approached him with the results. "Thank you," he murmured, studying them. Everything seemed normal. Julian sighed and studied the tricorder again. WBC count was high, which pointed to an infection, but no agents were present. The tricorder would have picked that up and the blood screen would have picked up anything more serious. Julian glared at the results and picked up another tricorder and walked back to Cati. She was sleeping soundly as he ran a second scan. He glanced at the results and frowned. Still nothing. He bit his lip and frowned. Something tugged at his memory, but he couldn't put his finger on it. He sighed and tapped his commbadge and said, "Bashir to Dax."
"Go ahead."
"Could you come to the infirmary? I need your opinion on something."
"I'm on my way. Dax out." Julian turned back to Cati and sighed. He felt like he had seen this before, but he couldn't put his finger on it. Dax walked in in a few minutes. "What is it Julian?" She glanced at Cati and her eyes widened. "What's wrong?" she asked, her voice lowering.
"I don't know," he admitted. "But I feel like I should. Come look at this." She followed him into a spacious lab area. He gestured to the two tricorders and the CBC results. She sat down and studied them. He saw her brow furrow and she shook her head. "I don't know, Julian. I can't remember anything like this. The closest thing would be the camp fever all those years ago, but we could find an infectious agent. Did you do a manual scan?"
"Not yet," he said, frowning. "But in that instance, our tricorders could pick something up."
"Except the second time, remember? Maybe this is just as tricky."
Julian nodded. "Alright. But where would she have contracted it from?"
"Primary care?" Dax suggested. "You know kids spread colds and bugs like wildflowers in situations like that. Maybe one of the parents of one of the kids picked up this from an away mission and it doesn't affect them."
Julian nodded. "Alright. It's a start." He glanced at her and smiled. "Thanks."
"No problem. That's my job," she smiled. He nodded and she started out. "Oh, Julian. Don't hesitate to call again. There isn't much going on in the lab." He smiled and she walked out.
"Alright," he murmured. He called the lab tech and told her to run a manual scan of Cati's blood. He'd follow up later with one of his own. "Computer, show me a list of every child in Primary Care 1-3 and their parents names."
*******
Jadzia poked her head in the infirmary at the end of her shift and found him leaning over a scope. "Find anything?"
"Not yet," he admitted. Dax could hear his frustration. She walked over behind her and rested her hands on his shoulders. "Let me take a look." Julian gestured to a second scope and she smiled. She sank down next to him and began looking. "Have you found the potential carrier yet?"
"There are a couple people who could be carrying it. I have them slated for early morning appointments." He frowned and removed the current sample. Dax sent him a concerned glance. "Julian, did you eat at all today?"
"No time," he murmured, sliding another sample in. "Even with the cooling blanket on, her temp is still high."
Dax frown deepened. "You're not doing Cati any good by not eating. Have you taken a break at all?"
"No." He bent over the scanner. Dax stood up and walked over behind him and began massaging his shoulders. He sighed. "Dax."
"Take a break," she murmured. He sighed and closed his eyes. He could feel the muscles in his neck and shoulders loosening up. After several minutes, she said, "Alright. Now, tell me what we know." Her hands worked at the base of his neck. He sighed and began. "Well, she's running a high fever, but there doesn't seem to be any cause."
Dax shook her head. "Julian, don't generalize. Come on, this will help you concentrate."
Julian chuckled softly. "I don't see how," he murmured teasingly. Dax smiled and shook her head.
"Come on," she encouraged.
"Alright, alright." He sighed. "Okay. She's running a high fever. I haven't detected any bacteria or viruses. Her WBC count is elevated, which generally points to an infection but I can't discover any." He tilted his head to the right. "So what does this leave us?"
"What have you been looking for in your manual scans?"
"Anything anomalous," he admitted. "I have no reference to go off of."
"Yes you do. You have an elevated WBC count. What would cause that?"
"An infection," he frowned.
"What else?"
"Do you know something I don't?" he asked, his frustration showing.
"If I did, I would have told you. I'm just trying to get you to think about this." She stopped and simply rested her hands on his shoulders. "We know it's not a known bacteria or virus, so it looks like we have a new one."
"Yes, but where?" Julian turned to face her. She frowned and shook her head.
"That's what we have to find out first. What sets apart your prospective hosts?"
"Different anatomy and immune systems," he shrugged.
"Alright, so tomorrow, we look for a tricorder reading that matches Cati's." She gazed at him.
"That's it?"
"That's all we can do for now," she replied. Julian sighed and gazed at the small form on the biobed. Dax sank down next to him. "Why don't we get something to eat right now." Julian glanced at her and nodded reluctantly. They ordered a small dinner from the replicator and ate in his office. "So what have you done all day?" he asked.
"Absolutely nothing. I can't wait till I'm on bridge duty."
Julian smiled. "When's that?"
"Tomorrow," she smiled. Julian nodded and picked at his meal. "Julian, eat something," Dax sighed in frustration. Julian glanced up and sighed.
"I'm just not hungry," he said.
Dax gazed at him and set her plate down and walked over to him. She gently took his hands in hers. "She's going to be fine," she whispered. "We'll figure this out." Julian smiled wanly and glanced down at their hands. Dax sank down to his level and hugged him gently. "Believe me," she murmured, "I know what you're going through. Anyone who's been a parent does." He held her close, allowing himself to relax. After a moment, she pulled back. She smiled at him gently and he kissed her.
"Thank you," he said softly. "You've been a wonderful friend and incredibly patient. I appreciate it." Dax smiled and nodded. They heard a soft whimpering sound coming from the main infirmary and walked out. "Hey sweetheart," Julian murmured, gently brushing her hair back. "How're you feeling?"
"Sick," she replied, pouting slightly.
Julian bit back a smile. The look on her face was priceless. "What's wrong?" he asked, sitting on the corner of the bed.
"I'm hot!" she said.
"Anything else?" he asked gently. She shook her head miserably. Julian nodded. "Well, we're going to find out what's wrong. Don't worry." Cati nodded and reached for him. Julian scooped her up and held her close. Cati buried her face against his neck. Julian smiled and cradled her. After a moment, Cati lifted her head and glanced over at Jadzia.
"...Lo," she said.
"Hi Cati," she smiled. She reached and brushed her hand over her cheek. She managed to keep her face neutral but she suddenly understood why Julian was so worried. She glanced at Julian and smiled slightly. "I'll see you later," she whispered. She knew he'd want to spend some time with his daughter.
Julian smiled tenderly and nodded. "I'll stop by later on," he replied. She nodded and quietly walked out. Julian turned back to Cati and gently rocked her, lulling her back to sleep.

Dax sat down in her quarters and called up the data she and Julian had been analyzing. She stared at the tricorder results. Nothing seemed wrong except for her fever. Dax sighed. "Computer, is there any previous tricorder data for the subject?"
"There are seventeen different scans for the subject."
"Show me a list." Dax studied her terminal for a moment. "Computer, show me the scans from stardate 50112.4 and today." Dax studied them and sighed. Not a clue. She turned away and stood up and immediately the world swam before her eyes. She sank back down into the chair and swallowed hard. After a moment, her vision cleared. Dax debated calling Julian but decided to wait until he got to her quarters. She frowned suddenly and turned back. "Computer, has the subject Catilynn Bashir received full inoculations?"
"Negative."
"What inoculations is she currently missing?" The computer listed a few. "And would the symptoms of any of the diseases match the tricorder data?"
"Negative."
"Damn," she hissed. The door chimed and she glanced up. "Come in. Computer, discontinue inquiry." Julian stepped in the room and smiled at her. "Is she asleep?" Dax asked.
Julian nodded. "For now."
Dax paused and sighed. "Julian, I hate to add to your troubles but...." He walked over. "What's wrong?" he asked.
"Well, actually, when I stood up a moment ago, everything moved."
"A dizzy spell?" Dax nodded. Julian reached for her hand and helped her up. She closed her eyes for a moment and leaned against him. "Come on. I have a tricorder in my quarters." He supported her as they walked to his room. He tapped the controls and the door slid open. He gently sat her down on the couch and went to get it. He came back and knelt in front of her, running the tricorder over her. "Well, I don't see anything that could cause this," he murmured. "You're temp is a bit higher than normal, which would point to an infection but...." his voice trailed off and he glanced up at her. "You don't show any signs of it."
"Dear lord," she muttered, leaning forward to look at the tricorder. Everything shifted and she began to fall. Julian caught her and eased her back up onto the couch. "I'm the one who got Cati sick," she said softly.
Julian nodded. "It looks that way."
Dax closed her eyes. "Oh, Julian. I'm sorry."
He smiled and shook his head. "Don't worry. It's not like you had any control over it." He glanced back at the readings. "This at least gives me a place to start."
"The inoculations," Dax said. Julian glanced up at her. "It could be that I reacted badly to them and passed whatever this is on to Cati." Julian paused and then nodded. "If that's the case, lets get you to sick bay before you infect the rest of the crew."
"Julian," she said, studying him. "If anyone is infected, it's probably you." He nodded.
"All the more reason to get moving." He helped her up again. "Come on. Lets go." Dax sighed and they left.

Dax stretched out on the biobed and felt him withdraw some blood. "You sure I can't help?" she asked.
"You can barely stand," he replied as he prepared some slides. Dax sighed and glanced over at Cati. Julian moved over to the scopes and began studying the samples. He was about to give up on that one when his eye caught something. "What is this?" He increased the magnification and smiled. "I knew I had seen this somewhere. Only this is the reverse but..." He pulled back and smiled. "That's why yours and Cati's WBC count is up. They aren't white blood cells."
"Run this by me again?"
"Remember the second mutation of the camp fever? RBC count skyrocketed because they weren't red blood cells. Well, they were but they had mitochondrion." Dax nodded, remembering. "Well, we have a similar situation here. Granular monocytes." Julian smiled and picked up one of Cati's slides.
"Granular monocytes? Julian, monocytes are agranular."
"I know," he smiled. "None in here. No wonder I wasn't seeing anything wrong with her blood." He turned to Dax. "Monocytes only make up about three to nine percent of all white blood cells. You usually don't get them in a typical count. But they live longer than the rest of all the white blood cells, up to several months." He grinned. "That's why she's running such a high fever. Monocytes are responsible for a lot of phagocytic action in the blood. An increase in monocytes would lead to an increase in phagocytosis. Increase that, you increase metabolism, which is shown in an increase in body temp." Julian turned back to the scanner. "Now all I need to do is tailor an antidote for this."
"Let me. That's my job." Dax sat up, swaying slightly.
Julian walked over. "Dax...."
"Just lead me to the lab and let me work," she frowned. He hesitated and then helped her over. Dax sat down and began working on a type specific antibody. One mistake and it could wipe out our normal monocytes,' she thought.
*******
"I think this is it," Dax muttered hours later. She glanced over her shoulder and realized Julian had went into his office. "Well, now what?" she muttered. She tapped her commbadge. "Dax to Bashir." Julian appeared at the doorway.
"Why didn't you just call?" he asked.
"I didn't want to wake Cati. This should work," she said, gesturing to her work. Julian walked over and glanced at the data. He smiled after a moment and nodded.
"Good," he murmured. He glanced at her and smiled. She leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. "You look tired," he murmured, gently brushing at her hair. She smiled and nodded. "Hmm. Come on. Let's get you to bed," he smiled.
Dax shook her head. "No, I'm fine. I'd rather finish this first." Julian hesitated and then nodded.

Julian loaded the hypo and glanced at Jadzia. She smiled and sat down. "I'll be the guinea pig", she teased. Julian chuckled and injected the antibody into her. She smiled at him as he moved over to Cati and gently pressed the hypo against her. He then injected it into himself. He had run a test while she was gone and had determined that he had been infected also. "My only question is how did I give it to Cati?" Dax said.
"You might not have. You could have transferred it to me and I gave it to Cati," he replied. Dax paused and nodded.
"I suppose," she said. "Is there any way of telling which inoculation caused this?"
Julian sighed. "I suppose, but I'll deal with that in the morning." He glanced at Cati's sleeping form. "I suppose she should stay here for tonight," he murmured.
Dax nodded. "Why don't you have one of your assistants keep an eye on her. You looked wiped out." Julian hesitated and nodded. He paged the nurse who was on call and asked her to report. When she arrived, Julian apprised her of the situation and asked her to contact him if anything changed. After that, he and Jadzia had left.
Dax leaned heavily against him, still feeling like the world was spinning. He stopped at her quarters and she tapped the code in. She turned and smiled at him. "Thank you," she said.
Julian smiled and gestured towards the open door. "I could be wrong, but I don't think you could make it to the bedroom if I left you now." Dax smiled and sighed. He helped her in the room and she sank down on the bed. "Oh," she murmured, holding her head. "When will this take effect?"
"I don't know," he admitted, kneeling down in front of her. "Take tomorrow off," he said. Dax looked ready to protest but when she raised her head, her vision swam. She nodded slowly.
"Alright," she murmured. She felt his hand gently brush her cheek and she gazed up at him. He leaned in and kissed her tenderly. Dax closed her eyes and sank into his arms. After a moment, he pulled back. His mind was whirling with conflicting emotions. He gently brushed at a stray hair that had come out of her clip.
"Maybe I should go," he whispered. "Let you get some rest."
"No," she whispered. Julian started and Jadzia felt her cheeks heat up. "You don't have to. I'm not really tired. Not anymore." Julian's dark eyes searched hers. After a moment, he nodded hesitantly.
"Alright," he whispered. "I'll stay for a bit...." Dax smiled and sighed. She glanced at him.
"Well, if you don't mind, I want to get out of my uniform. Make yourself comfortable...." He smiled and got up. After the door had shut behind him, she quickly changed into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. She took the clip out of her hair and set it on the table next to her bed. After a moment, she stood up and walked out to the main room. Julian was studying the photos she had displayed on her shelf. He turned when he heard the door to the bedroom open and smiled. She concentrated on each step as she made her way over to his side. He quickly slid an arm around her waist when she reached him.
"Why don't we sit down," he suggested. She smiled and nodded. They sank down on the couch. Julian tightened his embrace on her and pulled her close. Jadzia lifted her chin and gazed at him. 'Gods she's beautiful,' he thought, tenderly brushing her hair back from her face. 'Why am I hesitating? Nothing has felt this right since Lara died.' Julian felt her hands slide around his back and he kissed her. He felt her press close against him and he found himself swept up into her touch. After a long moment, he pulled back slightly. She gently nuzzled him and he tenderly kissed her again. He gently deepened the kiss and felt her completely relax in his arms. Julian pulled her close, one arm encircling her waist and the other holding her shoulders.
Dax felt like she was in heaven. After several minutes, she pulled back. She reached up and brushed at his lips with her fingertips. She gazed up at him and smiled tenderly. He bent his head and gently nuzzled the corner of her neck.
"Maybe I'll stay a bit longer than I had planned," he whispered. Jadzia felt her heart pounding as he kissed her. She felt him press her back against the couch and she let out a tiny gasp of delight as he nipped at her neck.
"Sounds good to me," she whispered. Julian met her gaze and smiled. He lightly ran his fingertips along the line of spots on her neck. Dax smiled and reached up and drew his mouth to hers. She could hardly believe it when his commbadge chirped. Julian pulled back, regret apparent in his eyes.
"Bashir here," he said, struggling to keep the disappointment out of his voice.
"Doctor, I just thought you would want to know that Cati's fever is almost gone." Julian glanced at Jadzia and grinned.
"Thank you for contacting me. That is good news. If things change for the worse, though, let me know immediately."
"Of course, Doctor." Julian cut the connection and kissed Dax passionately. She let out a muffled squeak of surprise and he pulled back.
"What...what was that for?" she gasped.
Julian smiled and pulled her up into a sitting position. "I don't know. It just felt like the right thing to do." She giggled softly and shook her head.
"You're hopeless," she smiled. He grinned and pulled her close.
"Nothing has felt this right since Lara died," he whispered. "And it's been far to long since I've felt this good about anything." He tenderly ran his hands through her hair. She smiled and kissed him gently before standing up and pulling him with her. "What?" he asked quietly.
"Well," she grinned. "Unless I've been completely misreading you, I figure we might as well head for the bedroom while we still can." Julian burst out laughing and kissed her.
"What's wrong with the couch?" he asked.
"Not enough room," she murmured, pulling him towards the bedroom. Julian grinned and quickly lifted her into his arms.
"You'd better let me help you," he murmured. "You still look a little dizzy."
"Hmm," she smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I have a feeling that when I lie down, I'll be fine." Julian grinned back and headed towards the room.

Dax winced as the chronometer chimed. She sighed and opened her eyes and smiled. Julian's eyes were shut tight. She reached over and gently brushed at his cheek. He opened his eyes and glanced at her. "What time is it?" he asked.
"Oh, six thirty," she replied, smiling at him. "I take it you're not a morning person," she grinned.
Julian shook his head. "No, not really," he murmured.
"Hmm. That's a shame," she teased. He glanced up at her and grinned.
"You're hopeless," he smiled. Dax wrapped her arms around him and kissed the tip of his nose.
"Absolutely," she murmured. He grinned and kissed her, pressing her back onto the bed. "Hmm," she murmured contentedly as they broke apart. "I could get used to this," she smiled. He smiled and sighed.
"Unfortunately," he said, "I have to get to work. I want to check on Cati."
"I know. Am I still off-duty for today?" she asked. He nodded. "Absolutely."
"In that case, why don't I keep an eye on Cati for you," she said. "We'll probably both sleep most of the time anyhow."
Julian tenderly caressed her cheek. "What would I do without you?" he asked softly. She smiled and gave him a gentle push.
"Get going. You're going to be late otherwise." Julian kissed her quickly and got out of bed.
*******
"Hello Cati," he smiled. Wide awake at her usual time. That's a good sign.'
"Hi Papa," she chirped. He smiled and rested his hand on her forehead.
"Oh, you feel much cooler," he smiled. A part of him felt mildly guilty for not staying with her last night. I'll take tomorrow off and we'll spend the day together,' he thought. "How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Better," she said, reaching for him. He picked her up and held her.
"Well," he said, "let's see how much better." He sat her back down on the bed and picked up a tricorder. "You're fever's almost gone," he smiled. "Looks like you're going to be fine." Cati giggled. "And you have to be the most cheerful sick kid I know," he grinned picking her up and hugging her. "Well, let's take you home. Jadzia's going to be looking after you today. Is that okay?" Cati nodded. He smiled and he turned to the nurse that came in. "I'll be right back. I'm just going to take her home." She smiled and nodded. Julian walked out and headed back to their quarters. He was just passing Dax's quarters when she walked out. He smiled. "Hey. Thank you for offering to watch her today." Cati reached out and Dax took her.
"It's no problem. I've got nothing better going on today," she smiled. Julian grinned and kissed her.
"I'll see you later Cati," he said, placing a kiss on her cheek. "Be good." Julian glanced at Jadzia and smiled. "I'll stop back around lunch."
"Alright. Get going," she teased. Julian grinned and walked off. She followed him with her eyes and turned back to Cati. "Well, kiddo, let's get settled in." She walked the short distance to the quarters.

Julian studied the different vaccinations he had given Dax the other day. He was having a hard time explaining how the weak virus mutated from a dormant form to an active form, plus changing how it affected people. Dax had been complaining of headaches and dizziness and only had a slight fever. Cati had been burning up and hadn't complained of anything else. He leaned over the scanner and studied the affected monocyte. He was so absorbed in his work, he didn't hear Liam approaching. "Julian?"
He jumped and spun around. "Good God, Liam. Don't ever do that again!"
Liam chuckled. "Sorry. What are you working on so intently?"
"An incredibly talented virus," he replied, glancing at the data.
Liam raised an eyebrow. "Well, in that case, I know a good booking agent." Julian chuckled. "I'd ask what you're talking about but, chances are, I wouldn't understand."
Julian smiled. "What do you want Liam?"
"I was wondering where the hell you've been the last couple of days. We had a poker game last night but no one could contact you."
Julian smiled and glanced back at his work. "What time?" he asked.
"About 2400. It was later because Arnwar didn't get off work till then."
"What was he doing till 2400?"
"Oh, updating crew profiles. The usual. So where were you?"
"At 2400?" Julian paused. "Well, to be honest, I was with Commander Dax."
"Oh really?" Liam grinned.
"Liam," Julian sighed. "It's not what you think."
"No, it's exactly what I think," Liam grinned. "I haven't seen you look this happy since before Lara died. You can't tell me that that pretty science officer isn't the reason."
Julian smiled and shook his head. "Well...."
"Ah, ha! I knew it." Liam grinned. "I wish I had your luck!"
Julian laughed and shook his head. "It helps that Dax and I are old friends." He smiled at Liam. "Besides, what about Meleria? I know that you're interested in her."
"She's too busy mooning over *you* my friend! Or haven't you noticed?"
"Actually, I haven't," Julian replied, rasing his brows.
"Oh, you really have had your head buried in the sand, my friend," Liam said. "I'm glad you're returning to your old self."
Julian sighed. "It doesn't seem real, actually."
"Bet it did last night," Liam smirked. Julian cracked up. "Well, I've got work to do," Liam grinned.
"Thank God," Julian muttered, smiling. Liam nodded and walked out. Julian chuckled and turned back to his work.

Dax sat on the couch and scooped Cati up. "So, what story do you want to hear?"
"I dunno," she said. Dax smiled slightly.
"Well, I can't tell you a story if you don't tell me what story you want to hear." Cati gazed up at her. "What?" Dax asked. "Do you feel hot again?" She rested her hand on Cati's forehead. Cati shook her head.
"I'm hungry," she said. Dax glanced at the chrono.
"Well, Papa'll be home in a bit s
