Chapter 1

"I'm home!"

A rustling sound came from the bedroom. He could hear voices coming from there, too. Suddenly, a small figure sped out of it...well, sped as fast as toddling can take you. "Papa!" came the delighted exclamation.

Julian grinned and scooped the little girl up. "Hello, Glorita." She grinned and hugged him. "How about a kiss for your dad?" The little girl obliged by 'blowing' kisses at him. Julian heard footsteps approaching. He glanced towards the door. Jadzia stood there, leaning against the door. "Hello, love." She smiled and walked over. Gloria reached for her mom. Julian transferred the little girl and wrapped his arms around Jadzia and gently kissed her. "How was your day?" he asked.

"Oh, about the same. I did make some headway on the study I'm working on, though." Dax smiled at him.

"Hmm," he murmured, bending to kiss her again. She kissed him quickly and spun out of his arms. "What's wrong?" he asked, following.

"Nothing. Just let me set Gloria down." Jadzia secured the little girl in a jumper with a couple toys. She straightened up and turned to him. "Now," she smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Where were we?" Julian chuckled and kissed her tenderly. Dax sighed contentedly, sinking into his arms. After a long moment, they pulled away. Smiling, Jadzia rested her head against his chest. "Hmm. What else. Oh, your father called. He said he'd be stopping later on before heading to Bajor."

"What does he want?" Julian asked.

"I don't know. He really didn't say. I suppose he wants to see Gloria again before going. He'll be there for a couple weeks." Julian nodded, glancing at his daughter. So far, his father had been pretty good around Gloria. Julian still wasn't completely comfortable with him being around her, though. He felt Jadzia pull away, starting him out of his reverie.

"So," she asked. "When's dinner?"

Julian smiled. "Right. Dinner."

*******

An hour later, they were just sitting down to dinner when the door chimed. Julian sighed and got up. "Come in."

Michael Bashir walked in. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were eating. Should I come back later?"

"Will you have time later?" Jadzia asked, feeding Gloria.

"No, probably not," Michael admitted.

"Can I get you something?" Julian offered.

"No, no. I just stopped to show you this." Michael offered a PADD to Julian. "I thought you'd want to read it, seeing as it's your career and all." Jadzia glanced up and met Julian's eyes. Julian glanced back at the PADD and activated it. He read it quietly, his features unreadable. "Julian?" Jadzia asked. "What does it say?"

Julian glanced up briefly and turned back to the PADD. Dax frowned. Gloria sat quietly, not even banging on the table with the spoon in her hand. After a moment, Julian deactivated the PADD and glanced up. He met Jadzia's expectant gaze. After a long pause he said, "They're sending another doctor out." Dax's eyes widened in shock. "...to assist me," he finished. Jadzia froze for all of two milliseconds and broke into a broad grin. She got out of her chair and hugged him tightly. He smiled and hugged her in return. Michael smiled slightly at the couple and glanced at his granddaughter. She was contentedly chewing' on the spoon, watching her parents. He moved over to the little girl, who grinned at him. "So, Necheyev finally gave in?" he heard Dax ask.

Julian shook his head. "No, Star Fleet medical decided that there really *should* be two doctors here, being such a busy port and all. Necheyev had nothing to do with it. In fact, she protested the entire idea."

Jadzia grinned. "Typical. So, do you know who they're sending?"

Julian shook his head again, keeping an eye on Gloria and Michael. He was cheerfully playing with her, keeping her mind off the fact that she was hungry. "It didn't say." Jadzia grin broadened and she kissed him. "Let's just hope whoever it is isn't as green as you were when you first got here," she teased.

"Hey!" he protested, good naturedly. "Well, green or not, I *did* get that date with you." Jadzia chuckled. "That you did," she murmured and kissed his again. She glanced at Michael and looked at Julian. "We'll celebrate later," she whispered. Julian smiled.

"Well," Michael said, glancing up at the couple. "I suppose this is a relief."

"You could say that," Julian said. "Thank you for bringing this over."

"It was no problem. Besides, I needed an excuse to come see my favorite grandchild." Michael grinned at Gloria, who returned it.

Julian chucked at Gloria. "Little flirt. She grins like that to every guy she sees."

"I wonder who she takes after," Jadzia teased. Julian simply smiled indulgently. Michael chuckled.

"When's your transport?" Julian asked.

"Not for about an hour."

"Would you join us?" Jadzia asked, glancing up from Gloria.

"Thank you."

Dinner was cheerful. The conversation was light. Julian had to admit, he hadn't been this relaxed in a long time. After dinner, he placed the dished in the replicator and glanced over to where Michael, Jadzia and Gloria were sitting. Gloria was chewing on a teething ring and grinning delightedly as the adults entertained her. Julian smiled and watched. He had to admit, Michael was a different person than the father Julian remembered. Either that, or this was an elaborate scheme. Michael glanced up and sighed. "I'd better be going." He stood up. "I'll see you in couple weeks. Julian." Julian raised his chin slightly in acknowledgment. "Congratulations." Julian smiled and nodded his thanks. "Well," Michael said, crouching down. "I'll see you in a month, little girl. Be good." Gloria grinned and said, "Buh buh." Michael chuckled and stood up.

Jadzia smiled. "Have a good trip." Michael nodded and walked out.

Julian smiled and came up and sat down next to Jadzia and Gloria. "Hello, Glorita," he smiled. The little girl grinned. "Papa. Papa...." she continued for a minute or so. Julian smiled and wrapped his arm around Jadzia. She sank back against him. They played with Gloria for a while trying to wear her out. Julian glanced up. "Oh! Looks like it's time for someone's bed."

Gloria looked up and said, "No," with all the commanding forcefulness an eleven month old can muster.

"Yes," he said, scooping her up. Dax smiled and watched him carry her into the bedroom, listening to Gloria continue her mantra of "no"s all the way. She got up off the floor and got herself a coffee from the replicator. After about fifteen minutes, Julian walked out of the bedroom. "She asleep?" Dax asked. Julian nodded and sank down on the couch next to her. She smiled and set her coffee down. "So, you're getting an apprentice." Julian smiled and simply kissed her tenderly. Dax closed her eyes and leaned into the kiss. After a moment, he pulled away and glanced towards Gloria's room. "What do you say we go to bed?" he asked. Dax smiled and kissed him in response.

*******

Two weeks later, Julian stood at the airlock, awaiting the arrival of the new doctor. Star Fleet had sent him a brief summary of the doctor's work history. Julian was impressed. The airlock rolled open and several people walked out. It didn't take long to spot the Star Fleet uniform in the crowds of people. He straightened his shoulders and watched as the young doctor stepped out. "Dr. Wilkes?" he asked.

"Yes," came the warm response. "Dr. Leah Wilkes. You must be Dr. Bashir."

Julian nodded and extended his hand. "Call me Julian."

"In that case, call me Leah," she smiled.

"Well, Leah, if you'll come this way, I'll escort you to your quarters."

"Thank you," she replied. They walked quietly for a moment. Leah glanced at him and said, "So, what should I be expecting here?"

Julian glanced at her and smiled. "The unexpected," he replied, smiling slightly.

The young woman chuckled. "You always this cryptic, Julian?"

"Sorry," he chuckled. "Just a habit I picked up."

Wilkes smiled and shook her head. "Well, I suppose just as long as you aren't this way during work, I think we'll get along just fine." They both laughed. Julian stopped next to a set of doors. "Here you are." He hit the keypad and the door slid open. Wilkes walked in and glanced around. "As soon as you're settled in, come up to the infirmary and I'll show you around." She nodded. "Welcome to Deep Space Nine, Doctor," Julian smiled. The doors slid shut behind him as he walked out.

Wilkes glanced around the austere quarters and sighed. "It needs some work, but not bad," she murmured to herself. She set about to unpacking, setting some nicknacks on the shelves and hanging clothes up. After about a half hour, she decided to head up to the infirmary.

*******

Julian was leaning over tissue samples. "I always seem to be cataloging these tissue samples," he mumbled to himself.

"Well, that's what keeps the job interesting," came a voice from behind. Julian jumped and whirled around, phaser in hand. Leah ducked, her hands raised in a defensive posture.

"Oh! I'm sorry!" Julian exclaimed. He lowered the phaser and Wilkes straightened up.

"You usually keep a phaser in hand when you work?" she asked.

Julian frowned slightly. "Not in hand, no. Just close by." Wilkes eyes widened. Julian sighed. "Did Star Fleet brief you at all about the assignment?" he asked.

Wilkes glanced at him and then at the phaser still in his right hand. "Obviously not enough."

Julian nodded and walked into the storage room and returned with a hand phaser. "All Star Fleet and Bajoran officers are required to have one either on their person or near by at all times. The only person who is the exception to that is Security Chief Odo. You'll meet him later." Julian met her gaze. "With what's been happening with the Dominion lately, we're taking precautions." Wilkes nodded and took the phaser. Julian glanced around and smiled. "Well, I suppose you want to know where everything is."

"That would be nice," she replied, still a little shaken. Julian nodded and led her back into the main area just as Keiko O'Brien walked in, carrying Gloria and holding Kirayoshi's hand. "Keiko," Julian said, moving to her side. "What can I do for you?"

Keiko smiled and transferred Gloria to Julian and sat Kirayoshi on the medtable. Julian's eyes widened as he held Gloria. "She's running a fever," Keiko said, somewhat needlessly. "I thought it might be because she's teething, but it seems too high for that." Julian walked swiftly over to the table and sat Gloria down in it. He picked up a tricorder and scanned her. Wilkes studied the little girl carefully. She looked about a year old with curly dark hair and deep blue eyes. Most notable, however, were the line of spots than ran down the side of her face. "She's at least half Trill, isn't she?" she asked as Julian scanned her.

"Yes," Julian murmured, studying the results. "Fever of 99.3," he frowned and glanced further down on the tricorder. He smiled slightly. "Just a slight infection. We'll have this cleared up in no time, won't we Glorita?" The little girl just looked up at her father, wide eyed.

Wilkes moved closer. "You poor little thing," she said, trying to get the little girl's attention. 'Sometimes little kids are startled by the equipment,' she thought. She saw Bashir suppress a smile and neatly inject a hypo of antibiotics into the little girl.

"There we are. You'll be as good as new in a day or so. Mom's going to be fussing over you tonight, won't she?" This time Gloria smiled at her father. Keiko smiled. "Well, we should be getting back. We'll see you later." Julian nodded and transferred Gloria back to Keiko.

"Thank you for bringing her in," Julian said.

"Oh, it was no problem, Julian," Keiko smiled and walked out.

Julian watched them go for a moment and turned back to Leah. "I'm sorry. Where were we?"

"The tour."

"Right, well, this is the main area in the infirmary...."

Chapter 2

An hour later, the two doctors walked into the meeting room. "We have daily staff meetings. Mostly they deal with the current problems with the Dominion," Julian was explaining.

Wilkes nodded and glanced around as they entered. Bajoran, Klingon, Trill, Terran, and ... I'm not sure, probably the changeling. Odo, I believe,' she thought. Quite a mix.'

Sisko glanced up as Dr. Bashir walked in. He smiled at Wilkes. "You must be Dr. Wilkes," he said as Julian took his usual seat next to Dax. "I'm Captain Sisko. Welcome to DS9."

Wilkes smiled in return. "Thank you, Captain." Sisko turned to the rest of the senior staff and introduced Wilkes to them. "This is Dr. Leah Wilkes." There were nods of hello from around the table. "Doctor, this is Major Kira Nerys, my first officer. Lt. Commander Dax, my science officer. Lt. Commander Worf, Strategic Operations Officer. Security Chief Odo. Miles O'Brien, chief of Operations, and I believe you already know Dr. Bashir." Leah smiled slightly and nodded. "Take a seat, Doctor." She seated herself and the meeting got underway.

An hour later, Wilkes walked out, mildly stunned. The Fleet had told her this was an important post and it was a somewhat volatile area of space, but she had had no idea what exactly was going on. Now, she wished she didn't. "So, are you going to stay?" came voice from behind her. Wilkes spun around and found herself facing the Trill. "Commander Dax, right?"

Dax smiled and nodded. "I was just going on my lunch break. Would you care to join me?"

"Oh, I don't know if I should," Wilkes glanced over her shoulder at Dr. Bashir, who was talking to Captain Sisko about something. "I might be needed in the Infirmary."

Dax smiled and shook her head. "Julian," she called as he and the captain finished their discussion. He glanced up and smiled at her. "Is Dr. Wilkes' presence required in the infirmary or can she go to lunch with us?"

"Go ahead," he said. "I'll join you in a moment." Dax nodded and turned to Wilkes. She nodded and they headed off towards the Promenade.

"So," Wilkes inquired, "where's a good place to eat here?"

Dax smiled. "Well, it depends what you like. There's a Klingon restaurant here that's quite good. There's the Replimat, a couple other places and then there's Quark's," she said as they stopped in front of it. "This is probably a good place to start."

They walked in and sat down, saving a chair for Julian. They ordered drinks and sat in silence for a moment. "So," Wilkes said, "what should I know about DS9?"

Dax glanced at her. "Well, things are never normal around here. Quite the opposite, in fact. But, it's home right now. It takes an adjustment." Dax paused and smiled. "From the look on your face when you walked out of the meeting, you looked ready to repack and request a transfer."

Wilkes smiled, "Well, Star Fleet didn't quite tell me everything about this post."

"They usually don't," Julian responded, sitting down. "So, who's having what?"

Dax chuckled. "We haven't ordered yet. We were waiting for you."

"Really? How thoughtful," he smiled. Wilkes smiled and sipped her tea. A waiter appeared and took their orders and reappeared a minute later with Julian's tea. They had a rather companionable lunch, talking of station happenings. After finishing, Julian stood up and said, "Well, I hate to go, but I should get back and catalog the rest of those samples. I'll see you later." Wilkes started to stand but he shook his head. "Finish your lunch and then finish unpacking."

Wilkes started. "How did you know I hadn't finished?"

"Because no one can unpack in thirty minutes," Julian winked and headed off.

Wilkes stared at his back for a moment and then shook her head. Dax smiled, amused. Wilkes glanced at her. "What?"

"Nothing," Dax said, still smiling. Wilkes dismissed it and glanced out the door. "What can you tell me about him?" she asked.

Dax's eyebrows flew up. "Well, he's a good doctor. He's fair. He's not judgmental..."

"No," Wilkes flushed slightly. "I mean is he, well, involved with anyone?"

Dax paused for a moment. "Well, actually, yes." 'This is bloody ironic...he didn't tell her? Probably no time.'

Wilkes sighed. "With whom?"

Dax paused and then said, "Well, actually, with me. We're married."

Leah flushed bright red. "Oh, my god. I'm sorry. I didn't know..." She mentally cursed the fact that officers weren't allowed to wear any sort of jewelry, including wedding bands. It made things a lot more difficult.

Dax chuckled. "It's alright. No harm done."

"So, then, the little girl that was brought into the Infirmary was...."

"Our daughter," Dax nodded. Wilkes' blush deepened. Dax smiled. "Don't worry about it. You didn't know."

"Yes, but still." Wilkes paused and shook her head. She glanced at her empty plate and stood up. "I'd better finish unpacking."

Dax smiled. "Of course. Would you like to come over for dinner?"

Wilkes paused and then nodded. Regardless of what just happened, she needed to get to know people here. Plus, it didn't hurt to get to become friends with the boss.

"Great. How's 1900 sound?"

"That's fine," Wilkes smiled and excused herself.

Dax glanced back at her food and sighed. She got up. 'I still have about fifteen minutes before I need to be back in Ops. I'll check in and see how Gloria is.'

*******

Leah got back in her quarters and, when the doors closed, slowly hit her head against the wall. Real smart, Leah. You ask your boss's wife if he's unattached! Good going.' She sighed and started to unpack and organize. She was almost finished when an emergency comm call came. "Dr. Wilkes, report to the Infirmary. Medical emergency." Dropping everything, she headed out the door. 'Time to prove why you got this post, Leah.'

*******

Julian was up to his arms in patients. Sighing, he barked orders to the nurses and began triage. 'Another bloody mover. I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't sabotage.' He dismissed the thought as he got to work. "Where the hell is Wilkes?" he called to a nurse. She simply shrugged. Julian frowned and was about to tap his badge again when she rushed in the door. She caught his eye and flushed slightly and began working without a question. They had begun to get things under control when Jadzia rushed in, Gloria tucked neatly in her arms. Julian glanced up at her and she started to gesture for him. He was about to turn over the remaining work to a nurse when Leah breezed up. "I've got it. Go see what's wrong." Julian nodded gratefully and rushed over. "What's wrong?"

"I don't know," Jadzia answered. "I got an emergency comm call from Keiko asking me to come get her. She's burning up, Julian." Dax bit her lip, moving aside slightly so Julian could work.

"Hmm." He reached for a tricorder and began taking readings. Gloria sniffled pitifully and looked to be on the verge of tears. "Fever's gone up. It's at 101.6." Julian's brow tightened slightly. "I can't explain it. The antibiotics should be working." He reached for a hypo and gently pressed it against Gloria's neck. After being poked and prodded twice in one day and having received two shots and just not feeling well at all, Gloria burst into tears. "Oh, I know," Julian murmured, scooping her up. Dax moved over and gently brushed at her hair. "You should feel better in a bit." Gloria just continued crying, burying her face against her father's neck. Julian tilted his chin up and said, "I gave her an antihistamine. It should bring the fever down. I want to keep her here to run a few tests when she's calmed down though."

Jadzia nodded. "Alright. Let me know what happens." She paused. "Julian, off hand, what do you think is wrong?"

He reached and gently brushed her hand. "I don't know," he admitted. "I can't explain why the antibiotic didn't work. I'll know more later." She nodded and stood on tiptoe to kiss him. She gently brushed her daughters hair back and kissed her forehead. Dax walked out of the infirmary, glancing back a few times. Julian glanced down. "Okay, Glorita, let's get you settled." He took her into his office and settled her down in the back room on a blanket. "Get some sleep and I'll check on you later," he whispered. Gloria sniffed and let two crocodile tears fall. Julian paused, not wanting to leave. "Well, I suppose I could at least stay until you went to sleep," he murmured. He began gently brushing her hair off her forehead, calming her down. After the tears stopped, she began to prattle quietly. Eventually, she fell asleep. Julian stayed for about five minutes and then got up and headed back. Wilkes was standing there, taking readings from the last patient. She glanced up and asked, "How is she?"

Julian sighed. "I don't know. I'm going to run some tests after her fever comes down a bit and she's awake."

Wilkes nodded and turned back. "Well, if you want, sir, things are under control here. You could go and run a few now, while she's sleeping."

Julian shook his head. "No, she's too light a sleeper. Besides, I should check up on the patients."

Wilkes nodded and shut the tricorder. "Already done....sir."

Julian's dark eyes widened and he glanced around. "Well, there's always those tissue samples."

"Is there anything I can do?"

Julian paused and sighed. "Nothing at the moment. Just keep an eye on the few patients left." Wilkes nodded and started to arrange things neatly in their places. Julian shook his head and went back into his office. He sat down at his desk and glanced at Gloria, sleeping rather fitfully. He sighed and turned on the computer.

*******

Jadzia sat in Ops, waiting for Julian to call her. Things were slow up in Ops for once, so there was nothing to distract her from the fact that her little girl was running a high fever and Julian had no idea why she wasn't responding to treatment. Punching up some tedious data, Jadzia started pouring over the numbers, hoping to distract her.

"Looks interesting. Something wrong, old man?"

Dax glanced up at Captain Sisko. "What makes you ask that?"

"Because you've been avoiding this data like the plague for days now. What's wrong?"

She paused and sighed. "Gloria's sick," she began. Sisko nodded, understanding. "She's running a high fever and Julian doesn't know why. He thought it was a bacterial infection but she didn't respond to the antibiotic. He's going to run some tests as soon as her fever drops."

"Do you want to take the day off?"

"No. I'll be fine. I'm just waiting for Julian to call me to let me know what's happening."

Sisko nodded. "Alright." He paused briefly. "Let me know, too." Dax smiled at him and nodded.

*******

Julian was startled out of his work by a tiny wail. He glanced down and saw Gloria stirring from her nap. "Oh, love. It's alright." He got up and gently scooped her up. She felt a bit cooler, he noted with relief. "Let's see how you're feeling, huh?" She sniffed softly as he carried her out into the main infirmary. Wilkes glanced up as he came out. She had been familiarizing herself with the equipment, a strange Cardassian-Bajoran-Federation hybrid. She walked over to him. "How's she feeling?"

Julian sat her down on a biobed and picked up a tricorder. "Her fever's down...to 99.8 and it seems the antibiotic is finally taking effect." He smiled. "I guess it just takes longer for it to work with half Trills."

"Isn't there any records on this," Leah asked, smiling at the little girl.

Julian glanced at her sideways. "Doctor, how much do you know about Trill society?"

"Not much, admittedly. Why?"

Julian shook his head. Not wanting to go into details, he said, "Their society is structured in ways that there aren't many records on half Trills." He gently scooped Gloria up. "Now, what am I supposed to do with you?"

"Why don't you let me take care of her?" Leah suggested. He glanced at her. "I'm not officially on duty until tomorrow," she pointed out. "Besides," she admitted quietly. "I specialized in interspecies pediatrics at med school."

Julian paused and then nodded. "Alright. I'll pick her up around 1600."

Leah nodded and gently took Gloria from him. "I'll see you later, doctor." Gloria smiled at her and began chattering in her own little language. Julian watched them leave and then hit his commbadge. "Bashir to Dax."

"Go ahead," came the immediate response. Julian smiled. "I'm just letting you know that the tests weren't necessary. The antibiotics finally took hold."

"Thank you, Julian." Relief was apparent in her voice. "Where is she now?"

"Dr. Wilkes is watching her. I'm going to pick her up at 1600."

"Alright. Dax out." Julian cut communications and walked into his office. He sat down in front of the computer and began cataloging tissue samples.

Chapter 3

Leah Wilkes sank down on the floor with Gloria. "So, what to do until your dad comes and picks you up." Leah glanced through the bag that she had picked up from Keiko O'Brien. There were several toys in there so she pulled them out and set them in front of her. Gloria delightedly picked each one up and examined them by banging them around. Leah grinned. "You're quite even tempered for a sick child. Your parents are pretty lucky." Gloria glanced up at her and grinned. Leah chuckled. She entertained her for a while until she began to get fussy. "Getting tired?" She picked Gloria up and began to rock her, bouncing from her toes to her heels, walking around. "So, let's see. It's 1400. If you go to bed now, you should be up by the time your dad gets here." Leah sighed. "You know, I really made a fool out myself in front of your mom." Gloria chattered back sleepily, linking syllables and semi-intelligible words together. Leah grinned. "Well, enough of my talking. Computer, play selection Leah010." The computer began playing a soft lullaby. Leah walked over to her bed and gently lay Gloria down on it, pulling the pillows around her to keep her from rolling off. Gloria's eyes were drooping and by the time the first lullaby was over, she was sound asleep. Leah smiled and headed out into the main room. She let the selections play for a while. She was glad she had programmed these into the computer. She wasn't sure what use she'd have for them, but she liked to be prepared. 'Glad I'm doing something right.' Leah sat down and began to read a medical journal she subscribed to.

At 1605, the door chimed. Leah got up and answered it manually. Julian smiled. "You know, a simple come in does work here. I know it sounds strange."

Leah smiled. "I didn't want to wake Gloria up."

"She's sleeping? Well, I suppose that's a good thing." Leah led him into the bedroom. She watched a smile lite up his face as he gently picked his daughter up. Gloria stirred slightly but didn't wake completely. "I hope she wasn't too much trouble," he said quietly.

"Not at all. In a fact, she was a perfect angle," Leah responded, in sotto voce. Julian smiled as they walked back out. Leah neatly packed up Gloria's things and handed Julian the bag.

"Thanks again. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Actually, Commander Dax invited me over for dinner," Leah replied. "Unless you'd rather not..."

"Oh, no. It's no big deal. What time?"

"1900," Leah chuckled.

Julian smiled again and nodded. "I guess we'll see you then." He walked out. As the doors swished shut behind him her heard a slight thud. He paused and then shook his head and continued on his way.

*Thud* "Real smooth, Leah. Real smooth." *Thud* "Not that you have any reason to impress him personally. Why are you worrying? Hell, why are you talking to yourself?" *Thud* Leah sighed and gently massaged her forehead. "Well, might as well change into civvies."

********

"Hello!" Jadzia called.

"SHHHH!!!!" Julian came out of Gloria's room. "She's asleep," he explained, gently kissing Jadzia.

"Hmmm. Now?" Dax snuggled close to him.

Julian smiled into her dark hair. "Well, I guess today took its toll on her."

"Hmm. I suppose." After a long moment, Dax pulled away. "Oh, I invited Leah Wilkes over for dinner."

"Yes, she mentioned that," Julian smiled at his wife.

Dax smiled slightly, remembering exactly *why* she ended up inviting Leah over. "What's so funny?" Julian asked.

"Um, well nothing really. It's just that your new doctor asked me today about your, um, availability."

Julian glanced at her and raised an eyebrow. "You're kidding me?!"

Dax shook her head. "No. She was mildly surprised to find out that your were married and that she was asking your wife about it."

Julian chuckled softly. "Oh, I suppose she was embarrassed."

"For a while. She recovered gracefully, though." Dax glanced at the chronometer. "Well, if we're going to have company, you're either going to have to prepare dinner or clean."

Julian grinned. "I'll take dinner."

"Slouch," Jadzia teased.

*******

Leah glanced at her reflection as she passed a reflective surface on her way to dinner. Her brown hair was neatly pulled up away from her face. She was wearing a simple pants suit, loose cut but flattering for her tall frame. Not bad,' she reflected. Even if he's spoken for, it doesn't mean you can't look good.' She tapped the door chime and the door slid open to reveal Dax smiling. "Hello," Leah said.

"Leah, come in," Dax replied warmly. Julian glanced up from his spot on the floor next to Gloria and smiled. "Hello Leah. Glad you could make it."

"Thank you for inviting me," she replied. "How is she?" she asked, nodding towards Gloria.

"Better," Dax replied. "Her fever is almost gone and she slept for at least another hour after she got home so she's in a good mood. Which reminds me, thank you for looking after her this afternoon. It was much appreciated."

"Oh, it was no trouble," Leah glanced around the room. It was neatly arranged, furniture arranged neatly to accommodate comfort and conversation and utilitarian needs. A few small items lined the shelves and some photos of them were displayed. 'A typical family's quarters.'

"Make yourself comfortable," Dax said, interrupting her thoughts. "Can I get you something to drink?"

"No thank you," Leah responded, sitting down on the couch near Julian and Gloria. Gloria looked up and smiled happily at Leah and stretched her arms out. "Up!" she demanded. Leah obliged, picking the little girl up. Gloria smiled and her attention was caught by the necklace Leah wore.

"She's really taken to you," Julian chuckled. "She's usually pretty wary of strangers."

Leah smiled and tried to extract her necklace from Gloria's grip. "Well, years of training helps a bit."

Jadzia smiled as she walked over, a cup of tea in her hands. "Julian mentioned that you specialized in interspecies pediatrics."

Leah nodded, finally managing to wrestle her necklace from Gloria. "I came from a large family. It just seemed like a logical decision."

"That's a beautiful necklace. What is it?"

Leah glanced up, surprised. "A Celtic cross. I'm part Irish," she replied. "I'm surprised you've never seen one." Dax shrugged her shoulders elegantly as if to say 'It's a big galaxy.'

"You're Irish?" Julian asked.

Leah nodded. "About 35 percent. I'm about 50 percent German decent and the rest is a mix of French, Polish and Native American." Julian raised an eyebrow and how she easily recanted that. She noticed this and smiled. "I have an extensive family tree that dates back to about 1790. I'm in charge of maintaining it. I have a wall display of it in my quarters here and a working copy on my computer. I'm still trying to research further back. It's not easy though."

They chatted comfortably for a while. Leah relaxed more around them. It was obvious to her now that they were quite in love. I can't believe I missed this earlier. Oh, well.' She was attempting to gain a personal profile of them. Julian seemed quite open and honest. Leah felt that they'd get along fine. Dax was a bit harder to dissect. She seemed open and friendly and looked like she enjoyed a good joke and was usually the person who pulled it in the first place. But there was a bit of enigma surrounding her. Must be a trait of joined Trills, having all those lives,' Leah thought. The eventually drifted over and had dinner, all the while talking. Leah began to realize that maybe this wouldn't be such a bad post after all.

After dinner, Julian sat down at the computer and reviewed Leah's personnel file. Born in the Midwest. Chicago to be exact. Her family moved around a lot before settling in St. Louis. The second youngest of five children. Applied to Star Fleet Medical immediately after her secondary education. Immediately declared her specialty in interspecies pediatrics. Graduated third in her class. This was her second posting, her first being on the U.S.S Crazy Horse. Several commendations from the CMO and her CO. "So," came a voice. "You going to keep her?"

He turned and saw Dax standing over his shoulder smiling. "Absolutely. She's a good doctor. I'd be a fool to send her packing."

Dax slid her arms around his shoulders. "Hmmm. Well that's good." She kissed the top of his head. "Coming to bed?" she asked.

"Yes," Julian turned off his terminal. He stood up and wrapped his arms around her waist. "You only need mention the word."

Dax chuckled and kissed him gently. "C'mon. It's late." Julian smiled as she gently pulled him towards the room.

Leah sat in her quarters, some old earth jazz playing quietly. She neatly typed away at her computer journal. She kept a separate journal, one completely hidden from her personal log. She really didn't like recording her upmost secrets on it. It could be searched easily. She recorded the cursory information in it and kept the details in her journal. She sighed and turned the computer off. She glanced around her new quarters. Definitely different from the comfort of a starship, but I think I'll like it here.' She smiled, remembering dinner. She had really begun to get along with both Julian and Dax. And Gloria was simply adorable. They had gone out of their way to make her feel comfortable here on her first day. She appreciated it. She glanced at the chronometer. 2500. "Better get some rest." She changed into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and sank down onto the bed. She had no sooner closed her eyes when the station rattled from top to bottom. "What the bloody hell..." she muttered as it shook again. She stumbled out of bed and got into her uniform. She headed out of the door and went to the infirmary. 'If we're under attack, which is the only thing I can think of to cause a whole space station to shake, then there's going to be injuries.'

Chapter 4

"Infirmary to Bashir."

"Go ahead," he said, picking up one of the regulation phasers he and Jadzia kept securely locked up. He tossed the other to Jadzia, who slipped it into its holster.

"You're needed in the infirmary, doctor."

"I'm on my way. Did you page Doctor Wilkes?"

"She's on her way."

"Good," Julian said. Jadzia rushed out, Gloria in her arms to drop off at the O'Brien's a few doors down. Julian rushed off towards the infirmary. People were already there. Leah strode up to one and competently scanning the patient with a tricorder. "Report," Julian said briskly.

"Seventeen reported casualties so far, nine of which are here. Most are from the first volley," Wilkes replied, just as briskly, not bothering to look up. Julian nodded and dove into work. 'Mostly bumps, bruises and cuts of varying degrees of severity. An occasional concussion,' Julian thought, moving from patient to patient. He managed to keep his balance as the station shifted around them. He considered calling Ops to find out what the hell was going on but they had their hands full.

Wilkes picked herself up, mildly embarrassed that she fell but it seemed she wasn't the only one who lost her balance. "What was that?!" she asked Julian.

"I have no ide...."

"Medical emergency in Ops. Drs. Bashir and Wilkes respond."

The doctors exchanged a glance and rushed out, pausing only to pick up medkits.

*******

"Report!" Sisko shouted.

"Shields weakening!" Work boomed back, invisible through the smoke. "Down to 45%. However, the Cardassians are in worse shape. Their lead ship has virtually no shields and the other two are down to 15%."

Sisko cursed and pressed his hand against the wound on his arm. Damn Gul Dukat!' he thought just as Dr. Bashir and Dr. Wilkes stepped out of the lift. Julian immediately moved to Sisko. The doctor immediately set to work. "Worf, disable both ships warp drives and weapons capability. I want them to limp back into Cardassian space." Bashir finished with Sisko and moved on to another Lieutenant. Wilkes was presently working on Kira, who had been slightly caught in a panel explosion. Sisko saw the volley of phaser fire streak out to the two Cardassian ships. "Warp drive and weapons capability inoperative on both ships."

"Good shooting Mr. Worf. Dax, hail them. I want them to take a message back to Gul Dukat for me." No response. "Dax?" Sisko turned around as Julian lifted his head towards the science console and Wilkes gasped, "Oh, gods!"

"Jadzia!" Julian cried as he rushed over. She was slumped on the ground, unconscious and bloody. Sisko watched as Bashir scanned her, visibly fighting back panic. Wilkes moved over as he paled. "I need to get her to the infirmary now!"

"Worf!" Sisko said, about to tell him to transport them to the infirmary. But no sooner as the single word was out of his mouth than the two disappeared in a shimmer of blue light.

Wilkes stood silently for a moment, in complete shock. She was about to head to the infirmary when she realized that there were still people here that needed help. She began to work again, her professional demeanor slipping back in place. She competently healed burns and cuts, all the while her mind was wondering what was happening. When Ops looked to be under control, she glanced at Sisko. He was just cutting communications with the Cardassian task force. He turned violently. "Major, you're with me." The two of them headed for the lift. Wilkes darted across Ops and stepped in. "Things are under control here sir. I'm needed in the infirmary."

"No one questioned you, doctor. Promenade." The lift began to move and when it reached the Promenade, Wilkes took off for the infirmary. She entered and glanced around. The nurses were struggling to keep up with the influx of patients. Wilkes glanced around. She didn't see Julian or Dax anywhere. "Doctor!" Wilkes glanced up and saw a nurse motion to her. Wilkes headed over and began to work. By the time that things were under control, she still hadn't seen Julian anywhere. Sisko and Kira walked in from the entranceway where they had remained. "Where's Doctor Bashir?" Sisko asked. "I need to talk with him."

"I don't know," Wilkes said. "I've been too busy here. I'd wager he's in ICU" She headed over to it. "Wait here a moment, sir." Sisko nodded and Leah walked in. Julian stood next to a biobed, staring at the display. He didn't seem to be reading it though. "Doctor?" Leah ventured.

Julian spun, startled. "Yes?" Leah didn't miss the expression on his face though before the mask slipped into place. Or the fine sheen of tears in his eyes. "How is she?" Leah asked quietly. Julian paused and then simply gestured to the readout. Leah glanced at him and then read the screen. Second degree burns on hands and forearms, severe concussion, broken wrist. Those were the lightest injuries. There had been internal bleeding which had been repaired. The Dax symbiont was in a state of shock, neural functions at a minimum. Leah didn't know too much about Trill physiology, but what she saw didn't look good. She glanced back at Julian. She had no idea what to say. He simply stood there. After a moment, he moved and picked up an osteo-dermal regenerator and began working on Jadzia's broken wrist. "Julian," Leah said quietly. "Captain Sisko wants to speak with you as soon as possible."

Julian glanced up at her and nodded. "Send him in."

Leah moved towards the entrance and signaled to Sisko to come in. As soon as he caught sight of Jadzia, he stopped short. After a moment, he asked, "How is she, doctor?"

Julian didn't glance up as he recanted Jadzia's injuries. He seemed to be struggling to keep his composure. "All in all, sir, she's not in good shape. It'll be a few days before she's out of the woods."

Sisko glanced at the doctor. "What are her chances of survival?" He hated to ask him these questions but he needed to know.

Julian paused and then glanced up. "About 55 percent." Sisko heard Wilkes draw in a sharp breath. Sisko paused and nodded. "Keep me informed, doctor." Bashir nodded and bent his head again. Sisko started out the door and then paused. "Doctor, she's going to be fine. You know as well as I do that she beats the odds every time." Julian glanced up again and smiled thinly. Sisko nodded and walked out. Time I had a little chat with Dukat in person.'

Julian glanced back at Jadzia. He could feel his control slowly slipping. He heard a soft shuffling sound and glanced up. Leah Wilkes stood there, looking shocked and slightly uncomfortable. "Is there anything I can do for you, Leah?"

"I was just about to ask you the same question."

Julian smiled dryly. "No. I'll be fine. As soon as I get my hands on those damn Cardassians." He glanced back at Jadzia and gently brushed his hand over hers. He heard Wilkes shift again and duck out. Julian sighed. "Don't you dare give up on me," he whispered. He swallowed thickly and blinked back tears.

*******

"Doctor?" Julian shifted slightly. "Doctor Bashir?" He felt a hand on his shoulder and he spun around in the chair. He saw Leah standing there. Where the hell...oh. Right.' Julian glanced numbly at Jadzia's still form. I must have fallen asleep.' "What can I do for you?"

"There's someone here to see you," Wilkes said. Julian sighed and managed to tear himself away from Jadzia's side. He walked out into the main infirmary area. It had cleared out for the most part. A few patients remained but other than that it was empty except for..... "PAPA!!!!" came the cry. Julian snapped his head towards the cry and practically sprinted over. He scooped Gloria up into his arms and she immediately began to cry. "It's alright, love. It's okay," he whispered consolingly. The little girl just buried her face against his chest and pressed the top of her head under his chin. Julian walked into his office, trying to comfort the terrified child. He sank down onto the couch in the back room, forgetting about Leah. Right then all that mattered was calming down Gloria. "It's okay," he whispered, gently brushing her hair back. "You're safe now." He kept up the soft consoling stream until she calmed down a bit. Julian closed his eyes and thanked all the gods in the universe that she was alright.

Leah stood in the doorway of the office, watching them for a moment. Julian was sitting on the couch, holding Gloria as if his life depended on it. His eyes were shut tight and he continued to comfort the little girl. Leah quietly backed out and turned to Keiko who simply smiled, nodded and walked out. Leah sighed and leaned against the wall. After a moment, she stood up straight and began checking on the patient's vitals. That took all of five minutes. Sighing, she walked into ICU. Dax lay there, looking calm and peaceful. Leah glanced at the computer screen. Things had somewhat improved. Her broken hand and burns had been healed. She was no longer bleeding internally. The symbiont's vitals hadn't changed much, though. Leah frowned. She wasn't sure what to suggest. Part of the reason she had been assigned to this post was her diagnostic skills and her ability to suggest a course of action. However, she was completely baffled. If there was one thing that she hated was not knowing what to do. She sat studying the numbers until she heard a soft sound coming from the door. She glanced up and saw Julian standing there. His face was drawn and he looked exhausted. "Leah," he said. "Find anything?"

She shook her head. "Afraid not. The only thing I can think of is just letting nature take its course for now. I wouldn't dare risk a neural stimulator on the symbiont. Not yet anyways." Julian nodded. "Doctor, you look like death warmed over," Leah said. "There's nothing either of us can do here right now. Why don't you get some sleep."

Julian glanced at her and nodded. "I suppose. I should get Gloria back to our quarters." He sighed. He wanted nothing more than to just stay here with Jadzia, but he needed to think about Gloria. "You'll let me know if anything changes?"

"Of course." Julian nodded and walked out. He gathered up Gloria and headed back to the quarters. He sank down on a chair in the main room, still holding Gloria. He didn't want to let her go, afraid that if he did, she'd disappear. He closed his eyes and sighed softly. Gloria stirred slightly. Julian remained still until she fell into a deep sleep. Julian closed his eyes and fell into a dreamless sleep, cradling her in his arms.

Chapter 5

He was woken up by a gentle patting on his cheek. Julian smiled and cracked open one eye. Gloria was studying him carefully. When she saw him smile, she grinned and started blowing kisses. Julian gently hugged her. "Good morning," he said, trying to remain cheerful. The events of last night were still the foremost thoughts on his mind. He found it a little difficult to keep up the facade for Gloria's sake. He gave her a kiss. "So, what should you have for breakfast?" Julian stood up and walked over to the replicator and ordered cereal for her. Jadzia usually gets her ready in the morning. She says she likes the quiet time spent with Gloria.' Julian immediately pushed the thought away. However, Gloria also knew the routine and started scanning the room. "Mama?" Julian swallowed hard. "Mom's not here right now, Glorita." She simply looked at him wide eyed. Julian sighed softly and sat her down. "Why don't you eat your breakfast and then you can go over to the O'Brien's to play with Kirayoshi and Molly." Gloria brightened at the mention of Kirayoshi and Molly. Amazing what they register and what they don't,' he mused.

After dropping Gloria off with Keiko, Julian headed to the infirmary. He found Leah Wilkes there, looking ready to drop. She smiled wanly at him as he walked in. "Morning."

Julian glanced around and asked, "Anything exciting happen?"

"No. Most of the patients have been released. And there was no change in Dax's condition."

Julian sighed and smiled thinly. "Go get some sleep, Doctor. You look dead." Leah simply nodded and walked out. Julian checked over the remaining patients and then headed into ICU. He paused slightly in the doorway and then forced himself to remain clinical. He walked over and began to scan the readouts. Jadzia's wounds were healing nicely but Dax still wasn't any better. Julian frowned and called up a detailed scan on the symbiont. He studied the numbers for a moment. "It almost looks like Dax is doing this itself," he muttered. Julian's frown deepened. It was theoretically possible that Dax had cut all neurological activity to a minimum to protect itself when Jadzia was injured. In fact, Julian was willing to wager that it was self-preservation. However, if Dax didn't begin to come out of it soon, neither would survive. Julian hesitated and asked the computer what the chance of the symbiont's survival if removed from Jadzia within 12 hours. "Eighty-five percent." Julian was beginning to feel sick to his stomach. Not that it would do Dax a bit of good. It can't be rejoined.' Julian sighed. He glanced at Jadzia's vitals and decided that she was well enough to risk using a stimulant on Dax. Julian hoped that it would help shock the symbiont out of its catatonic state and Jadzia wouldn't be the worse for wear by it. Julian picked up a hypo and gently injected in into the symbiont's pouch. He watched the readings carefully. There was a spike in neural activity for a moment and then it settled back down at a slightly higher level than it had been at. "Well, it works, but only slightly. I can't keep doing that until it wakes up, though," Julian mumbled. You're talking outloud to yourself again,' he thought and smiled slightly. Time to consider other options.' He went into his office and began to work.

*******

Seven hours later, Leah walked back into the infirmary. She glanced around. All the remaining patients from last night were gone and Julian was no where to be seen. "Julian?" she called.

"In here," came the response. Leah walked into the lab and found Julian studying some numbers. He glanced up. "What do you make of this?" he asked. Leah walked over and looked at the screen. It displayed the neural activity for the symbiont. "It's higher," she commented. "That's a good sign."

"Yes," Julian snapped slightly. He shook his head. "Sorry. Now look at this." He punched a button and the screen changed slightly. Leah leaned in. "When's this from?"

"From when I first scanned her."

"Damn," Leah hissed and then glanced at him. "Self-imposed for survival?"

"As far as I can tell. I figured that out after you left."

"Well, then all we have to do is wait until Dax feels its safe."

Julian shook his head. "No. It's not quite that easy. If Dax doesn't pull out of this within five hours, rejection will start to set in." He punched another key. "The scan that I showed you was six hours ago. This is the most recent." Leah studied it. "It's about 40% higher than the last scan, which puts total neural activity at 60%."

Julian nodded. "At this rate, it will take Dax at least seven hours more to recover."

"And we only have five." Leah paused. "Have you tried a neural stimulant?"

Julian nodded. "It only raised neural activity by 5 percent."

"Which would mean about 8 injections within five hours." Leah shook her head. "That won't work. So what do we do now?"

Julian studied the computer for a moment and then turned to Leah. "Now we wait."

*******

Four hours later, Julian was pacing the ICU. There had been no change in the readouts. Jadzia couldn't or wouldn't respond to him. Gods please let her be alright,' he begged. He waited as the minutes ticked by. An hour later, Leah walked in. "Any change?"

"No."

Leah paused. "Julian, Keiko O'Brien is here with Gloria. I told her that you were busy but..."

Julian looked up. "No. I'll be right there." Leah nodded and walked out. Keiko stood up when she came out. "He'll be right here," Leah told her. Keiko nodded and bounced Gloria. After a moment, Julian walked out. He smiled at her slightly. "What can I do for you Keiko?"

"Julian. I'm sorry to stop by. I know you're busy but I thought that..." Keiko cleared her throat. "That, just in case, you might want Gloria to, well, spend some time with...."

Julian nodded slowly, understanding. "Thank you, Keiko." He reached and gently pulled the little girl into his arms. She stared at her father. Julian could see the confusion in her blue eyes. He smiled tightly.

"Julian?" He glanced up. Keiko reached and rested her hand on his arm. "I'm sure she'll be fine."

Julian smiled wanly. "Thank you, Keiko. I mean it." Keiko smiled sympathetically and walked out. Julian glanced at Gloria. "Little one, there's something I need to tell you...." Leah watched Julian walk into his office. She sighed. She started to needlessly straighten some instruments when she heard alarms going off. Her head snapped up and she darted into ICU. She heard Julian curse and start after her. Leah reached the bed and began scanning. Julian entered a few moments later, Gloria held tight in his arms. The little girl snapped her curly head towards the bed and began to cry. Leah glanced up and started over. "Here. I'll take her." Julian neatly turned Gloria over to her and Leah walked quickly out. Julian glanced at the readout. Dax's neural activity was jumping all over the board. Julian's mind froze temporarily. He'd never seen anything like this. A split second later, he set to work, trying to make sense of the reading and to try and stabilize her. But as soon as the alarms started they stopped. Julian glanced up and the diagnostic above the bed and back to screen. His eyes widened. Dax's neural patterns were approaching normal levels. Julian's eyes widened. His hands flicked deftly over the controls and scanned Jadzia with a tricorder. Everything was fine. Julian grinned, feeling tears of joy well up. "Doctor?" Julian spun around. Leah was standing there, gently bouncing Gloria. Gloria was still crying, pleading for her mom. Leah took a step back when she saw Julian wipe the tears away. "She's not...."

"No. No she's fine." Julian grinned for the first time in a day. "Take a look," he said, gently taking Gloria. He calmed her down, quietly telling her that mom was alright and that everything would be okay. He watched Leah study the readouts and raise her eyes to his. She smiled, relieved. Gloria's tears were reduced to sniffles by that point. "Looks like you were right," she said. "Dax pulled back on its own in self-preservation."

Julian nodded. "It waited until Jadzia's injuries were almost healed. The alarms were because Jadzia's body had to adjust to the sudden influx of Dax's thoughts." He walked over and set Gloria down on the bed. She started to crawl over to Jadzia but Julian pulled her back. "Not yet," he told her. The little girl began to sniffle again. Julian smiled. "When mom wakes up, alright?" Gloria nodded solemnly.

Leah smiled and quietly stepped out, leaving them be for the moment. She had just started to organize things again when Captain Sisko entered. "Doctor. How is Commander Dax?"

"She's going to be fine sir. Things just evened out a moment ago. Dr. Bashir is in there now."

Sisko nodded. "Well, tell him that I'll be back later to see how things are." Leah nodded her affirmative.

*******

Julian sat on the corner of the bed. Jadzia stirred slightly and opened her eyes. "Julian...." He smiled softly. "How do you feel?"

Jadzia winced. "Like a panel exploded in my face," she said. Julian helped her sit up. She leaned back against the wall and glanced at him and noticed Gloria balanced on his knee. "Hey," she whispered. Gloria smiled and reached her arms out. Julian transferred Gloria to her. Jadzia gently hugged the little girl. "What happened?"

Julian paused and said, "I'll tell you later. Sufficed to say, you gave us all quite a scare." Jadzia smiled and reached for his hand. Julian covered her hand in his. Jadzia smiled slightly and glanced at Gloria, who was sitting on her lap. Julian let out a shaky sigh of relief. Jadzia gazed at him and reached up and cupped her hand behind his neck, pulling him close. Julian pulled her into his arms and kissed her tenderly. After a moment, they pulled apart. Julian shifted around so he was sitting behind her. He wrapped his arms around her and Gloria. Dax sighed and sank back against him. Gloria happily chattered to the both of them.
