Chapter 1
Dax stared at the message and sighed. Julian walked in. "What's wrong?"
She looked up. "It's from Trillian telling me to report back for my Disgrace."
Julian's features sobered. "When?" he asked.
"Three days."
Julian gazed at her. "When do we leave?"
"As soon as possible. I've already called Benjamin about it. He wishes us luck." Julian nodded and sighed too. Things have been so stressful lately, what with the Klingons now. We've hardly had any time for each other and now this.' He realized she was saying something and flushed. "I'm sorry, love. What was that?"
"I said we're lucky they kept letting us push this back as far as we have. I knew they wouldn't wait forever but...." Dax sighed. She'd be lying if she said she wasn't nervous about this whole thing. She didn't regret anything and knew she'd do it all over again in a heartbeat, but it was still difficult. She felt his strong arms encircle her waist and pull her close. She leaned heavily against him. "It's alright, love," he murmured. "We'll get through this." She smiled slightly and nodded against his chest.
*******
"Rubicon to Ops."
"Go ahead."
"Requesting permission to depart."
"Permission granted. Good luck, Dax."
"Thank you, Ben." Dax piloted the runabout away from the station and set a course for the Trill homeworld. She put the runabout on autopilot and sighed. She felt his hands close on her shoulders and squeeze gently. She smiled and tilted her head forward. "My, we're tense," Julian said.
"Hmmm. Keep that up and I might just keep you," she replied. He grinned and continued to massage her shoulders. "So, what should I expect when we get there?" he asked.
"Well, there won't be any red carpets being rolled out for us, I can tell you that much."
"No kidding."
"Well, we'll both be ignored mostly. As far as many joined are concerned, I'm dead. Or at least not recognized to be on their level. You," she paused. "You might receive some hostilities from some of the more conservative people."
He nodded. "What about the meeting in front of the board?"
Dax shook her head. "You won't be involved in any way. In fact, if you say anything, it will just get you thrown out." She sighed. Julian gently pulled her up out of her seat. "Come on."
"What?"
"You're going to get some sleep. You haven't gotten a decent nights sleep in days. I know cause you keep kicking me." She smiled slightly. He pulled her into one of the cabins. "Get about four hours sleep and then eat something. Doctor's orders." He bent and kissed her gently. She tenderly brushed her fingers across his lips and walked inside. He smiled and went back up front.
*******
They arrived near her mother's house in a shimmer of blue energy. People around glanced at them, but didn't say anything. They mostly went on about their business. Some, however, shot knowing looks their way. Julian sighed. They headed off towards her house. "The only place where I'll really be accepted on Trillian" she had said. Julian looked around. They were in a small neighborhood, not too well off, but the people seemed kind, towards others. As she had said, they were effectively being ignored.
"DAX!" They both looked up to see her sister trotting towards them. Jadzia smiled slightly and cast a glance in Julian's direction just as she was crushed in a hug. "Gods, you look wonderful. It's so good to see you again! Hi Julian." He smiled at her. She glanced around. "I suppose you want to get settled in."
"That would be nice," Dax smiled. The followed her to the house and she led them to the upstairs apartment. Dax glanced at Julian. "It's not much, but it's home."
"Mom's out of town visiting a friend," her sister said. "She said you two could have her bedroom. I'd better get back to my apartment, though. I'll see you a later?"
"Of course." They hugged again and she left. Dax glanced at Julian. "This way." She led him into a smallish bedroom. She set her duffel down and sank down on the bed. He looked at her critically. "Don't say it, love. I know I look terrible."
Julian sighed and sat down on the bed, leaning against the head board. "Come here," he said, reaching for her. She slid over to him and he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, gently pulling her against his chest. Dax sighed and closed her eyes, resting her head against his chest. He gently let his hand run up and down her arm, knowing that it usually helped her to relax. She sighed contentedly. "If you keep that up, I'm liable to fall asleep."
"That's the idea," he murmured in her ear. "Get some rest."
She sighed. "I slept enough on the runabout."
"It doesn't show." Dax sighed again. There could be no arguing with him sometimes.
*******
She woke up some time later and looked around. Their clothes were hung up and their duffels were stowed in the closet. She smiled and sat up, wondering where he went. She got out of bed and went to look for him. She found him in the living area, stretched out on the couch, reading something. "Hello," she said, walking up behind him.
He tilted his head back and smiled at her. "Morning," he teased, sitting up. She sank down next to him. He leaned over and kissed her gently. "How do you feel?"
"Better," she admitted. "What time is it?"
"It's about 1900." Dax's jaw dropped. She had slept for over six hours. "You didn't expect me to wake you, did you?" he smiled wryly. "Tomorrow's your big day, after all."
"Yes, but now I won't sleep at all tonight." Dax glanced at him.
His smile changed again. "Well, I could say that was part of the plan," she grinned at him in return, "but that's not true."
"Hmm. Why not? I've missed you." She leaned in closer, wrapping her arms around his neck, gently entwining her fingers into the short curls at the nape of his neck. He smiled at her and they kissed. Dax sighed in delight. They had both been so busy lately, they had been lucky to see each other at all. She pressed against him, deepening the kiss. He responded by gently pulling her down onto the couch. "I've missed you, too," he whispered.
*******
Julian closed his eyes at the bright sunlight streaming in the window. After a moment, he gave in and glanced around. They were in her mother's modest bedroom. Julian glanced at where the chronometer was. 0800. He glanced at Jadzia. She was sleeping, curled up next to him, her arm wrapped around him. He smiled slightly. He hated to wake her. She really did need her sleep. Like last night helped,' he thought and grinned. Well, it might not have helped her fatigue, but it helped us.' After a moment, he gently shook her. "Jadzia. Wake up, love." She mumbled something incoherent and shook her head. He sighed. "Come on, it's 0800." She sighed and shifted slightly. "We don't have to be there until 1130. Let me sleep." Julian sighed. "Alright. I'll wake you up at about 1000." She nodded and let him up. He gently leaned over and kissed the corner of her mouth. She smiled slightly and kissed back. He grinned and headed for the shower.
Dax sighed and rolled over, trying to get out of the direct sunlight. She was tired, but not nearly as fatigued as she had been, physically and emotionally. She sighed. As much as she loved Julian, she wasn't sure how she was going to react today. She took a deep breath, trying to calm the fear that filled her lately whenever she thought of the implications of what was going to happen. Dax would die with her. That thought chilled her to the bone. She sat up. I'm not going to get any more sleep.' She got up and pulled on a robe and set about to making breakfast.
Ten minutes later, Julian stepped out of the shower and toweled off. He wrapped the towel around his waist and walked into the bedroom, expecting to see Jadzia sleeping. Instead, the bed was empty and there were sounds coming from the kitchen. Julian pulled on a robe and walked out. Jadzia stood at the small stove, making scrambled eggs. She had a distant look on her face, worried and scared were the predominant emotions crossing her face. Julian walked over to her and gently wrapped his arms around her waist. "Want to talk about it?"
Dax started and glanced at him and took the pan off the stove. "What's to talk about that we haven't discussed already?"
Julian sighed into her soft hair. "Jadzia. Please. You've been distant and haven't been sleeping well lately. I know that this is upsetting." He heard her stifle a comment and frowned. In a fluid movement, he turned her around to face him. She looked into his eyes for a moment and he saw fear flitter through them for a moment before she managed to control her emotions. He studied her for a long moment. She didn't say anything. Julian sighed. "Why are you so scared? Talk to me."
She pulled away. She wanted to tell him everything, but she wasn't sure he'd understand. This had always been the largest barrier between them. She turned and looked out a window. "How do you manage?" she finally asked. "Knowing that you only have one life, how do you deal with that? There's so many things to do and not enough time to do it. I..." her voice broke and she stopped. He walked over and gently placed his hands on her shoulders. "I wasn't expecting to have to deal with this for another couple hundred years. I'm scared, Julian." He gently held her for a moment. "Oh, love. I don't know what to tell you. I don't think anyone really does everything they want to, one life or ten." He gently slid his arms around her shoulders. "As for how I manage, I just do. I never had to rely on the fact that I'd live on after I die. At least not how you would." He felt tears gently splash on his arms. He turned her to face him and gently brushed the tears off her cheeks. She leaned against him, letting the tears spill down her cheeks, not caring about her emotional control. He closed his eyes and just held her, stroking her hair. "It's going to be alright. Whatever happens I'm here for you." She sniffed in response. He kissed her forehead. "Why don't you get ready and then we'll have breakfast. I'll finish up here." She nodded and headed into the bedroom to shower and change.
*******
The arrived in the center of the city at 1050 hours. They walked into the meeting hall of the Symbiosis Commission and found it filled. Jadzia glanced around and shivered slightly. Julian stood by her side, but didn't make any move to comfort her. She had said that he shouldn't before the actual event. Dax walked through the crowds of people rather calmly, Julian following a half pace behind. The were met my two guards at the doors that led to the main room and each led into separate rooms. Jadzia sighed. First they'd seat Julian along the side wall, along with the rest of the unjoined and then she'd be led in and seated at the front of the room in the middle. She took a deep breath in and let it out just as her escort' came for her.
Composing herself to the epitome of Trill self control, she followed the guard. The room was dead silent. She was led to the front of the room and seated in front of the Board. After a moment, they signaled that the hearing would begin. They motioned her to rise.
Dax stood up. She stood there and listened as they read off Dax's past accomplishments. This was the worst part. They told all off Trill what wonders that Dax and its past host had done and then proceeded to nullify all those accomplishments. She listened as they got to Jadzia's accomplishments. "She was the first Trill to be successfully reaccepted to the program. She holds several degrees in the sciences. In Star Fleet, she had achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander and is a highly decorated officer." Dax took a deep breath during the pause. "However, despite all her accomplishments, she has chosen to disregard all her training and marry an unjoined." They gestured in Julian's direction. All eyes in the room were on him for several moments. He simply sat there, his eyes locked on Jadzia. "In accordance with Trill law, we have no other choice but to hold you in Disgrace. From this day forward, you're words will no longer be heeded. You will hold no status on the homeworld. You are no longer recognized as a joined Trill, Parent of Society. For your insubordination, this is your punishment. The Dax symbiont will die with you. It will never be rejoined unless it proves itself worth of the honor." He then spoke several words in the formal language. Through all this, Dax didn't flinch. "You have a moment to speak before the final act. Use it wisely."
Dax nodded and slowly turned to face the galley. As she did, she caught Julian's gaze. He smiled and nodded. Taking a deep breath, she began. "The Commission is wrong. They are nothing more than the dictators of our people." She saw several guards start, but do nothing. "They have lied to me about who I am." You're precious secret's out,' she thought. "They have brutally murdered hundreds of people. Including one of my past hosts, Joran Belar." A murmur ran though the crowd. "He was joined to Dax and then, months later, deemed unstable and the Dax symbiont was removed. He died from separation. Dax's memories were blocked only to resurface a year ago, causing me to have to seek the board's help. Their help would have been to kill me and reblock Dax's memories. It is through my commanding officer and Doctor Bashir that I am here today." She paused briefly. "Every day, thousands of young people commit suicide because the board did not deem them worthy for joining. The board has made mistakes before. Who is to say they didn't make one when a loved one was rejected and took their life because of it?" She was beginning to get to people, she could see. "They have also made a mistake as far as how the joined and unjoined should treat each other." She glanced at Julian. He was practically beaming at her. "The unjoined should not be treated as inferiors. The joined should not have to place restrictions on themselves because someone only has one life." Dax paused and turned to address the board. "Emotions should not have to be censored. Each joined Trill is an individual, not merely a link in a chain. Until we realize this, Trillian will die. Within my lifetime." She took in the livid faces of the board members. "I do not regret my actions." With that, she sat down.
"So be it. From this day forward, you are no longer welcomed on Trillian as a Joined Trill. You have made your decision." She nodded and stood up. She walked slowly over to where Julian was sitting. He stood up and gently took her hand. She smiled at him and they walked out.
Dax heard the doors close behind them with a resounding clang and closed her eyes. She felt his arm wrap around her and pull her into a hug. She leaned against him and whispered, "Let's go home." He nodded and they left.
*******
They got back to her childhood home and began packing. Dax was throwing the last of her belongings in a duffel bag when she heard her mother's voice from the living area. She slung the bag over her shoulder and walked out.
"You should see the broadcasts," she was gushing to Julian. "People are livid! They can't believe some of the things that she said...Jadzia!" She rushed over and hugged her. Jadzia's sister was sitting next to Julian, beaming at her.
"What were you talking about?" she asked.
"Well," Julian responded, "it seems like you made quite an impression today."
Dax winced. "Good or bad."
"It depends on how you look at it. If you think that people questioning the boards decisions a good thing and requesting a full scale investigation from an off world source good, then it is wonderful news." Dax's eyebrows flew up. She looked at Julian. He was smiling.
"Well," he said. "As much as I hate to cut this short, we'd better get going." She gave Jadzia's mother a hug. "It was wonderful seeing you again."
"Oh, you too dear. I'm sorry you can't stay longer." He smiled.
Dax hugged her mom. "I'll write."
"You'd better," she teased. "And you can visit once in a while." Dax smiled and nodded. She and Julian picked up their bags and signaled for transport.
Chapter 2
"Rubicon to Deep Space Nine. Requesting permission to dock."
"Permission granted, Rubicon. Welcome Home."
"Thank you, Major." Julian neatly piloted the runabout in. Dax was in back, getting up after her nap. Julian stifled a yawn as he shut down the runabout. He headed back and keyed the opening sequence as Jadzia joined him. "All I want to do right now is get some sleep."
Dax smiled as they walked out of the shuttle bay. "That sounds heavenly."
"What do you mean? You just took a nap."
"Hmm. I know. But I'd like to spend some real time with you." He smiled and shook his head. They entered their quarters and Julian dropped the bag. "Well," he said, slipping out of his uniform, "if you don't mind the fact that I'll probably fall asleep right away, you can spend all the time with me you want." Dax grinned. Julian pulled on his pyjama bottoms and stretched out on the bed. Within minutes, he was asleep.
Jadzia grinned at her sleeping husband. It was worth it,' she thought. She curled up next to him, shrugging off her uniform jacket and boots. Now, how to tell him the news....' She wrapped her arms around him and fell asleep too.
*******
Julian sighed. It had been a very long day. There had been two accidents with the maintenance crews and he had three surgeries that had been previously scheduled for that day. This had to happen on my birthday, didn't it? Jadzia probably has something planned and I probably won't be able to stay awake much later than 2200.' He reached their quarters and punched the key padd. The door opened and Julian walked in, wide eyed. The lights were dimmed and some of Jadzia's favorite candles were lit. The table looked set for an intimate dinner for two. Julian arched an eyebrow and shrugged out of his uniform jacket. "Jadzia?" He heard movement coming from the bedroom and turned to see her walk out, smiling. His jaw dropped. She was in a blue formal gown that matched her eyes. Julian could feel his fatigue dissipating just watching her walk over.
Dax slipped her arms around his neck. "Hello. Happy Birthday." She kissed him and felt him respond ten-fold. "Hmmm," she murmured, pulling back after a long moment. "Why don't you go change? I laid some clothed out on the bed for you. I'll get dinner." She smiled.
"Hmm," he bent and kissed her again, letting his hands slide down her sides. "I've got a better idea." He kissed her again. Dax melted against him and felt him start to walk slowly towards the bedroom. This isn't exactly what I had in mind. At least for right now. Well, improvisation and spontaneity are keys to a heathy marriage.'
*******
Dax sighed rather contentedly. She glanced at Julian and shook her head. "You're lucky I already hadn't replicated dinner. It would be stone cold right now." Julian grinned. "Hmm," she sighed. "Come on." She got up. "It's 1700 and I have holosuite reservations for 1800."
"Love," he grinned, "I don't think we *need* a holosuite."
Jadzia grinned and slipped on her dress. "Letch," she teased. "It's not that kind of program." He chuckled and got up. "I'll get dinner. You get dressed."
Julian sighed delightedly. He pulled on the tuxedo pants and shirt. He tied the bowtie and adjusted it neatly. He picked up the jacket and walked out. Jadzia was lighting the candles on the table. She looked up and grinned. "Why, exactly, am I to wear a tuxedo?"
"It's a surprise." Julian frowned. "I promise you'll enjoy it," she smiled. He sighed slightly and shook his head. "Sit down." She walked over to him and gently kissed him. He grinned and walked over to the table.
Dinner was wonderful. Jadzia had prepared a wonderful seafood dish and had somehow obtained an exceptional bottle of white wine. Julian smiled at his wife. "You certainly went to extremes tonight. This was wonderful."
Jadzia smiled. "Thank you. Now..." she stood up and walked over to a shelf. She pulled a small box off the shelf and walked back. "Happy Birthday." Julian smiled at her and opened it. Inside were a pair of what looked like tickets and a holo program. Julian picked up the tickets and read them. "Phantom of the Opera." His jaw dropped. "Opening night. Her Majesties Theatre. Thursday, October 9, 1986." He picked up the holo and looked up at Jadzia. "Where did you get this?" he gasped.
Jadzia smiled. "I asked Quark about it. He couldn't believe I wanted to get you this for your birthday." She smiled demurely. "I figure it will at least give you another reason to wear that tux of yours." He grinned and stood up. "Thank you," he murmured and kissed her. Dax smiled and pulled away. "We should go. We'll be late otherwise." He nodded. Jadzia reached and picked up a pair of opera gloves and pulled them on and then draped a shawl around her shoulders. Julian extended his arm to her and she took it.
*******
Captain Sisko was standing in a slightly sheltered corner of the Promenade. He saw Julian and Jadzia heading for Quark's, arm in arm. Sisko smiled and hit his commbadge, "Sisko to Kira."
"Kira here."
"They just entered Quark's. Are you and Odo in position?"
"Affirmative."
"Good. Proceed." Sisko smiled. Dax certainly went through a lot of trouble to surprise a person.
*******
Julian programed the holosuite. It acknowledged the acceptance of the program and he opened the doors. He reached for Jadzia and she took his hand. They walked in and found themselves in late 20th century London. Julian gazed around, recognizing a few sights. Across the street, Her Majesty's was lit up for the event. Julian grinned. "Remind me to thank you properly later." Dax laughed and they crossed the street and entered the theatre. Inside, they handed their tickets to someone and received them back intact. Julian grinned. "An addition Quark mentioned," Jadzia smiled. "Use the same tickets over and over again." Julian nodded and led her to their seats. Orchestra level, 12th row. "Can you switch seats occasionally? Say sit in the side loge every once in a while?" Dax grinned. "I don't see why not." Julian smiled and they sat down, waiting for the show to begin.
*******
"Is everything ready on your front O'Brien?"
"Yes sir. Keiko and I are ready to deliver the packages."
"Good. Sisko to Kira. How are things proceeding on your front?"
"Everything moving according to plan."
Sisko smiled. This is going off without a hitch.'
*******
Dax was surprised. She wasn't sure how she'd react to a musical based on Leroux's novel. She had never read anything by him, but, seeing as he was a contemporary of Hugo, she never considered it worth her time. Now, she was regretting not reading it. Thankfully Julian has a copy.' She glanced at him. His eyes were riveted to the stage, where Sarah Brightman was singing her first solo, "Think of Me." She seems to have a rather strong character. I'd love to read this.' Dax turned her attention back to the stage and found herself swept up in Brightman's masterful singing and the story.
*******
Julian sighed delightedly. It was intermission. He grinned, remembering Jadzia's reaction to the crashing chandelier. It was faster than I thought it would be,' Julian admitted. He wrapped an arm around her waist. "This is wonderful. Thank you so much."
Jadzia grinned. "That's the third time tonight that you've thanked me."
"Yes, well..." he paused. "How are you liking it?"
"It's wonderful. You have the novel back home right?"
Julian nodded. "It's in the original French, though. Can you read it?"
"Bits and pieces," she admitted.
"I'll have it translated if you want." He smiled delightedly. He was glad she was enjoying herself.
"I'd like that."
"The novel's a bit different than the musical. Just so you know. Leroux was journalist first, so it take the form of an almost dictation at parts, like he's writing an article. That and some of the characters that are in the book are omitted in the musical and some of the characterizations are slightly different..." Julian paused as the lights dimmed briefly and went back on. "We should get back." Dax nodded and they headed towards their seats. They sat down and the lights dimmed. The orchestra started the Entr'acte. Jadzia settled back in her seat and gently rested her head against Julian's shoulder. Tonight is a night of surprises,' she thought. For both of us.'
*******
An hour or so later, they were heading back to their quarters. Jadzia couldn't help but grin in anticipation. Julian punched the keypad and they walked in. "Lights," he commanded and his jaw dropped.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" The entire command staff was there. Julian turned towards Jadzia, mildly shocked. She grinned. "Surprise."
Julian shook his head and smiled. Within minutes, the party was in full swing. There were streamers and other decorations neatly hung. Keiko walked out with a cake, ablaze with candles. "Quick! Blow that out before the emergencies kick in!" O'Brien joked.
"Ha ha. I can't wait to see what yours would do," Julian retorted. He neatly blew out the candles to delighted cheers. "I could say something, but I won't," O'Brien grinned. Julian chuckled. Cake and champagne was handed out. The party lasted well into the night. After everyone was gone, Jadzia put the remainder of the cake into the replicator and immediately followed with dishes. Julian came up behind her and slipped his arms around her waist, savoring the feel of the material under his hands. "Hmm," he murmured. "This has certainly been a night of surprises."
Dax smiled. "Yes it has," she admitted neutrally. "Fortunately, it's not over." She felt his stifle his laughter at that. She shook her head and turned around. "*Not* what you're thinking about."
"Hmmm. You've been fighting off most of my advances all night. Is there something you're not telling me?"
Dax grinned. "Well, sort of," she admitted. Julian raised an eyebrow. Dax paused and suddenly felt a wave of dizziness overwhelm her. Julian's hands slid to her arms. "Are you alright?" he asked.
"Just dizzy there for a moment," she replied. He guided her to the couch and sat her down. He went to get a tricorder. Well, so much for telling him,' "Julian, I can explain why I got dizzy."
"Hmm?" he returned with a tricorder. "What's that?"
She patted the couch next to her. He sat down. She reached and took his free hand and pulled it against her abdomen. "I'm pregnant, love. Dizzy spells are a side effect." She saw his eyes widen in shock and flick from her eyes to their hands back to her eyes. She let go of his hand. It didn't move. "You're pregnant," he whispered. She nodded, smiling. She saw the hints of a smile touch the corners of his lips. He took a deep breath and let it out. He met her eyes again, grinned, and kissed her. She leaned against him. After a moment, they pulled apart. He smiled. "Who all knows?"
"Just you. I thought we'd keep your birthday yours." Julian smiled and hugged her. She sighed and leaned against him, stifling a yawn. He pulled back. "You look exhausted," he observed. She smiled at him. "Come on," he said. "Let's go to bed."
*******
Dax curled up next to him, smiling. "Happy Birthday, love."
He turned to face her. "Thank you," he whispered. "I couldn't have asked for a better one." Dax kissed him and closed her eyes. Within moments, she was sound asleep. "Or a more perfect present," he said, smiling slightly. He kissed her forehead and closed his eyes.
*******
Dax stirred early the next morning. Julian was still asleep. Dax glanced at the chronometer and sighed 0500. She didn't have to get up for another two hours. She knew this was due to the pregnancy. Humans get morning sickness. Bajorans sneeze a lot. The Trill have a variety of things. The least of which is your body playing tricks on you. That, and around the third month your spots start itching. Dax sighed and got up, knowing she wouldn't get back to sleep. She pulled on a robe and walked over to the replicator and almost ordered a raktagino. Wincing at the thought of limited caffeine for nine to ten months she got some water. Normally Trill carried for ten months but her family showed a history of being unpredictable and carrying for only nine months. Dax smiled slightly. Her mother said it was a blessing from all the joined and unjoined gods of Trill.
Julian stirred slightly and opened his eyes briefly. Jadzia wasn't in bed. He closed his eyes again. She had been keeping strange hours lately, going to bed later, waking up earlier. Taking naps at two in the afternoon, waking up at four in the morning. 'I wonder why....' He suddenly remembered and sat up. He glanced out into the living room and caught a glimpse of her through the open door. 'That's right,' he thought. 'I suppose this is how Trill women react to pregnancy.' Julian grinned, remembering Kira's sneezing fits and lay back down.
Chapter 3
Later that afternoon, Julian and Jadzia met for a late lunch. They were sitting in the Replimat, talking quietly when Chief O'Brien came over.
"Hello, you two."
Julian looked up and smiled. "Chief! Pull up a chair."
"Ah. I'm afraid I can't. I just wanted to invite the two of you over for dinner tonight. Keiko's been getting on my case about this for awhile." Miles grinned. The two couples had taken turns hosting the other once a month since Julian and Jadzia got engaged. "And she figured that after last night, neither of you would want to make dinner this evening, so...."
"Thank you Miles," Dax smiled. "What time?"
"About 2000."
"We'll be there." O'Brien nodded and walked off. Dax turned back to Julian. "So, I suppose we should tell them tonight." Julian smiled and nodded. He reached over and gently grabbed her hand. Dax sighed happily. "Have you told anyone yet?" she asked.
"Told anyone what?" came a voice. The couple looked up and saw Kira standing there with a tray in hand. "Mind if I pull up a chair?"
"Go ahead," Julian motioned and slid over to make room. Kira set her lunch down and pulled a chair from a nearby table over.
"Now," she said as she settled down. "What have you possibly told people?"
Dax glanced at Julian who simply tipped his head towards her. She smiled and turned to Kira. "I'm pregnant." Kira coughed, choking slightly on her coffee. Dax grinned.
"Congratulations!" Kira exclaimed when she finally caught her breath. "That's wonderful! How far along?"
"About a month," Dax replied. Julian simply sat there and smiled.
Kira took a sip of her coffee. "How long to Trill usually carry?"
"Usually, about ten months." Kira's expression was one of complete sympathy for her friend. Dax smiled. "However, my family has a history of delivering early."
Julian glanced up startled. "You didn't mention that," he said.
Jadzia glanced at her husband. "I'm sorry. I could have sworn I did."
Julian shook his head and smiled. "Well, I'm just glad I found out now rather than in eight months." Dax grinned at him.
Kira smiled wistfully at the couple. They're so lucky,' she thought. Dax caught the glance and smiled at her friend. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," she replied. Jadzia shot Julian a concerned glance. Julian took the hint and stood up. "Well, if you'll excuse me, I really should be getting back."
Kira nodded and smiled. "Congratulations, Julian."
He smiled in return and turned to Jadzia. "I'll see you later." She nodded and kissed him. He smiled at Kira again and walked off to the Infirmary. Dax followed him with her eyes until he disappeared. When she turned back to the table, Kira was grinning. "What?"
Kira shook her head. "Oh, nothing. I just find it amazing how the two of you can still act like you're on your honeymoon." Dax laughed sheepishly. "So," Kira continued. "When's the baby due?"
*******
Julian sank down on the couch in their quarters. He picked up a small album that was sitting on the table and opened it. Inside were wedding photos. Julian flipped through the pages, smiling and laughing out loud occasionally. He came to the back and gazed at the photo Akmed had given him of his mother. Julian sighed. He closed his eyes and tried to remember what things had been like when that photo was taken. His mother young, happy. He was only a toddler. When he opened his eyes, Jadzia was standing next to him, gazing at the photo. She looked at her husband and smiled slightly. Sitting down next to him, she wrapped her arms around him and nodded towards the photo. "I didn't even realize that was in there until this morning. Is that your mother?" Julian nodded. "How old were you?" He sighed and gently touched the photo. "I was about two years."
Dax glanced at him. "What's wrong?"
Julian glanced at her and smiled. "Nothing. I was just trying to remember when this was taken."
Dax gazed at him and then asked, "Have you told Michael yet?" Julian sighed. "No. Not yet." She paused, trying to gauge his reaction. "Would you rather I did?" Julian tenderly brushed her cheek. "No. I will. We've been getting along better ever since that trip to Bajor." Jadzia smiled. "Yes, it would take a near death experience to got the two of you to work things out. You're both too stubborn for your own good." Julian laughed and hugged her. After a moment she pulled away. "We have to be at the O'Brien's soon. Why don't you change?"
Julian nodded and stood up. "What about you?"
"I will. I'm just going to straighten up a bit." Julian nodded and walked into the bedroom. Dax glanced at the photo and sighed. She closed the album and put it away. She neatened up a bit and then headed into the bedroom. Julian was buttoning his shirt. He smiled at her and came over. Wrapping both his arms around her waist he asked, "So, besides waking up and going to sleep at strange hours, any other side effects I should be aware of?"
Dax grinned. "Well, at about three months, my spots will start itching like crazy but other than that...." Julian had begun to laugh. "What? It's not funny!"
"I'm sorry. It's just I'm amazed at the different reactions. That, and I can't get Kira's sneezing fits out of my head. Quark had a betting pool going each time she started." Julian grinned. "I won about two bars of latinum once."
"Julian!" she exclaimed, trying not to laugh. He just grinned at her. She sighed and shook her head, pulling out of his arms. "I've got to get dressed if we're going to make it on time." Julian smiled and nodded. She pulled out a pair of silk slacks and a blouse. She changed quickly and took the clip out of her hair. Julian came back in and smiled at her. He held up a bottle of wine. "I figure we should bring something. All set?" Dax smiled and kissed him. "Let's go."
They arrived at the O'Brien's. Even through the door they could hear Molly and Kirayoshi chattering happily at their parents. Julian smiled and turned to Dax. She caught his gaze and smiled back. Almost unconsciously, her hands slid to her abdomen just as the doors opened. Keiko smiled at them. "Come in. It's so good to see you two. It's been too long since we did this."
Julian smiled. "Hello Keiko." He held up the bottle of wine.
"Oh, Julian. Thank you! This will go perfectly with dinner." She bustled back into the room. Jadzia glanced around. Molly was sitting on the ground playing with Kirayoshi. She smiled and glanced at Keiko. "Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked.
"Oh, no. That's okay. Everything's fi..."
"Aunty Jadzia!" came a cry and Dax felt two small arms wrap around her legs. She looked down and saw Molly. "Hello Molly. How are you." Molly released her and Dax crouched down to her level. Yoshi toddled slowly towards them, grinning. " Nty Jzia!" he cried, imitating Molly. Dax grinned and reached for his hand. She was so caught up in greeting the kids that she missed Julian's reaction until she heard Miles' say "What are you grinning like that for?" Dax turned and saw Julian smiling fondly at her and smiled back. She tilted her head towards the O'Brien's and he nodded. She turned back to the kids, who were trying to get her attention. Julian turned to Miles, "Like what?"
"Like, oh I don't know."
"Like you were just reminded of a pleasant memory," Keiko supplied, wiping her hands on a towel. Julian grinned and turned to Jadzia. She was grinning but didn't meet his eyes. He turned back to the O'Brien's combined scrutiny.
"How come I suddenly feel like I'm in the Spanish Inquisition?" he quipped. Miles grinned.
Jadzia stood up. "So, what's new with...." Her hand shot out find something to hold. She felt her knees buckle and would have hit the ground if Julian hadn't caught her.
"Jadzia! Are you alright?" Keiko rushed over. Julian gently guided her to the couch, frowning slightly. He sat her down and she closed her eyes. "I'm fine," she replied.
Julian sank down next to her. "Jadzia, I don't much like this. Is there anything I can give you to help counteract the effects?"
"Effects of what?" Miles asked, concerned. Julian glanced at him and Keiko and shook his head, smiling.
"The effects of being pregnant," Dax responded, gently shaking her head to clear it. Her statement was met with shocked silence. Miles was the first to break it. "Well, I'll be damned," he grinned. "Congratulations!" he exclaimed, clamping his hand down on Julian's shoulder. Julian grinned. Keiko had hugged Jadzia and the two of them were already chatting about the differences of human and Trill pregnancies. "When'd you find out?" Miles asked.
"Last night," Julian responded. He felt someone tug on his slacks and looked down. Kirayoshi was standing there, trying to climb into his lap. Julian reached down and picked him up. Miles grinned. "Well, I can't think of anyone that would make a better dad."
Julian smiled. "Thank you Miles."
"Speaking of which, does your father know?"
Julian shook his head. "No. Only Kira does."
"And Benjamin," Dax interjected. She grinned sheepishly. "I kinda lost my equilibrium in Ops this afternoon."
Julian frowned again. He was about to ask her when she said, "I don't know, Julian. You're the doctor. You tell me."
Julian frowned. "How many children have you had and you don't know?"
Dax paused and then sighed. "Well, it's never been this bad," she admitted. She sighed when his frown deepened. Keiko had wandered over to finish with dinner. Miles had went over to Molly, who had called to him. "Love, can we talk about this later?" she asked. Julian nodded. He set Kirayoshi down and stood up and offered her his hand. Dax paused. He's lucky he does this on a regular basis or I'd have to have a word with him.' She took it and stood up. He pulled her close and kissed her. "I'm sorry. I'm just worried about you." Dax smiled at him and nodded.
The remainder of the evening passed without event. They talked about last night and station gossip over coffee (decaffeinated for Jadzia), the conversation wandering from topic to topic. Miles and Julian ended up talking about their last dart game. Jadzia and Keiko's conversation eventually wandered towards the Jadzia's pregnancy when Keiko had to put Kirayoshi and Molly down to bed. Dax watched as Molly changed into her nightgown and crawled into bed. "So," Keiko said. "How does it feel?"
Dax smiled. "Strange. It's been a long time since I've been a parent, even longer since I was the one actually had the child."
Keiko grinned as she tucked Molly in. "How did Julian react when you told him?'
Dax laughed. "He was understandably shocked. But after that initial reaction," she smiled, remembering. "I've rarely seen him that happy or excited."
Keiko smiled. "I know. When I told Miles I was pregnant with Molly, he flipped for about two seconds. After that, he was the happiest man on the Enterprise."
Dax smiled and shook her head.
*******
Julian sank down in a chair, a cup of coffee in his hands.
"So, *dad*, how does it feel?" Julian glanced up at Miles and grinned. "It's not that different yet," he replied.
"Ah," Miles took a sip of his drink. "Just wait." He studied the younger man. "So, whatever happened to not being much of a family man'?"
Julian glanced up and smiled. "I changed my mind."
Miles chuckled. "So, how unexpected was it?"
"How unexpected should it have been? You were shocked when you found out about Keiko last time."
"Touche," Miles said. "But, what I mean is," Miles paused, "were you and Jadzia trying or...."
Julian paused. "We had talked about it but, no, not really." Miles nodded. He glanced up and Keiko and Jadzia walked out of Molly's room. "The kids asleep?" Keiko nodded. He smiled. Jadzia walked over and sank down on her husbands lap. Julian smiled and wrapped his arms around her. Keiko sank down next to Miles and smiled at the other couple. "Enjoy that while you can," she teased, taking her husband's hand.
Dax glanced at them and smiled. She rested her head against the top of his. "Not for a couple more months." Miles and Keiko laughed. They talked the rest of the evening until 0100 hours. Keiko had retired at about 2600, apologizing for retiring. Jadzia had been nodding on and off for about a half an hour. Julian glanced at her and then to Miles. "I suppose we should be going." He smiled and nodded. Julian gently shook his wife, "Love, wake up." She stirred and yawned slightly. "Hmm?"
Julian smiled. "Let's go." She nodded and got up. She smiled at Miles. "I'm sorry. I'm a bit more tired than normal lately."
Miles grinned. "Completely understandable." They hugged. "Congratulations, Dax."
"Thank you, Miles," she smiled. Julian came up behind her. Miles stuck out his hand. Julian smiled and shook it. "Thank you for inviting us over."
"Ah, it was our pleasure. Congratulations to you too." Julian smiled. "Just make sure you don't become too overprotective," he added in a conspiratorial whisper. "They hate that."
Jadzia chuckled softly. "Spoken from experience Chief?" He just smiled ruefully. Saying goodnight, they left.
Julian sighed and slipped an arm around her shoulders. "You look exhausted," he whispered.
"Hmmm. It's one in the morning. What am I supposed to be?" Julian smiled and kissed the top of her head as they reached their quarters. Julian tapped the control and the doors slid open. Jadzia walked in and collapsed on the bed. Julian smiled. "Aren't you going to change?" Dax shook her head. He grinned. "Come on." He pulled her up, gently. She sighed and sank against him. He smiled. "Do I have to undress you myself?" he teased. She glanced at him through her lashes. "Julian," she murmured, smiling slightly. "I'm falling asleep on my feet." Her smile broadened into a grin when she saw the look on his face. "You're such a letch," she teased.
He grinned back. "I am not. You just look more beautiful than I ever remember you being." She flushed slightly. He gently bent his head and kissed her tenderly. After a moment, she pulled back. Smiling, she walked over to her drawer and pulled out her nightgown. Julian smiled, shook his head, and went into the bathroom to wash up.
Dax slipped into the nightgown. She brushed her hair out and slipped into bed. She closed her eyes just as the bathroom door opened. Julian smiled when he saw her. He shook his head. He still couldn't really believe it. He sank down on the bed next to her and curled up next to her. He wrapped his arms around her, gently resting his hands on her midsection. He could feel the slight stirring of the symbiont against the top of his hands. He smiled and kissed the back of her head. "I love you so much," he whispered. He could feel her even breathing and realized she was already asleep. He smiled tenderly and closed his eyes. 'Now, I just have to tell Michael.'
Chapter 4
Michael Bashir walked into the infirmary, cradling his left arm and limping. Maile glanced up. "Ambassador! What happened?"
"Oh, I thought I'd go riding in the holosuites. It's been so long...longer than I thought. I got my hand tangled in the reins as the horse tossed me." Maile was leading him into the main infirmary. Julian was there with Dax. "This should help with the dizzy spells," he was saying, grinning teasingly. "We'll deal with your itching spots when...." He caught sight of Michael. "What happened?" he asked, picking up a tricorder. Dax touched his arm as she passed. He glanced at her and nodded.
"Horse tossed me," he said as Julian ran the tricorder over him. He could practically hear his son clucking at the results.
"A horse tossed you?" he asked. "A sprained wrist, three bruised ribs, and several cuts and bruises." Julian shook his head. "You're quite out of practice."
Michael chuckled. "So, what was that about itching spots? And dizzy spells. Is Jadzia alright?"
Julian smiled. "She's fine."
Michael glanced at him. "But...."
Julian glanced up from Michael's wrist. He wasn't quite sure how to tell him. They'd been getting along better lately but Julian wasn't quite too close to him. Bloody hell. What's wrong with telling him Jadzia's pregnant?' He put down the instrument he had been using and picked up another. "Well...Actually, there is a reason."
"One would hope so," Michael said, flexing his fingers as Julian worked on his ribs. "What reason is that?"
Julian bent his head lower. "She's a month pregnant." Michael started in surprise and winced. Julian sighed. "Hold still," he commanded.
"Pregnant! Son, that's wonderful! Oh, by the way, happy birthday." Julian chuckled softly. "Well, I didn't get a chance to see you on your birthday. Better late than never."
Julian shook his head and picked up the tricorder. "That should do it. You'll be sore for a couple of days, but other than that...." He glanced up and frowned at his father's expression. "What?"
"Nothing," Michael said, shaking his head. "So, one month pregnant. And I assume the dizzy spells and itching spots are a side effect."
"Terran females get morning sickness. Bajoran women sneeze non stop. Trill women faint and itch." Julian chuckled.
Michael clamped his hand on Julian's shoulder. "Congratulations."
Julian smiled slightly. "Thank you."
Michael sighed. "I can't believe I'm going to be a grandfather."
Julian glanced up, mildly disturbed at that thought. "Michael...."
The elder Bashir caught the look on his son's face. He sighed. "You still don't trust me, do you?"
Julian glanced at him. "Michael," he sighed.
"Julian, don't start." Michael sighed. "Alright, well, I should go." He got up and walked towards the door.
"Michael, I'm sorry. I just...." Julian sighed.
"It's alright. I understand. It's not that you don't trust me, just not in that area."
"Well, trust is earned, Michael."
He nodded and walked out. Julian sighed. He hadn't meant to react like that. Not really. Oh, well. What's done is done. Besides, he had been right.
*******
Dax sat in her lab, crunching some numbers for one of her latest projects when the door opened. "Michael," she smiled. "What can I do for you?"
"Actually, I think that's my line," Michael smiled. "Congratulations. Julian just told me."
Dax smiled warmly. "Thank you, Michael." She paused. "So, what did you really come here for?"
Michael sighed. "Well, I was hoping you could help me out with something."
"What's that?"
"Try and talk some sense into my son."
Dax raised an eyebrow. "What happened?"
"Oh, nothing really. I just get the distinct feeling that he's uncomfortable with the fact that I might actually want to be a part of my grandchild's life."
Dax took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Michael," she began. "I don't know if I can do anything. He has a right to feel the way he does." Michael sighed. She continued, "But, just because he's uncomfortable with it doesn't mean he'll follow through. If anything, he'll probably give you a chance to prove yourself."
Michael sighed. "And if I don't pass that test?" Dax solemnly met his gaze. "Right." Michael straightened. "Thank you, my dear. I'll let you get back to work."
Dax smiled and nodded. I suppose I should have a talk with Julian tonight about this.'
*******
Julian sat on the couch in their quarters reading one of the medical journals he received when Dax walked in. "Hello," he said, smiling at her. Jadzia smiled in return and walked over to him. He reached up and pulled her onto his lap. "How was your day?" he asked.
"Fine. Whatever you gave me seems to work."
Julian smiled. "Good."
"So, you told Michael." She smiled at him. Julian nodded. "He came to my lab to say congratulations."
Julian smiled. "That was decent of him."
"That and he asked me if I would talk to you about what happened after you told him."
Julian sighed. "Love, don't say it. If it makes you feel any better, I didn't mean to react like that."
"I know Julian, but you did." She gently brushed a lock of hair off his forehead. "I told him that what he was asking me to do is change the past." Julian glanced at her, startled. "What? They only way you'd be completely comfortable with the idea of Michael being a part of this child's life is if the past didn't happen." Julian sighed. "Just give him a chance to prove himself."
"I plan to. I don't have to like it, but I won't cheat him out of the opportunity." His features shifted. "But, I swear, if I even remotely see the slightest hint of anything, his chance is over." Jadzia nodded.
*******
Days turned to weeks and into months. Jadzia continued to work in Ops until her eighth month, much to Julian's protests. He finally managed to convince her to take leave but more than once he'd catch her in her lab, running tests and experiments. He was keeping a close eye on her, his excuse was that there were next to no references to children of terran and trill parents, thus waranting closer supervision, just in case.' Dax could hardly argue with him, so she put up with the extra attention.
Nine months rolled around and Julian began to get edgy. He couldn't pinpoint when exactly the baby would be born due to her family's history, so he was simply prepared. Jadzia asked him if he planned on delivering the baby, seeing as another doctor was presently on the station from the U.S.S. Okinawa, waiting to transfer to another posting. Julian had thought about it for a moment and had said that he would rather not. At her startled glance at that, he simply said that he'd rather not be in complete clinical mode' for this.
*******
Jadzia shifted slightly. She couldn't sleep. Her back hurt to much to sleep on it and sleeping on her side was uncomfortable. She sighed and glanced at Julian. Sound asleep. How does he manage with me shifting like this?' He hadn't complained once, though. She smiled slightly and leaned over and kissed his forehead. Sighing, she got up and walked to the replicator and got some milk. She sank into a chair (the couch was too difficult to get in and out of) and sipped. She felt a sound thump and glanced down at her belly and smiled. "So you can't sleep either?" she said quietly. She glanced at the chronometer. 0300. Shaking her head, she closed her eyes just as an emergency comm call came for Julian. She heard him mumble something until he heard the phrase "Medical emergency" and then she heard the communicator chirp. "On my way," he said. She waited until he came out, rushing towards the door. He smiled at her slightly and slipped out. Dax smiled and shook her head again. Eventually she fell asleep.
*******
She woke up to the distinct sensation of a tightening feeling in her abdomen. She winced slightly, mildly disoriented...for about point three seconds. Her eyes flew open, then she relaxed. Okay, this is just more false contractions,' she thought. Gods, I hate waking up in the middle of one. Scares the hell out of me.' She closed her eyes as the contraction subsided...and was woken up five minutes later. "Oh Gods!" she gasped. She quickly changed and paused. Julian's in the middle of an emergency. What if this is false labor?' She walked over and picked up the tricorder and scanned herself. Her eyes widened at the results and she rushed out the door.
*******
Julian was working with the doctor from the U.S.S. Okinawa, Dr. Ken Bradley, when he caught Jadzia's reflection in some equipment. "Jadzia, what..." he began, when he caught sight of her. Her blue eyes were wide and her hands were resting on her belly. "Oh, my god." He darted over and helped her onto a biobed. The doctor from the Okinawa came over. "What's happening?"
"She's gone into labor." Julian's voice held a mixture of panic and excitement. He glanced at her. "How far apart are the contractions?"
"About five minutes," she said, wincing slightly as another one came. She felt Julian's hand tighten in hers until it was over.
Doctor Bradley glanced at the display. "Not much longer," he commented.
Julian glanced back at Jadzia. She smiled weakly. "Sorry. I know you probably have your hands full...."
Julian shook his head. "We were almost done when you came in. The rest can be handled by the nurses." She nodded. Julian glanced at Bradley, who was running a tricorder. Bradley caught his glance and smiled. "Just relax," he said. "Everything's under control." Julian sighed and saw Jadzia smile out of the corner of his eye. "What?" he asked as Bradley moved away.
"Are you *sure* you're okay with this?" she teased.
"Yeah, just fine. I know everything's under control...just not under *my* control." Jadzia grinned and winced again. Julian gently gripped her hand.
*******
An hour later, Jadzia was exhausted, but immensely happy. Jadzia gently brushed her baby girl's soft hair with her fingertips. Julian smiled gently at them. "Congratulations," Bradley smiled at them. Jadzia managed to tear her gaze from her daughter and smiled at him. Julian reached and shook his hand. "Thank you Ken."
"It was no problem Julian." Nodding to them, he walked out, giving them a moment of privacy.
Julian turned back to Jadzia and smiled. She glanced at him and reached her free hand out to him. He walked back and took her hand, sitting down on the edge of the bed. He glanced down at his new daughter and smiled. She had light spots running down the side of her face and dark hair. She yawned and opened her eyes briefly. They were a dark blue, almost violet, in color. Julian smile broadened. He glanced at Jadzia and she smiled and extended her arms so he could hold her. Julian carefully drew the little girl into his arms. Jadzia watched as he gently brushed the line of spots and smiled, his expression one of enchantment. Leaning back against her pillow, Jadzia simply watched them until she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer.
Julian glanced up at Jadzia and back to the baby and smiled. Both sound asleep.' He carefully skirted the equipment and set her down in the infirmary's crib. "Now," he whispered. "What should we name you?" He heard a noise coming from the door to the room and looked up. Kira stood there, smiling. "Major," Julian managed to tear himself away from his little girl and greet Kira.
"Are they both asleep?" Julian nodded. Kira smiled. "I got to wondering where Jadzia was this morning. We were supposed to have breakfast together. I check with the computer and came over here. I thought this might be why."
Julian smiled and tipped his head towards the door. Kira nodded and they walked out. "You look exhausted, Doctor. Maybe you should join them," Kira commented.
"No, I'm fine for now. Besides, I need to check up on the patients that were brought in earlier."
Kira frowned but didn't say anything for a moment. "Boy or girl?" she asked.
"Girl," Julian replied. Kira chuckled at the look that crossed his face. "Well, congratulations, Julian. Tell Jadzia that I'll stop by later." Julian smiled and nodded. When Kira left, he began to make rounds and was firmly led into his office by Bradley with direct orders to not leave until he got a few hours rest.' Julian put up a half hearted protest but gratefully sank onto the couch he kept there for when he was working late.
*******
Jadzia woke up an hour later. Glancing around, she smiled when she was the infirmary cradle. "Hello, little one," she whispered. She pulled herself up and walked over. She was still sleeping, wrapped up in the blanket. Dax reached down and gently brushed her hand over her daughter's soft skin. She smiled tenderly. It was all so new and so familiar at the same time. She wasn't even aware of Julian's presence until he rested his hand on her shoulder.
"You should be in bed," he whispered softly.
Dax smiled at him and turned back to the cradle. She felt his movement and he was standing next to her, his arm wrapped around her waist. "So," Jadzia whispered, "What should we name her?"
Julian paused. They had tossed around ideas, but had never really settled on anything. He was about to suggest something when the baby stirred and yawned. Both parents were entranced. She opened her deep blue eyes and Julian smiled. "I can't remember when I've seen eyes that dark of blue. They're almost the color of morning glories."
Dax turned to face him. "Morning glories?"
"Terran flowers. They're a deep shade of blue, almost purple."
She smiled and turned back and gently picked her baby up. "Hmmm." She walked back to the bed and sat on the corner. She was about to say something when there was a slight rapping at the door. They looked up and saw Keiko standing there with Molly and Kirayoshi. "I hope we're not coming at a bad time. News travels quickly and Molly wanted to come visit."
Dax smiled gently. "No, this is fine." They walked in Molly's eyes were wide as she peered at the baby. "Oh, she's adorable!" Keiko exclaimed softly. "Such blue eyes! Almost like morning glories."
Dax glanced at Julian and smiled. "That's what Julian just said. I've never seen them."
Keiko smiled. "So, have you picked out a name yet?"
"We were just talking about it," Dax smiled. She looked at Julian. He was smiling slightly. "You were going to say something before. What was it?"
"Hmm? Oh, I was going to suggest a name but I changed my mind."
"Oh."
"How about Glory?" Molly asked. Three pairs of eyes fixed on her. "You keep saying that, so why not name her that?"
Julian grinned. "The flawless logic of a child," he murmured. He glanced at Dax. "What do you think?"
Dax sat quietly, thinking. She smiled slightly. "I like it," she admitted. "Except, isn't there a different variation on it? I could have sworn I heard it once."
"Gloria," Keiko supplied. "It's from Latin. I think it means praise.' "
Dax smiled and nodded. "Gloria it is." Molly smiled, delighted that they had used her idea...sort of.
The O'Brien's stayed for about ten minutes. Kieko smiled as they left. "Congratulations, both of you."
Dax smiled and nodded. Julian was gently rocking Gloria, his eyes locked on her tiny frame. He barely glanced up and smiled. He turned back and gently brushed her cheek. She began to make whimpering sounds. "Hmm? What's wrong?" he asked. The whimpering threatened to turn into crying. Julian smiled as he realized what the problem was as he got a strong rooting reflex when he brushed her cheek. He walked back to Jadzia and said, "I think someone's hungry." She smiled and reached for her. Julian transferred Gloria to her mother and said, "Do you need a hand?" Dax glanced at him and simply raised an eyebrow. Julian shook his head. He was about to respond, when he heard Maile at the door. "Yes?"
"Sorry to disturb you, but Doctor Bradley wants you to take a look at one of the patients."
Julian nodded and turned back to Jadzia. "Will you be alright?" he asked.
She nodded. "Go. You can't hover over me all day." Julian smiled and left, closing the door behind him.
Chapter 5
A few days later, Jadzia and Gloria were settled in their quarters. Friends had been stopping by all day and Jadzia was exhausted. Checking on Gloria, who was sleeping soundly, Dax sank down on the couch and allowed herself to drift off, telling herself she'd only sleep for an hour. It seemed like only minutes later when she felt a gentle hand rest on her shoulder. She glanced up and smiled. "Julian. What are you doing home so early?"
He smiled tenderly. "It's 1730, love."
"1730? That can't be. I've only been sleeping for an hour. That was at 1400." She sat up and glanced at the chronometer. 1730. Sure enough. She glanced back at Julian. He was smiling gently. She grinned sheepishly. "I guess I was more tired than I thought."
He smiled and sat down next to her. "Well," he murmured. He kissed her forehead gently, "you have a right to be tired." She smiled at him. "How's Gloria?"
"Sleep..." a tiny wail came from the adjoining room. Julian grinned. "Then again, maybe not," Jadzia smiled.
Julian stood up and headed towards the room. He gently picked her up, shushing her softly. She quieted down quickly. Smiling, Julian walked back out into the living room. Jadzia was still sitting on the couch. She watched him walk back to her, gently rocking Gloria. Dax smiled. "I think we really lucked out. She's been so wonderful all afternoon."
"Well, she's tired too," Julian murmured, smiling down at Gloria.
Dax stood up and walked over to them. She wrapped an arm around him and smiled. "You're going to spoil her rotten, aren't you?"
Julian glanced at her. "Isn't that my job?" he teased.
Dax smiled and stood on tiptoe and kissed him. "Well, if you're occupied, I'll make dinner."
"Oh, no. You and Gloria just rest." He gently handed her to Jadzia. "I'll make dinner."
"But we've been resting for hours," Jadzia protested, smiling at Gloria.
"Just please," he murmured. "Listen to your doctor for once." Jadzia giggled, which was mirrored slightly by Gloria smiling. Julian and Jadzia gazed affectionately. "She's a quick learner," Julian said.
"Hmm. Must take after her mother," Jadzia replied. Julian scowled slightly and she giggled again. He gently sat her down and headed over to the replicator, whistling softly. Jadzia smiled at him. She glanced back down at Gloria and smiled, quietly talking. I think I'm going to love being a parent...'
