Chapter 1

Julian sat in the Infirmary, relaxing for the first time in days. Things had been busy on the station lately. Several transports had arrived at the same time and a few fights had broke out. Not to mention all the paperwork that he had to process for Odo's security reasons. Julian sighed. Also not to mention that he hadn't gotten a decent nights sleep in several days. Days nothing. Weeks! He grinned and shook his head.

"Doctor?"

He looked up. Maile was standing in his door. "Yes?"

"I know you said that you had some paperwork to do and that you didn't want to be disturbed," she looked quite apologetic, "but your father's here to see you."

Julian sighed, whether due to the fact that he'd once again have to put the paperwork aside or have to talk to Michael. 'It's not that bad, but it's not like things are terrific between us.'

Michael Bashir walked in, the epitome of confidence. "Sorry to interrupt your work, but I need your advice about something."

Julian raised an eyebrow. "What's that?"

"How good is the medical status of Bajor?"

Julian glanced at him. 'Work related. Ahh.' "Well, it depends where you go. What exactly do you mean by status, though?"

"Facilities, staff, availability."

"Well, in the major cities, it's quite good. They have excellent facilities. Their staff is top notch, and it's all quite available for people who can reach it." Julian paused. "However, in the outlying areas, it still needs work. The facilities can be far and few between, which limits the availabilities, unless you're lucky enough to have a healer in your area. Staff in the outlying facilities is good, but are mostly trained in Bajoran healing methods. The staff in the cities have been exposed to other methods and whatnot." Julian paused. "Do you need anything more?"

His father paused, digesting the information that his son had given to him off the top of his head. "I think that will do for now. Star Fleet wants my opinion on whether or not they should send extra supplies out." He paused. "What would your recommendation be?"

Julian raised both his eyebrows. "My honest opinion as a doctor would be to have them send the supplies out. There's no such thing as too many supplies. Some supplies for building hospitals in the outlying areas would help too. Also there's the matter of the orphanages...." Julian stopped and shook his head. "Well, Admiral Necheyev and I have had this argument several times over."

Michael glanced at his son. "The admiral doesn't know what it's like here. You do. Perhaps it would help my decision if you could show me what you're talking about." He paused. "Star Fleet is leaning towards not sending the supplies, for the sole reason that Bajor needs to get back on its feet on its own. Kai Winn agrees. I know its not a good reason from your standpoint," he said, seeing Julian stiffen slightly, "but from a bureaucratic viewpoint, it makes sense."

Julian sighed. "Never tell Kira what you just told me. I'd be treating you for injuries rather than discussing this." His father grinned. "I'm supposed to make my usual run to the orphanages in two days. If you want, you can come along." His father nodded. Julian paused. "I'll warn you now, though. The conditions of the housing where we're going isn't the best. Regardless of what Star Fleet or Bajor would like to believe, Bajor still needs help."

"Julian, I appreciate the warning, but I've been on war-torn worlds before. I'll manage."

Julian flushed but bit his tongue. His father nodded and left. After a moment, Julian sighed and turned back to his paperwork.

*******

"Ambassador Bashir. What can I do for you?"

"Kai Winn, it's an honor to talk to you again. I was wondering if you could give me a hand with something."

"Yes?"

"Well, it seems I'm having difficulty accessing the medical data base for the capitol. When I contacted the administrator, he told me it was on your orders that access is restricted to Bajoran medics. I'm afraid I need the information in order to complete the report for the extra supplies that were asked for."

"I see. Well, I will have a copy of the records sent to you as soon as possible."

"Oh. I was hoping that I could look myself."

"I'm afraid that is impossible. It would be a breach of security."

"Security from what?"

"Ambassador, I don't have to tell you what a threat a changeling infiltration is."

"No, but who's to say that one of your medical staff hasn't been replaced. I can assure you I am who I am. And, what if someone needed to access the database in an emergency. Say Doctor Bashir, for instance. Such a block could result in a loss of life."

"We take security precautions. As for your assurance, I'm simply afraid it isn't enough. No offense intended, Ambassador. As for your son, he has enough knowledge about Bajoran physiology that he has no need for the database." Winn's tone was cool.

"None taken. Well, I'll be waiting for the records. I appreciate your assistance in this matter, Kai Winn." She nodded and signed off. He sighed. 'That is one difficult woman. And, if I'm not mistaken, there's no love loss between her and Julian. I wonder why....'

*******

Julian collapsed on the couch in his quarters. 'Peace and quiet,' he thought. Closing his eyes, he allowed himself to drift off...only to be woke up by the sound of the door chime. He groaned. "Come in."

"Hello doctor."

'Kira,' he thought. "Hello Major," he mumbled in response.

"Rough day at work? Is Jadzia here?"

"Yes and no...respectively."

"Oh," a pause. "Well let her know I stopped by."

"Of course," he mumbled just as the door opened again.

"Hello!"

'Jadzia,' he smiled slightly and mumbled a greeting.

"Oh, we're in a good mood. Hello Nerys. What can I do for you?"

"Well, I was wondering if you have any of that incense you let me borrow that one time."

"In the bedroom. Have a seat. I'll be right out with it."

Julian still lay on the couch, debating whether he was going to get any sleep or not. Deciding on the latter, he opened his eyes. Kira was sitting across from him, staring at him. "Is there something I can do for you?" he asked.

"No. I'm sorry if I woke you up."

"Oh, that's alright," he said, sitting up. "I wasn't asleep."

"Here it is. I hope it's enough." Dax came out of the bedroom, still in her uniform, but missing the jacket. She smiled at Julian, gently resting her hand on his shoulder.

"Oh, this is plenty thank you." Kira smiled and nodded at Julian and walked out.

Julian smiled up at Jadzia. "Hello," he said.

"Hi," she smiled in return. She bent and kissed him gently. "Bad day today?" she asked heading into the bedroom again.

"No. Just tiring, tedious, and boring," he replied, following her.

"Hmmm," she mumbled from the room. He walked in. She had slipped off the shirt that went under her uniform and was pulling on a blouse. He smiled and walked up behind her and slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her against him. "We'll we *are* in a good mood," she teased.

"Ha ha," he grumbled, releasing her. He walked over to the bed and sank down on it. "Even if I was, I'm too damn tired."

"Is that a hint?" she asked playfully, slipping into a pair of silk slacks.

Julian smiled slightly. "Maybe." She turned to face him, grinning until she saw his face.

"Love, what happened today?"

"What, oh nothing. It's just strange seeing Michael on a daily basis."

Dax studied him critically, walking over to him. "What did he want to talk to you about today?"

"Oh, something about a report to Star Fleet about a request for medical supplies."

Dax arched an eyebrow. "That's your job."

"Was. Obviously it's his now."

"Is that what's bothering you? The fact that he's taken over some of the more tedious part of your job? You hate paper work."

Julian glanced at her, mildly ashamed. "Well, I don't think it would bother me half as much if it were someone else." Dax opened her mouth to say something but he cut her off. "Don't say it Jadzia. It may seem ridiculous to you but you can't blame me, considering our history. The father that was never satisfied with his son's work suddenly is doing it for him."

Jadzia sat next to him. "Julian. If he's under orders from Star Fleet to do this, he does it, regardless of whether or not it was once your job. I'd say you should count your blessings. If you had to do that report, you'd have to talk to Winn about accessing the medical files on Bajor." The look that crossed Julian's face was enough to let her drop the subject. She knew he'd never forgive Winn for what she did, causing Bariel to choose a risky procedure in order for her to move forward in the ranks. Or at least she knew that's how he saw it. Bariel had bought peace for Bajor with his life and Winn reaped the benefits. Having to deal with Winn was torture for him.

Julian sighed. "I suppose. Let Michael deal with Winn." Julian grinned evilly. "Two of a kind," and he suddenly sobered. Even he couldn't put Michael in Winn's category. At least, not anymore.

"So. What's for dinner?" Julian glanced up at her and groaned. He had completely forgotten it was his turn. She smiled. "It's alright. I'll fix it. You relax."

Julian smiled lovingly at her. "Thank you."

She smiled and headed out of the bedroom. "I'll let you know when dinner's ready."

Julian lay back on the bed and closed his eyes.

Chapter 2

Two days later Julian, Jadzia, Kira, and Michael were on a runabout heading towards Bajor. Dax sat in the pilot's seat and Kira was next to her. Julian was in the cargo area, checking over the supplies. Michael sat up front, studying a PADD.

"Entering atmosphere," Dax announced. The runabout was jostled briefly and then settled down. They heard a yelp from the back and Julian came to the front, gently rubbing his temple.

"Let me know the next time you do that and then give me a moment to secure the cargo," he grumbled, smiling at her.

"Sorry," she laughed. "Are you alright?"

"Just fine."

Dax set the runabout down in what was once probably a village square. Julian glanced out and then headed towards the back as Kira and Dax began the lockdown. As the runabout doors opened, he saw children running towards them. He smiled and felt a presence behind him. He glanced over his shoulder at his father and stepped out.

Michael Bashir looked on as the children gathered around his son, chattering excitedly. Julian tried his best to say hello to all of them. Dax and Kira appeared behind the elder Bashir and began to unload the cargo just as some adults came from the orphanage. "How long has he been doing this?" he asked.

Dax paused. "A couple years," was her response. Julian was talking with the adults that had come out of the orphanage while holding a little girl's hand. Dax smiled at the sight. 'He had such a good heart. And he's wonderful with children.' Her smile deepened at the thought.

Soon the supplies were unloaded and were taken to the orphanage. Julian walked through, checking up on some old cases and running general physicals. Michael wandered through the hospital, occasionally taking note of the staff (or lack thereof). They seemed competent, but they were very shorthanded. There were many children here, too many for the meager staff. It was well stocked, but Michael had to wonder whether it would be if Julian didn't make these mercy runs. He walked by one of the cubicles and spotted Julian. He was playing a cat's cradle with the little girl that was there. She was grinning at him and was attempting to take the string off his nimble fingers. He smiled as she managed to do it and gently ruffled her hair and picked up his equipment. He turned to leave and she threw herself off the bed and hugged his leg. Julian set down the equipment and hugged her for a moment. Julian picked up his equipment and said, "Good luck and take care." He caught his father watching him and smiled slightly. "So, what do you think?"

"I think that Star Fleet is greatly misguided. Along with Winn."

Julian smile wryly. "Well, like you said, Star Fleet's not here. As for Winn, she's only out for her own gain, so she really could care less about a couple of orphans that don't fit into her political agenda."

Michael's curiosity was piqued again. "I talked with Winn the other day. She's quite, um, difficult to deal with. I take it you've had your dealings with her."

Julian frowned. "You could say that."

Michael felt that if he pressed the subject they'd end up fighting. However, he still wanted to know why his son harbored such anger towards this woman. 'She must have done something pretty extreme,' he thought. Changing the subject, he said, "Who was that little girl you were with?"

Julian's features lightened. "Her name's Pola Liana. Her parents were killed when Cardassia pulled out of Bajor. She was brought here by friends of the family."

"Why didn't they take her in? Why bring her here?"

Julian glanced at his father. "When Bajor was first liberated, people could only think of what was best for themselves. To think of what will happen to the neighbor child was too much. However, Liana is lucky. The family that brought her here has petitioned for her adoption. However, she got a nasty cold and they didn't want to move her while she was sick. She should be well enough by the end of the week, though." He smiled as he saw Dax approaching. "Hello."

"Hi. How's Liana?"

"Good. She should be ready to leave by the end of the week."

Dax smiled. "That's wonderful. Well, Kira and I are done restocking. Should we go?"

Julian nodded. "We still have a couple of stops yet. Are you ready?" he asked Michael. He simply nodded.

*******

Later that evening, Michael Bashir was finishing his report to Star Fleet. He was impressed with his son. With everything that had to be done here on the station, he still found time to run these trips to Bajor. Most officers wouldn't get so involved. They'd simply fill reports to Star Fleet for more help and equipment. Michael sighed. And there was still the matter of Winn.

*******

Jadzia rested her head against his shoulder. "You know, you're quite a hero with those kids. They practically adore you."

Julian smiled. "I'm just doing my job. They're great kids."

"Hmmm." Dax shifted to face him. "Julian, I know we really haven't talked much about starting a family but," she paused, shifting again trying to get comfortable.

"Jadzia, are you saying you want to have kids?"

Dax glanced up at him. "Is that out of the question?"

"No, of course not. I never said it was."

She looked at him expectantly. "What?"

"What what? I didn't say anything Dax." He sighed. "Are you saying you want to start trying? We've barely been married for three months."

Dax sighed. "Well, not right away, but soon."

Julian glanced at her, not quite sure what to say. "You're not coming on any trips to Bajor with me," he teased, trying to shift the subject slightly. "You always get like this."

"Like what?" she asked indignantly.

"Maternal," he replied.

She laughed. "Maybe I do. But you're avoiding the subject."

He gazed at her for a long moment. "Jadzia, you know I want to have a family. But it's a bit early. Give us at least three more months." She smiled and kissed him. He sighed after a moment. "I meant what I said. You're not coming along anymore. I can't put up with this. I'll cave in after a month." Dax grinned and curled up against him again.

********

"Julian? Are you busy?"

Julian looked up. His father was standing at the doorway of the lab. "No. Not at the moment. What can I do for you Michael?"

'Would it kill you to call me father?' he thought. "When is your next run to the orphanages?"

Julian glanced at him startled. "In a month. Why?"

"Star Fleet wants me to supervise the trips from now on and deem whether they're necessary or not."

"What?!?" Julian was out of his chair in a flash. "Why? This is *my* project! They have no jurisdiction in this matter! I was never ordered to take this up by them. They can't suddenly regulate what they never ordered done."

"That's the problem Julian. They never ordered it. They didn't even know anything about it. When they heard that their CMO was giving Star Fleet supplies to Bajoran orphans, they have a right to be concerned. They're trying to wean Bajor off Federation charity, Julian. You giving hand outs isn't helping."

"I'm doing my duty as a doctor. They can't order me to stop. Besides these people still need help. You saw what life is like there. How can you even consider stopping me from helping?" Julian was fuming, regardless of the fact that his father told the fleet about his mercy runs.

"I never said that I was going to stop you Julian. I simply said I was going to supervise them. How many supplies you're giving to them and whatnot."

"I'm sorry but that's simply out of the question. I won't have you tagging along. Besides, over half of the supplies that I take are donated from shop keepers on the Promenade."

"I'm not regulating their charity. I'm regulating the use of Star Fleet supplies."

"So why don't you harass O'Brien about it? He helps out as much as I do. I don't see you banging down his door."

"Julian..." his voice was threatening.

"No. This has nothing to do with Star Fleet. It has to do with you and me. I haven't seen you trying to do anyone else's job since you got here. Why are you taking over mine?"

"Star Fleet's orders...."

"Forget Star Fleet," Julian shouted. "You could refuse. You're not in the service. You don't trust me, do you? Don't think I can do the job?"

"That's ridiculous. If that were the case I would have told them long ago that..." his voice trailed off.

"Told *who* what?" Julian asked. Michael didn't respond. "TOLD WHO WHAT?!"

"Told Star Fleet Medical that you were too inexperienced for the job." Julian's jaw hit the floor. "Do you have any idea how many people want this job, Julian? People with a higher rank, wanting recognition. Medical can't support you forever, especially if you pull stuff like this. Star Fleet's getting antsy about this whole situation. A lot of people have asked to have you removed as CMO on the basis of your rank and lack of experience."

Julian stared at him for a long moment. "So they sent you here to spy on me? To see whether I should be removed from my post or not?"

"Julian you're overreacting," His father stared at him.

Julian glared at him. "I am *not* overreacting! Was the whole thing just an act? Something to get me to trust you? To see if I'm competent enough?"

"No! Of course not! Don't you trust me?"

"How can I? You've done nothing but lie to me from day one." Julian was still glaring at him. He drew up some data on a PADD and threw it at Michael. "There's the dates and times of the upcoming trips. Hope it helps." With that, he turned and left. Michael heard him ask, "Maile, can you take care of the physicals scheduled for the day?" She must have responded because he then said, "Good. Call me if there's an emergency. I'm taking the rest of the day off." Michael glanced down at the PADD in his hands and sighed.

*******

Julian stormed into Ops. Dax glanced up, shocked. He avoided her gaze. He would tell her what happened later. He strode over towards the office and walked in. Captain Sisko sat at his desk, studying something on the terminal screen. "So, is Star Fleet replacing me or not?"

Sisko glanced up, startled. "What?"

"I just had a talk with my father. He said that several more experienced officers are after my post and want me removed. And that Star Fleet's leaning towards doing it. Seeing as you're my commanding officer, you ought to know about this. In fact, you're either supporting me or Star Fleet."

"Doctor, if I was supporting Star Fleet, you wouldn't be here right now." Sisko was surprised that the doctor was this mad about what was happening. He should be used to bureaucrats by now.

Julian froze. "So it's true. Star Fleet would rather have a more experienced officer here."

"Doctor, Star Fleet wants the best doctor they have for this job at this post. Star Fleet Medical, myself and several other doctors agree that it's you." Julian relaxed marginally. "However, several doctors that are out to make a name for themselves or want to move up in the ranks who think they're the best person for the job. Right now, the odds are stacked in your favor."

"Then why is Star Fleet taking away some of my jobs and giving them to Michael? He already has taken over about 1/4 of the paperwork I used to do and now they're sending him with me on the runs to the orphanages to make sure I'm not wasting Star Fleet supplies."

Sisko sighed. "Doctor, I don't have to tell you how a bureaucrat's mind works."

Julian scowled. "No, sir, you don't have to. I lived with one for 18 years before having to get out. I really don't care for them."

Sisko frowned. He knew that Bashir and his father weren't the closest of people, but he didn't know exactly what happened. He didn't pry into his senior officer's personal lives unless it threatened station efficiency. "Doctor, are you comfortable with the situation?"

"No. I'm not. However, I won't let it interfere with my job...sir."

"Alright. Doctor, I sympathize with you're situation. If you need advice...."

"Thank you, sir." Julian had calmed down somewhat. "Just..keep me informed about what's happening."

"Of course doctor." Julian nodded and walked out.

Dax had been staring at the doors since Julian went in. She had never seen him so angry. She watched as he confronted Sisko about something and his emotions shift from betrayal, to shock, to resignation. He walked out of the doors and Dax practically leaped across Ops to his side. "What's wrong?" she demanded as another officer moved to take her place. She knew what she was doing was completely unprofessional, but she didn't care.

Julian sighed. "We'll talk later this evening."

"You're father's coming over this evening."

"What?!?" Julian's voice carried through Ops and even caused Sisko to look up from his work in his office. Dax took a step back from her husband, startled. "Since when?" he demanded, lowering his voice.

Dax glanced around Ops. People were staring at them, mildly shocked. During their shifts, they were usually consummate professionals. They were both acting quite out of character. She tugged him towards the turbolift just as Kira called Dax over. Dax glanced at her husband. "Stay here." She walked over to Kira. "What is it?"

"Dax, take the afternoon off."

"Why? This will just take a moment."

"Dax, Julian looks like his nerves are shot. He's been acting strange since his father came to the station and it's been getting worse lately."

"I'm his wife. Don't you think I haven't noticed?"

"Take the afternoon off and get him to relax. He's no good to us like this and neither are you because it's affecting you also. Now go. That's an order." Kira was firm.

Dax frowned at her and turned on her heel. She walked over to Julian and gently pulled on his arm. They walked into the turbolift and headed out of Ops.

Chapter 3

"Alright. What is wrong?" They were back in their quarters. Julian was pacing back and forth. Dax followed him with her eyes. He was wound up tighter than a spring.

"Why did you say he could come over tonight?"

"I didn't see any problem with it. The two of you seemed to be getting along."

Julian sank down next to her and rested his head in his hands. He told her about his confrontation with his father in the Infirmary and his discussion with Sisko. He sighed. "My career is falling out of my control, Jadzia. I can't take much more of it. I've worked too damn hard to get this far. I'm not going to let some bureaucratic idiot take it away from me. Especially that blackguard who claims to be my father." Julian stood up and began pacing again.

Dax sat silently for a long moment. She really didn't know what to say. After a moment, she said, "Julian, there's really nothing you can do. You're right. It's out of your control. You'll just have to grin and bear it until things cool off."

"Is that all the advice you have? Seven lifetimes of experience and all you can tell me is to tough it out?" Julian stared at her, betrayal apparent in his dark eyes.

"Yes!" she snapped, standing up. "That's all you can do. You'll just have to do your job and prove to Star Fleet that you deserve this post more than some egocentric, rank happy doctor." She lowered her voice and walked over to him and gently hugged him. "Oh, love. I know you want to go and do something about this. But you can't. Not the way you want." She felt his arms tighten around her. She sighed softly. "You know, why don't you get some sleep. You've been under a lot of stress lately," she pulled away and brushed his cheek with her hand and gently brushed his hair off his forehead. "Get some rest."

Julian smiled. "Healer, heal thyself?"

"Mm hmm. I'll go talk to Michael and tell him tonight's off."

Julian nodded and pulled her close. They kissed tenderly. "What would I do without you?" he asked, smiling slightly.

"You probably would have worked yourself to exhaustion years ago. Now, go to bed."

"Yes ma'am." He smiled and kissed her again. She pulled away and headed out the door. Julian sighed and walked towards the bedroom, determined to catch up on some sleep.

*******

Dax strode into the office of Michael Bashir. His back was to her. She was mildly outraged at what was happening to Julian. He hated to be out of control, especially where his career was concerned but to have his father be the one who was slowly taking away that control.... Dax stared at the ambassador until he turned to face her. "Dax! Is there something I can do for you?"

"Actually I'm here to tell you that dinner tonight is off."

"Ahh. I see you talked to Julian."

"Yes. He's still somewhat upset and I don't blame him," her voice carried her anger. "However, I'm too tired to argue with you about it so I'll leave." Dax turned to go.

"Dax.." She turned back. "Look, I have no choice in the matter. I'm just following orders. No, I may not be Star Fleet, but I do work for the Federation. So do you. Star Fleet felt it would be best to send someone not in Star Fleet to observe. That's me. If it's any consolation, I'm on Julian's side. He's a good doctor. He took this post when no one else would and now that he's turned into such a lucrative job, they want it. That's not going to happen. Not if I have any say about it."

Dax studied him and then nodded and left. In a couple minutes, she was back in her quarters. She walked into the bedroom. Julian was asleep. She smiled. He hadn't looked that calm in months. She shrugged out of her uniform jacket and stretched out next to him, too tired to change. He shifted slightly at her movement and his eyes fluttered open briefly. He smiled and pulled her close. Curling up next to him, she rested her head against his chest and let his heart lull her to sleep.

*******

The next day things were back to normal. Both of them had gotten caught up on their sleep and were in better moods. The following days proceeded smoothly. Then came the next trip to Bajor.

*******

Julian sighed. He didn't want to do this. He knew he had no choice in the matter, but he still didn't want to. He hadn't heard from Sisko about any decision from Star Fleet so he presumed that his father's recommendation would rest on this trip. Julian sighed again, impatiently this time. He's late. I should just leave without him.' Dax came out of the runabout and studied her husband. He was standing near the hatch, staring at the shuttlebay doors with mixture of apprehension and impatience. Just then, Michael walked in. "Finally," Julian muttered. "Are you ready?" he asked in a louder voice.

"Yes."

"Then let's go. We're late already." Julian stalked onto the runabout. Michael sighed and followed.

They contacted Ops and O'Brien gave them permission to leave, warning them that there had been a couple skirmishes near the orphanage. They acknowledged this and headed towards Bajor.

*******

Julian smiled as he stepped off the runabout. Most of the kids were inside, probably due to the fighting, but a couple had wandered out to greet them. He tried to pay attention to each of them in turn while telling Dax and Kira where to take the supplies. Michael had been given a list of everything that had been brought, so Julian didn't expect too much hassle from him so he could get to work. Ushering the kids inside, he glanced over his shoulder. Kira was securing the runabout and headed towards them. "All set," she said when she got to his side. He smiled his thanks and headed in and got down to work.

Three hours later, they were leaving to head towards the next orphanage. They were about 10 meters from the runabout, Kira in front, Julian and Jadzia walking behind her and Michael following at a discreet distance of about three meters, when an explosion rocked the ground beneath them.

"Down!" Kira cried and Julian and Jadzia dropped. Michael was still behind them. "We have to get out of here!" Kira shouted as another explosion sounded, closed this time. Dax and Julian just nodded. Kira shouted over to Michael, "Come on! Let's go!" He started for them when another explosion ripped through the area, throwing them back. Julian coughed and looked around. Kira and Dax were close by and looked alright but he didn't see Michael. "Shit," he cursed under his breath. "Michael!" he shouted. They needed to get out now but couldn't leave him here. Dax glanced up, looking around too. Another explosion rocked the ground, forcing them back again. When Julian recovered, he crawled over to Dax. "Get Kira and get into the runabout! I'm going to see where Michael is."

"NO! Julian, we have to get out of here now." Dax's sapphire eyes were wide.

"Love, we might not get along, but I just can't leave him here. Now go!" He gently pushed her towards Kira and headed back to where they last saw Michael.

"Julian!" she shouted at his back. He didn't look back. Dax gently shook Kira. "Come on." She stirred. "Kira, can you move?"

"Yes." She sat up. "Where's Bashir?"

"He went to find Michael." Dax glanced around. The shelling had stopped, but dust still hung in the air.

"Dammit!" She hit her badge. "Kira to Bashir."

There was a long pause and Kira was about to repeat the hail when they heard him say "Bashir here."

"Doctor, get back here. We have to leave now, before things get worse."

"Just let me find Michael. Get in the runabout and power it up. You can beam us in once I find him."

Kira looked at Dax. She was pale, but she said, "Let's go. Maybe we'll be able to find him ourselves." They sprinted towards the runabout.

*******

Julian looked around. It was difficult to see two feet in front of his face with all the dust. Understandably, he tripped over Michael before he saw him. Dropping down, he pulled out his tricorder and scanned him. Julian's face paled and he reached for the medkit and injected a hypo into him. Michael stirred slightly. "Come on." He glanced up and murmured, "Julian?"

"It's me. Don't worry. You're going to be fine." Julian glanced towards the runabout. He hit his badge. "Bashir to Kira. Two to transport."

"Afraid not, doctor. We've got a slight problem."

"What?" Michael groaned and Julian glanced down at his tricorder. "Whatever it is, Major, you'd better fix it fast. I don't have many of the supplies I need in my medkit and I need them *now*."

"Julian, we're not going anywhere fast. The runabout was damaged in the shelling. It'll take a little while. I want you back here..."

"Julian, what do you need and where are you?" Jadzia broke in. He rattled off a list of things and she said, "I'll be right there with them."

"Understood. Bashir out." He cut the connection and glanced down again. Michael was studying him. "I'm not doing well, am I?"

Julian didn't answer. He just glanced towards the runabout, waiting for Jadzia. "You'll be fine," he said after a moment. "Jadzia's on her way with the supplies I need and Kira'll have the runabout fixed and we'll get you back to the station. Just stay still." Michael coughed and closed his eyes. Julian studied the tricorder, growing more worried by the minute. He was bleeding internally and had second degree burns along his arms and face. "Don't worry," he murmured again. He hit his badge again. "Dax, where are you?"

"I'm on my way, Julian," she replied, just as his tricorder shrieked at him.

"Shit!" she heard him curse. "Dax, I need that stuff now!" Dax was sprinting as quickly as she could. Over the pounding in her ears she heard, "Don't you dare die on me. You're too stubborn to give up. It runs in the family, damn it!"

"Almost there, Julian," she gasped. She could almost see them through the clearing haze. She unbuckled the pack and shouted his name. His head snapped up briefly. Just then, an explosion filled the air followed immediately by a rumbling sound. Dax was thrown forward, the pack was ripped from her hands and was thrown farther than she. She hit the ground hard. She tried to pull herself up and couldn't. Broke my arm," she realized. The rumbling noise grew louder. "Julian!" she shouted. There was no response. "Julian!" she shouted again. She recognized the sound. Kira had once told her that there were many caves under the area here. The shelling must have caused the ground to cave in. They had to get out of here now or risk being buried alive or blown to bits. She scanned the area. She managed to catch sight of him about 5 meters away, the pack next to him. He was slumped unconscious next to his father. Struggling to get to her feet twisted my ankle...' she hit her comm badge with her good hand. "Dax to Kira."

"Kira here. What's going on?"

"The shelling has caused cave-ins. Is the runabout ready yet?"

"Almost got it....." There was a long pause. Dax began limping towards Julian, ignoring the searing pain in her ankle. She was about 10 feet from him when she heard Kira say. "I got it!"

"Transport Julian and Ambassador Bashir first," Dax was saying when she heard the rumbling grow louder. She felt the ground shift beneath her feet and she jumped back. She hit the ground with a jarring thud and glanced up to see Julian come to just as the earth swallowed him and his father up. "NO!" Dax cried. "Kira, transport Julian and his father now!"

"I can't get a lock on them. Where'd they go?"

"They got caught in cave in," Dax gasped, struggling to get to the lip of the pit. "Julian!" she cried down. Her voice echoed back at her mockingly.

"Hang on, Dax. I'm getting you out of there."

"No! I've got to find Julian," she said, just as she felt the familiar ripple of the transporter run through her. When she rematerialized, she was on the runabout. "Dammit Kira! I said no!"

"I out rank you. Besides, if they got caught in the cave in, they probably didn't survive." Kira saw Dax blanch at that and flushed with sympathy and at her insensitivity. "I'm sorry, Jadzia," she said quietly, "but it's probably hopeless to go out and look for them."

Dax stared at her, cradling her arm. No,' her minds screamed. He's not dead. He can't be.' Kira came over and gently guided her friend to a chair. "Look, we'll scan for a bit, looking for any life signs. If we don't find any, we have to leave and get back to the station. They'll send someone out here to..." Kira stopped as Dax began to sob. Kira gently hugged her friend. "It's okay. Let it out." Kira paused and said quietly, "Computer, scan for human life signs."

"Scan complete. No human life signs present within 100 meters." Kira gently gave her friend's shoulder a squeeze. "Maybe we'll pick something up from a low orbit." Kira hit the helm panel and lifted the runabout into a low orbit and began scanning.

Chapter 4

Julian's head hurt. He couldn't recall the last time he had a headache this bad. Shifting slightly, he realized where he was and remembered what happened. He opened his eyes. All he saw was night sky. Shivering, Julian looked for his father. The darkness made it almost impossible to see. I can't believe I survived that.'

Julian sat up and became aware of an intense pressure on his left leg. Fumbling in the darkness, he found that his leg was pinned under a large rock. Taking a deep breath, he shifted as best he could and tried to lift it. Rolling it would just crush his leg more. It didn't budge. Julian sighed and closed his eyes, resting. After a moment, he tried again. This time he was able to move it marginally.

After several tries, Julian had managed to free himself. He sighed again. A lot of good it does you. You can't walk you idiot and you certainly can't climb out of here.' He stretched his arms out to the side to see if he could find anything. His hand hit something hard. The pack Jadzia was bringing,' he realized. Suddenly he remembered why. "Michael?" he called softly, not wanting to trigger another cave in. No response. Something inside Julian broke. "God, no. He can't be dead," he whispered. Praying for traditional Star Fleet preparedness, Julian opened the field pack. He fumbled through it and found a flashlight. He switched it on and swung it around. At first, he didn't see anything out of the ordinary. He was pretty much on top of the pile of rubble but he was still at least 20 feet from the lip of the cave in. Shining it around and down, Julian saw something that made his heart stop. "Michael!" Grabbing the pack, he managed to drag himself down, ignoring the pain in his left leg. He got down there in about 5 minutes. He pulled out a tricorder and scanned him, his left hand searching for a pulse, just in case the equipment was damaged. He smiled slightly. Both methods confirmed that he was alive, barely. Julian began to work, praying that someone would find them soon.

Dax sat in Sisko's office, stunned. He came over and handed her a cup of tea. "Kira told me what happened," he began. He studied her. Her face was streaked with dirt and tears. She hadn't cleaned up since getting back to the station. She stared into her cup, not saying anything. "I'm so sorry, Dax. I don't know what else to say."

Dax looked up at him, her eyes dull. "What's going to happen? And don't patronize me Benjamin."

"I'm sending a team tomorrow to search for them and bring them back here. We'll deal with what happens after that when they're recovered." Sisko hated to tell her this but she deserved to know. "Dax...Jadzia, is there anything I can do?"

She glanced away. "No. All I want to do is go shower and get some sleep."

"Take tomorrow off."

"With all due respect, sir, I'd rather go down to Bajor tomorrow."

"I'm not sure that's such a good idea." She glared at him and he sighed. "Alright. If that's what you want." She nodded and walked out.

Kira looked up as Dax walked into Ops. "Dax?" She ignored her and stepped into the turbolift and headed out of Ops.

Dax walked through the habitat ring until she reached her quarters. She opened the door and walked in and collapsed on the couch, sobbing.

Julian sighed. He had no idea what time it was. He had been monitoring Michael's vitals for awhile though. He had done everything he could for him here. Right now, he was stable, but Julian had to get him to a medical facility soon. No later than 8 hours, he'd wager. Julian practically jumped as his father groaned and shifted. Julian's hands shot out and held him down. "Don't move."

Michael's eyes fluttered open. "Where...?"

"Apparently there are caves all under this area. The bombing must have caused a cave in. Don't move!" He sighed. "For once, take my advice."

Michael closed his eyes and sighed slightly. "They probably think we're both dead."

Julian shook his head. "I can't believe Jadzia would give up looking for us."

"Julian, if they were looking for us, they would have found us by now. Face it."

Julian frowned and checked the tricorder. "How do you feel?"

"Like I'm tanked up on tranquilizers." Julian smiled. Things were beginning to lighten up above them. Julian figured dawn was maybe a half hour away. He sighed. "Well, if your right about them thinking we're dead, they'll be here later to recover our bodies."

"Pleasant," his father mumbled. He leaned back. "If I'm not mistaken, if they don't get here soon, they won't be disappointed, at least in my case."

Julian frowned at him. "Don't be ridiculous. You're going to be fine."

"Julian," his father sighed. "Son, I know you better than that. I can tell when you're lying. Always could. Remember the time when you accidentally tracked mud all through the house in India?"

Julian smiled slightly. "How could I forget? I could have sworn you were going to kill me."

"I didn't though. Your excuse was too funny," he saw his son smile. " It wasn't me. A horrible little Venetian beamed in and ran around the house in muddy shoes and beamed out again before I could stop him.' " Michael chuckled and then winced in pain. "I couldn't help but laugh."

"I was six. How was I to know that there aren't any such things as Venetians?" Julian was smiling.

"Julian," Michael coughed and groaned at the movement. "Julian, what can I do or say to make you forgive me? I know I wasn't the best of parents but...."

"Michael, you verbally and mentally and occasionally physically abused me for 18 years and you just expect me to forgive you? I can't. I'm sorry."

Michael closed his eyes and sighed slightly. "I am," he whispered. Julian glanced at him startled. "For that and for this." Michael reached and took his son's hand. "Julian. I am sorry. I know you can't forgive me, but I want you to know that I wish things had been different." Julian met his gaze and nodded. Michael gave his hand a squeeze. "If it's any consolation, if I get out of this, I'm planning on telling Star Fleet that if they replace you, they're out of their minds and I'll resign my commission."

Julian glanced at him, startled. "What? No, don't do that. There's no point to it. If they decide that they want someone else for the job, I'll just have to adjust. I won't like it, but...." A warning light lit up on his tricorder and Michael gasped in pain. "Hold on." Julian reached and pulled out a hypo and injected some pain killers. His father suddenly grabbed his arm. "Julian," his voice was strained. "Julian, no matter what happens, I want you to know that," his eyes shut and he swallowed hard, "I'm *very* proud of you and I love you, son." Michael coughed and groaned at the movement.v Julian's felt his voice catch. "Michael, everything's alright. You're going to be fine. Don't worry." If I don't get him out of here soon, he's going to be right.'v Michael took a shaky breath. "Julian, you keep forgetting who you're talking to."

"So do you," Julian replied. "I'm not going to let you prove me wrong about this." His father smiled slightly.

"Approaching Bajor. Should I set us down near the orphanage?"

"Yes. About a kilometer from it," Kira replied. She glanced at Dax. She didn't look like she got any sleep last night. I still can't believe Sisko let her come.'

The runabout moved through the atmosphere and was soon over the sight. Dax looked down. Several craters scoured the ground, either from the blasts or the cave ins. She took a deep breath.

"Are you alright?"

Dax looked up. "I'm fine, Nerys. Let's go." They walked out with the recovery team.

*******

Julian closed his eyes and leaned back. His father was asleep and he was exhausted. I can't sleep,' he thought. I have to stay awake. Just in case.' Suddenly, Julian heard voices coming from above. He looked up. Thank god!' "Hello!" he called, praying that he didn't loosen anything up.

*******

"Where is it?" Kira asked.

"Over there," Dax replied, pointing.

They walked over. As they drew closer, Dax could have sworn she heard someone yelling. "Kira, do you hear...."

"HELLOO!!!"

Dax's jaw dropped and tears welled up. "JULIAN!" She sprinted over, ignoring the fact that she could fall in herself. She slowed as she reached the crater and dropped to her knees and looked down. It took her a moment before she saw him. He grinned up at her. She drew in a breath. He looked terrible but he was alive. "Oh, thank god," she gasped. Kira reached her and looked over. "Prophets," she gasped. "Hang on, Julian," she called "We'll be right there!" She motioned to the people that came with them. They began to trot over. She glanced back at Jadzia. She sat there, signing to him. "Can you tell him that help is on the way?"

"I already did. He said that you'd better hurry because his father is in bad shape." Dax looked at Kira, smiled, and turned back to him.

The recovery team came over and Kira started snapping orders.

*******

Within an hour, the team had reached the base. They started towards the doctor and his father when Dax darted past them and dropped next to Julian. She crushed him in a hug and practically devoured his mouth. He closed his eyes, too tired to protest. Until he heard them starting to try and move Michael. "Mmmph," he pulled away from Jadzia. "Wait! Don't move him like that." He felt her hands slide to his chest and he paused before telling them what to do. When he'd finished, she kissed him again. "Hmmm," he sighed, closing his eyes. She shifted to get a bit more comfortable when he jerked back with cry. "What? What's wrong?" His eyes were shut tight with pain. "Prophets! What happened?" she heard Kira cry. Dax whirled and followed Kira's gaze. "Oh my god! Julian!" Her hands flew to the medkit by his side. She pulled out a tricorder and ran it over his leg. "The bones are completely shattered. Julian, when was the last time you took any painkillers?"

"I..haven't. Couldn't. Had to make sure Michael..." he heard the hiss and felt the pressure of a hypo against his neck. "Had to make sure he survived. Couldn't let the painkillers put me to sleep, could I?" He felt a cool hand brush his hair back. He smiled slightly. He felt the haze of the painkillers setting in. He felt her lips press against his before he slipped into a blissfully painless sleep.

*******

"Morning, love." Julian smiled at her voice, not opening his eyes. "How are you feeling?"

"I've been better," he murmured in response, opening one eye. Jadzia was sitting on the corner of his bed, smiling slightly.

"Hmmm. You've looked better too."

"Thanks!" he replied, indignantly. She grinned and leaned forward and kissed him. He gently wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. She pulled back slightly and gently brushed the tip of his nose with hers. "Don't you *ever* do that to me again," she whispered. "I thought I'd lost you." A tear escaped from the corner of her eye and dropped onto his cheek. He gently brushed her cheek. "I'm sorry," he whispered. She nodded quietly and kissed him again. He felt her hands run down his chest and smiled slightly. "What?" she murmured and kissed him repeatedly while he tried to answer.

"Nothing." Kiss. "I just..." kiss "was think-..." kiss "-ing how nice..." kiss "it is..." kiss "to be back." She pulled back for a moment and smiled. She kissed him again, feeling him laugh silently as she did.

Michael Bashir watched the young couple, smiling slightly. He closed his eyes. He had sent in his report earlier, almost immediately after he regained consciousness. What a fight that had been,' he reflected. That is one tough nurse.' He prayed that Star Fleet listened. He heard soft laughter coming from the other side of the room and smiled wistfully. Then he heard light footsteps walk out of the room and heard Julian's voice. "Michael?"

He looked over at his son. "Yes Julian?"

Julian smiled slightly. "You alright?"

"Thanks to you." He sat up to get a better view of his son. He still looked quite tired and his leg was firmly bandaged. I suppose I don't look much better.'

Julian smiled at him and closed his eyes. "Nah. I had nothing to do with it. You're just too stubborn to let little things like bombs and a 20 foot fall to kill you." Michael chuckled.

"All right, you two. Either you get some sleep or I'll sedate the both of you." Maile was smiling.

"Yes ma'am," Michael smiled. Julian glanced at her and was about to ask what all had happened when she cut him off. "You too doctor." He smiled at her and nodded.

*******

Three days later, Julian walked into the briefing room for the first time since getting back. Well, limped actually. Dax looked up and smiled warmly. People greeted him and things got down to business. There was the usual update on the Dominion activity in the Gamma Quadrant and some Fleet business to take care of. Kira gave a report on what had happened all those days ago. They had caught the people responsible for the attack on the crew and they were presently being held in a maximum security prison pending trial. Sisko asked the doctor if he was planning on pressing charges, as a formality. Everyone would be shocked if he didn't. Julian simply nodded and gave Jadzia's hand a squeeze. The briefing broke up and Julian and Jadzia went to the Replimat for lunch and had a quiet meal there. Julian still wasn't on duty yet, so he planned on heading back to their quarters afterwards and reading. Dax smiled. "Mind if I join you?"

Julian gazed at her smiling. "Not at all but aren't you on duty?"

She smiled slightly. "I took the day off. As of about five minutes before you walked into the briefing room." Julian just stared and smiled at her. "I figured we could...discuss...what we were talking about the last time we came back from the orphanage." She smiled enigmatically. Julian just grinned. "You never give up, do you?" he asked. "Nope," she smiled. They stood up and headed towards the habitat ring.
