Now you must ask why
'chat' when you have 'e-mail'. Well let me
tell you that the chat on IRC is WAY not the
samething as on the emails! I wouldn't know
how to explain it but if you want to know
just come and join us!!! And for the ones who
aren't members come and see us on #JetC or on #JetCjr just
to know a bit more about JetC. I must warn
everyone before though, you may enter and
there's no one well just try to come back
later, you may see me there though as Nebula
but I may not be speaking that means that my
computer is open but I'm not there. Try again
later!
But now ONLINE! Chat from the Webpage!! but read the rules first please at rules Lets CHAT! (only for those who are on the full webpage!)

rules?
11) How do I send something
privately to someone else and not the whole

12) How do you do those action
things?
So, here now, are the answers...
1) What's IRC?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. There are
several different IRC
Networks, each composed of servers (see the
next question for a description of servers).
Some IRC networks are: the EfNet, DALNet and
the Undernet. We'll be dealing with the Undernet.
2a) What are
servers?
Servers are the things that you connect to to
get onto the IRC network of
your choice. Using your IRC program, you can
select different servers to
connect to.
2b) What servers should I
use?
The one that you JetCers should try to get on
is the Undernet server in
Dallas City. The server name is:
dallas.tx.us.undernet.org
(the port number is 6661)
All Undernet servers
have the undernet.org at the end of them, by
the way, so they're easily identifiable. Now,
dallas.tx.us.undernet.org tends to be VERY
popular as there's less lag to X (more on lag
and X in a moment). So a lot of people try to
get on it. There's a limit to how many people
that server can handle, so if you get an
error like (no more connection) when you try
to connect to dallas.tx.us.undernet.org (port
6661), I suggest you try a few times. And if
you have any other error then I suggest you
try another server!
The actual COMMAND to change servers is:
/server server.name.whatever.undernet.org
portnumber
So if you're trying to get to dallas, do:
/server dallas.tx.us.undernet.org 6661
2c) What's lag and how do I
avoid it?
Lag is the delay between what someone types
and when you see it. If the
delay is more than a couple of seconds, one
is said to be LAGGED. The
delays have been known to exceed more than 10
minutes if people are on really lagged
servers. For this reason, to AVOID lag, do
not use the
following servers:
lowell.ma.us.undernet.org
los-angeles.ca.us.undernet.org
saltlake.ut.us.undernet.org
vancouver.bc.ca.undernet.org
toronto.on.ca.undernet.org
montreal.qu.ca.undernet.org
washington.dc.us.undernet.org
2d) What is this ping thingy I
keep seeing on my screen?
Ping is a way for people to measure the lag.
Don't be surprised if you get
a bunch of ping things on your screen. You
can ping someone by typing /ping
nicknameofpersonyouwanttoping or the whole
channel by typing /ping #channelname. Pings
are generally measured in seconds.
3a) How do I get to IRC (what
program do I use?)?
First of all, I'd like to say that I've used
both an IBM and a Macintosh.
By far, the best IRC program for an IBM (or
compatible) is mIRC. You can
download it from http://www.northco.net/files
or from the official
homepage, http://www.mirc.co.uk.
IRCle is the best one for the Mac, IMHO, and
you can get that at http://www.xs4all.nl/~ircle/.
As well, you can get either program from www.tucows.com.
Look under either Win3.x, Win95 or Mac
(depending on your system) and select Text
Chat.
3b) How do I join the #JetC
channel?
THE RULES: A new rule has been created. JetCjr members (that are under 18) may not enter #JetC between 8pm EST and 6am EST due to seniors that wish to speak freely and potty mouth at this time. That's why it was decided that a #JetCjr channel was to be created! Juniors can come in #JetC outside that time... they are more then welcome!
JetC
Once connected to the server, type in /join
#JetC and you'll be thrown into the channel.
:)
JetCjr
Once connected to the server, type in /join
#JetCr and you'll be thrown into the channel.
:)
3c) How do I change my
nick?
/nick newnick
If I wanted to change my nick from Nebula to
Celia, I'd do:
/nick Celia
Be warned, there are THOUSANDS of people on
the Undernet at once. You may not get your
first choice of a nick as it might be
taken.
3d) How do I quit the damn
thing?
Just type in /quit
:)
4) Why is there a #JetC
Channel?
Katane and I registered the channel because
we were JetCers and we wanted to meet more.
Katane's the list mommy of JetC5 and I'm
JetC1234 and jr1. We wanted to meet all the
members of the JetC from all the email list.
IRC is a medium for all the Ponds to get
together and talk about J/C or anything else
you can think of.
5a) Who can join the
channel?
IMPORTANT!! READ THE RULES FO THAT
5b) Who is usually on the
channel? And when?
Well, there's always X (see below). Then
there's generally me Celia (Nebula) and most
of the time Katane.
Generally, we're on in the evenings
6) Who's this X
person?
X is our bot. That's short for robot. X was
given to us by the Undernet
Channel Service because we registered our
channel with them. X is the thing that
ensures our channel won't be overtaken by
non-JetCers. He recognizes the Channel
Operators (Ops) and ops them if they're not
opped. X is nice. X is good. X is our friend.
We are not to do anything bad to him. :)
7a) What's that @ in front of
some people's names? mIRC
Users
That means the person is an op.
7b) Why are some people's names
red? IRCle
Users
That means the person is an op.
8) What does an Op
do?
Basically, an Op maintains channel order.
Generally, Katane and I do most of the Op
stuff, but Ops can also change the topic and
stuff like that. They
can also kick a misbehaving person out of the
channel, and if it was bad
enough, can ban them from the channel,
thereby not letting them come back in. If
Katane or I are in the channel, we'll deal
with weirdos, but if we're
not, and you're an Op, it's up to you.
9) How can I become an
Op?
First, you have to prove to us that you're
familiar with IRC. Then, you
have to be around for awhile. We don't want
to make you an Op one day and then never see
you again. :) That's about it.
10) What are the channel
rules?
The only real rule is that there are no flame
wars on the channel (unless
it's friendly-like between friends). Play
nice, folks. Also, the channel is
closd to non-JetCers.
11) How do I send something
privately to someone else and not the whole
channel?
You can type in /msg nicknameofperson
message
If I wanted to tell Katane something, I could
do:
/msg Menoly Hey, this FAQ is getting really
long, isn't it? :)
12) How do you do those action
things?
You can type in /me and then your action.
Your nickname replaces the /me so note that
it's all said in the third person. A proper
action would be
phrased like this:
/me thinks that you should really come on IRC
now.
It would look like:
* Nebula thinks that you should really come
on IRC now..

criticisms, please write them to me at celiab@total.net.

I have
to thank Julie Martin, first because it was
her idea to create that kind of page(which
was created for the group BonC) and then I
must thank her for letting me use her page
and make some modification!
