GAMES OF THE FEW by Joelle Augustine (zine: Beyond Farpoint 5)

This takes place after the poker game in 'All Good Things'. Jean-Luc invites Beverly in for a nightcap. Eventually, the subject of Kes-Prytt arises.

Reviewed by : Janis - Quite well written and I guess, worth reading - but nothing to get excited about. 6

THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY by Janis Sherringham (internet : homepage)

A fortune teller's comments cause Picard to consider the probability that his feelings for Beverly are mutual, and he sets out to discover if that is so.

Reviewed by : Janis - A quick but enjoyable look at yet another possible way for Jean-Luc and Beverly to _finally_ get together. 7

GOIN' FISHIN' by Sandra G. (internet)

Set three months after 'Generations', this story sees Picard and Riker meet for a fishing trip, while awaiting their new ship. Talk turns to their former crewmates, particularly Deanna and Beverly and the captain admits to himself (and in part to Riker) a few home truths.

Reviewed by : Janis - Oh, I thought, upon seeing this: no Bev, therefore no P/C, just Picard and Riker talking: this could be somewhat dull. I was wrong. Their conversations are quite enlightening, and although it isn't necessary to read it first, this is a nice little prequel to 'Changes'. 7.50

GREAT MINDS by M.A. Boyd (internet)

Sequel to "Mind Of Her Own". Now lovers, Beverly and Jean-Luc are exploring their new relationship. But Picard's adversary is still out there.......

Reviewed by : Janis - Again, some wonderful scenes and it's equally well written. I really enjoyed it up until the last few pages. After all that had happened to them--- well I can't tell you how it does end, let me just say that although in a way the ending is clever, I personally didn't really like it. Even so, this still gets 8

HEALING by Terry S. Bowers (currently unavailable)

Troi, still suffering herself after the mind rape by Jev, asks Picard to look in on Beverly. Crusher tells him what Jev did. This leads to them both discussing Jack, the time they went to see his body, and what really happened when they went to the morgue.

Reviewed by : Janis - This story has just Picard and Crusher talking--- but it is a gripping read despite nothing happening. You feel, as the story ends, that they are now closer than ever before. Had it off gone on longer, I think it would have lost some of its power - so although it's quite short, in this case, less is more. 7.50

HIGHLAND FLING by D.J. Nicholson (zine: Idylls 15)

After events on Caldos, Beverly is too ashamed to face Jean-Luc and has taken to avoiding him. Troi tells her how tired and unwell he's looking. Beverly makes him go on vacation and he tells her she has to come too. They return to Caldos where Beverly begins to heal and they tentatively agree to become lovers when she is ready.

Reviewed by : Janis - Nicely written with some wonderful dialogue, but what spoils it slightly is we don't know why Beverly is now ready to change her mind. We think they are going on vacation as friends, only to learn otherwise in a not very convincing way. However, that aside, this is a good read. 7

HIGH NOON by Todd Parrish (zine: Beyond Farpoint 3)

Troi and Crusher gang up on Picard to make him relax after his ordeal with the Borg. He chooses to spend time on the holodeck; a beach setting. Troi stipulates Crusher has to be with him as he should not be alone.

Reviewed by : Janis - Not a great deal of plot, but a lovely, tender story - and a rarity; it's written by a man! Some great turn of phrases; I enjoyed it. I was tempted to award an extra half point as I didn't know the male gender could write such sweet, romantic stuff--- but that wouldn't be very PC of me, would it! 7.50 {Todd, if you should happen to read this, please e-mail me!}

IF THEY BE TWO by Paisley R. Mason (internet)

Returning from a conference, Crusher's shuttle crashes. An away team hunt for her in a vast cave filled with tunnels. Due to a storm, it seemed likely she would have taken shelter in there. They don't find her, but they do find phaser fire on the walls. Someone or something had been chasing her deeper into the tunnels, but why? Eventually, Picard, too beams down and soon becomes separated from the rest of his team.

Reviewed by : Janis - Although an adventure story, and a exciting one at that, this also has some touching moments and some extremely good exchanges between the captain and doctor. 7.75

ILLUSION by Allison Martens (internet)

Crusher is 'killed' in a shuttle explosion. Data manages to beam up her neural signature. The plan is to recreate her physical pattern. Until this can be done, Beverly 'lives' in a holodeck. A deceased body will be resequenced with Crusher's dna. However, as Beverly had not used the transporter for several months, there is no pattern to work with. She will have to have the appearance of the body she will inhabit. And she won't be the same; will have other traits as well as her own. Beverly decides she won't go through with it. She wants the holodeck program to be erased. Jean-Luc pleads, argues, is desperate to keep her. But Beverly is adamant.

Reviewed by : Janis - Deeply touching, with a lot more going on, too: the ethics of a body swop, Beverly's life as a hologram, Jean-Luc's inability to grasp that she is not real; cannot really feel his touch or hear his words. A bit too much in the ethical department for my liking. I felt it distracted from the P/C angle - but at the same time, I can see it did need to be there in some detail. Marvelously written, with some lovely P/C dialogue and uplifting moments as the story draws to its conclusion. Much as I hated the end, I agree with it totally. 9

IN-BETWEEN by Terry S. Bowers (internet)

This isn't a story as such, it's Beverly's reaction to discovering Picard has been turned into Locutus, and her feelings when first seeing him thus, and when he is back on the ship, as she wonders if the man he was is gone forever.

Reviewed by : Janis - Just the one page, but what a page! Beverly's emotions (practically brushed aside in the episode) are laid bare. Wonderful, frank, and affecting. 8.50

INCIDENTALLY YOURS by Allison Martens (internet)

Captured by a hostile race and sentenced to die, Picard and Crusher ask they be allowed to die as one, hoping the marriage ceremony will buy them time. It does, but once safely aboard the _Enterprise_, Data informs them their marriage well may be legal under federation law. With both of them hiding their true feelings, it looks as if their 'marriage' will be immediately dissolved - unless one or both confess what's in their heart.

Reviewed by : Janis - An excellent plot device. Very well written - by turn, exciting, amusing and romantic. Hugely enjoyable. 8

INDULGENCES by Sandra G. (internet)

A long review for a long story. Beverly shows Jean-Luc a recording of a 1990's tv show about a married couple who produce cookbooks together, and also like solving mysteries. She suggests they use a massive holodeck on a recreational planet (the ships holodeck can't cop) to portray the couple and attempt to solve the shows final mystery; as the actor had died during production, just ten minutes had been filmed. Feeding that info into the computer, Beverly had gotten a program made up. The final show had used a real life crime for its premise; the death of the top researcher on the Dixon Hill books, who had been found dead in her home. She had guested on the show portraying herself. Soon, little glitches start to worry them both--- then to their horror they realize their roles are now 'real'; they are trapped in the twentieth century, seemingly unable to ever return to their own time!

Reviewed by : Janis - So many things happen, it is pretty complex at times, but so well written that it's easy to keep track of it all. In fact, much, much more happens than I've let on. As the tale progresses, so do new situations. It's more of a sci-fi thriller/mystery than a P/C story--- but there are several P/C moments to treasure, even if a lot of them are subtle. After giving a mark of ten once already, I never thought I'd be doing so again, but this deserves a ten +. The thought that has gone into this and the actual story writing itself is nothing short of phenomenal! 10

INTO THE FOLD by Jo-ann Lassiter (zine: Idylls 13)

Beverly tries to comfort and keep Jean-Luc occupied after his split with Nella Daren, and ends up being accused of smothering him. In the heat of the moment, the captain reveals rather more of his feelings for his CMO than intended.

Reviewed by : Janis - Not much plot, but very nicely written with some good dialogue exchanges. 7

IS JACK BACK? BY Janis Sherringham (zine: accepted by Naked Now but as yet unpublished)

Beverly Crusher begins to receive messages, notes and gifts from her late husband, Jack Crusher. Then Crusher returns to her, claiming he wasn't supposed to die and has been returned to life. His purpose in coming back is to resume his life with her, and see that his murderer is brought to justice--Jean-Luc Picard.

Reviewed by : Terry - This fast moving story keeps you wondering and on the edge right until the conclusion, and includes a very touching ending. 8

IT'S ONLY MAKE BELIEVE by Janis Sherringham (internet part 1, part 2, part 3 : homepage)

Picard is asked to negotiate the possible entrance into the UFP of a planet which sets high store in the married state, so he asks Beverly to pose as his soon-to-be wife. But when the officials learn they have been deceived, it leads to Jean-Luc's and Beverly's admission of their true feelings.

Reviewed by : Terry - A well done story which explores Jean-Luc and Beverly's reluctance to admit their mutual feelings and their fears at beginning a relationship. There is a good bit of honesty and a bit of romance in addition to the tension and humour. 8
